I still love the DC 8 series Aircrafts. In the early 70's I flew most of them at Seaboard World Airlines as a Loadmaster and Dispatcher mostly to off line stations.Preparing the weight & balance and flight plans was fun and took a lot of responsibility. These A/C where second to none , it is sad to see them gone.

Hi... Did the DC-8 have a short-field takeoff capability? I could have sworn I witnessed that, in a video of it I had watched. And it really impressed me. Please tell me what the plane is capable of, and what makes it better than the Boeing 707. Please answer in as much detail, as possible. Thanks

Something spectacular I’ve seen Stretched-8s do usually happened on a hot summer’s night after twilight begins. A heavily laden departure will occasionally over-rotate resulting in a tail strike producing a brilliant shower of sparks as the stainless steel strip beneath the empennage rubs the runway surface at speeds approaching liftoff. Sometimes a crew would tell us prior to taking the runway. Sometimes not. The sparks were brief, continuing until airborne.

Those were the days. The days you could actually tell one aircraft from a another. Now, look, another two engine airliner. Just bigger or smaller

All twin-engine airliners are NOT the same - Boeing's designers put that to rest, especially with the wide-body 777 and 787 Dreamliner.

I'm only 37 years old, but I frequently "reminisce" about the good old days and how it might have been. Especially the 60's and 70's. Thank you so very much for all your videos and bringing this to me!!

A DC-8 was an rejoiced from the DC-9. The DC-9's tail was removed. And mend the DC-9's cockpit

I traveled to Luxembourg from Nassau Bahamas on Loftliedir-Icelandic / Air Bahama Super63CFs (former Seaboard) a couple of times as a kid and fell in love with the aircraft . It sparked a lifetime of aviation for me .

My very first airplane flight was on an Air Canada DC-8-61, from Montreal to Toronto, then onto Calgary. This was in Summer of '72.

My dad worked for Air Canada and i flew on the Stretched 8's often . It is my favourite air craft , and for my money it's the most attractive .

The "Super 60" was the first DC-8 that both TCA and CPA used that was powered by Pratt & Whitney JT3D turbofans, as the DC-8-40, which both airlines also used, was powered by Rolls-Royce Conways.

Almost. Air Canada (formerly TCA) operated DC-8-54CF Jet Traders as early as 1963. These had P&W engines. Rolls Royce Conways were only mounted on the -40 series. TCA's first fatal jetliner crash (1963) involved one of these, btw.

If i didn't know better , I'd say GRL is an ex TCA / Air Canada staffer ?

@Southpacific67, the "Super 70" was powered by CFM56 engines. Was the -73 considered faster with the new engines compared to the -63 with the old JT3D-3s?

The short 8's looked much better than the stretch models.

+Brian Gillespie I agree. I think the short versions of all airliners looked a lot better. Like the original short B-727's, etc...

The -62 had only a minor stretch compared to the -61 and -63.

Wow that ridiculous music. 1967 is actually a very late use of that music, but at that time it still would have fit right in to the stodgy engineers in that crowd (with their slide rules)
