Join FactsVerse as we take a closer look at the rumors and accusations that have been directed towards actress Joan Crawford since her death in 1977. We'll be focusing on what her first husband, Douglas Fairbanks Jr had to say about his late ex-wife before his death in 2000.
The relationship of Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Joan Crawford was prime fodder for the tabloid publications of the late 20s and early 30s. Douglas Jr was Tinseltown royalty. His father was the famed and beloved actor Douglas Fairbanks and his stepmother was the late-great Mary Pickford. While Jr was known as the Prince of Hollywood and followed in his parent's footsteps by also becoming an actor, it was his wife, Crawford that would ultimately become the huge movie star of the two.
Crawford made her big break in the 1928 film Our Dancing Daughters. A year later she fell in love with, Douglas Fairbanks Jr on the set of the sequel to Our Dacing Daughters, Our Modern Maidens.
The romance between Crawford and Fairbanks Jr seemed to be a match made in heaven, but as the years have gone by, we've learned a lot of juicy and shocking details about the two stars relationship that has cast it an entirely light. But more interesting than that is what we've learned about Joan Crawford. Numerous accusations, rumors, and revelations have come to light in the decades since her passing in 1977 that depict her as something more like a monster than a loving mother or cherished film star.
After divorcing Fairbanks Jr in 1923, Crawford went on to marry three more times. Three of her four marriages ended in divorce. In total, she would adopt five children, one of whom however would later be reclaimed by his birth mother a year after being adopted. Crawford's relationship with her children was one of the biggest reasons why the public lost faith in her. She disinherited her two eldest children, and after her death, Crawford's daughter published a revealing tell-all memoir titled Mommie Dearest that painted the late star as a raging alcoholic who routinely subjected her children to egregious abuses.

After divorcing Fairbanks Jr in 1923? Sloppy work here. She married him in 1929, divorcing him in 1933. She wasn't even in Hollywood in '23. And as far as Christina's claims: Hogwash!

The year Joan split from Fairbanks was not 1923, but 1933. And the trouble with her children started earlier than 1968. It was well known publicly that Joan and Christina had problems long before that. In 1960, Christina did a Ladies Home Journal interview about it and also spoke on the radio about it.The radio interview is here on KZbin.

Joan left Christina out of the will because she was made aware of the Book Mommie Dearest that Christina had written but not yet published. Christina also gave an interview where she talks about how much Joan had done for her, including paying for college and getting her jobs, but Christina just wanted her mom's fame, her money, her career.... without putting in the work for it. People have revealed things about Christina that are not flattering... she intentionally did things to put her mom in a bad spot. Joan and Al Steele gave Christina a car, but every day Christina would park it across the street facing the wrong direction. Joan and Al got tired of paying the parking tickets and getting out of impound, so they eventually took the car from her. Christina dropped out of college because she just wanted to be an actress, Joan was not pleased so she told her to pay her own bills but eventually got Christina a job in the largest talent agency. Christina quit that job because she wanted to act. Joan got Christina a few jobs. Christina was in a play and had an affair with the director. She was so terrible, didn't know her lines, showed up late, and when they fired her the entire cast was thrilled she was gone. She is a monster.

The play was _Barefoot in the Park_ in which Christina blatantly refused to follow direction. She, also, was argumentive beligirent, unprofessional, downright nasty and constantly disregarded her "spot" (X) on the stage, thereby throwing all the other actors off during showings. She was such a pill and so poisonous during production that the cast all refused to ever work with her again. She reminds me of the type of woman who doesn't shower between men.

Monster is a harsh word. I've seen a couple of television show clips of a few of her acting appearances in the very early seventies. She was a hot blonde and seemed to really be a natural. The clips were overdubbed with Christina interviews about her abusive mother because it was a satirical trailer for a new film about Joan and Christina. I wonder why she just walked away from her inherited gift of dramatic acting? As the author of "MOMMIE DEAREST" she became a bestseling author which is ultimately what made her s star in her own right. When she did a *DONAHUE " interview she was asked if she was going to play herself in the upcoming film adaptation that was in preproduction. Her flattered but embarrassed response "oh no" made it truly seem like she had no confidence in acting and could not conceive of being in a film.

Christina was rebellious and mentally unstable while Joan was a strict disciplinarian who refused to let her go wild. Christina made up most of the claims and exaggerated others in order to get revenge on Joan and, of course, to sell books. Joan's other children, Cathy and Cindy, refuted the abuse claims.

Joan probably had the clothes dry cleaned and when returned they were on wire hangers, it must have been the childrens chore to remove them from the wire hangers and hang them with wooden ones, that was probably her outrage when seeing one in the closet 💁🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

Wire hangers are temporary. They leave creases in expensive clothing. As the daughter of a laundress, Joan knew this and also had handmade hangers made by her mother for the children's clothing. She told her children to put their clothing away. They didn't. She woke them up and made them clean their room and put the clothing away Whether or not she used physical punishment....it was not a random attack

Strange that the book was published after Joan had died and was therefore unable to defend herself. I must admit that I have read the book and was amazed how Christina remembered every bad deed of her mother right down to the tiniest detail. Either she kept a diary in which she recorded everything that happened or she was just exaggerating.

Douglas Fairbanks had split with Joan by that time so how would he have a clue on what type of mother she was?? With her first 2 kids she was abusing alcohol and probably pills very heavily. The younger adopted kids got the sober, older, more mellow version of Joan so yes…their childhood accounts could be very different from each other.

Cathy & Cynthia have both since 1978 cried foul and called Christina and out and out liar. The book was written in spite because Christina was left out of the will. These girls were THERE when a lot Christina's claims happened and both have said the situations were blown way out of proportion. Or an out and out lie that NEVER happened. Joan's grandchildren by Cathy and Cynthia have said. Their auntie Christina has never seen them. No Christmas cards, no birthday cards they have never seen nor met Christina ever. Cathy and Cynthia have not seen Christina in decades. In 1978 Cathy and Cynthia were finally interviewed by the Philadelphia daily News where in the end the only thing they had to say was "Chirstina, dearest. We don't remember mommy ever being a monster. Do tell who you are talking about in your book?" BOTH girls have said for years. The book was such a sensation and phenomenon that nobody wanted to hear what the other 2 girls had to say. 40 years later it has been proven that many of the old stars who rallied around Christina were on Christina's payroll.. cheques leave a paper trail . Child psychiatrists who have interviewed Christina doubt any of it ever happened. She changed her stories too many times.. abused children look for closure and move on. Christina is bilking this for ever cent she can get..

Christina was confrontational and drove her mother to her wits end and Joan would lash out. Christopher was diagnosed with some sort of mental disorder I do believe and Joan struggled to deal with it. If you take a balanced view those kids should not have been with Joan but they drove her nuts. Joan had a terrible terrible time as kid and resented the privilege she gave them . The other kids were apparently more docile and could handle Crawford's disciplinarian manner. Miss Crawford should not have adopted them she did her best but failed badly as a Mother to those two!

JC seems to come across on stage and screen and through her own autobio as congruently and consistently believable; the accusations by her daughter just do not seem to add up or be credible, they don't make sense; she certainly was gifted across a spectrum of genres in real life; five adopted children on top of three miscarriages; i would say on the face of the facts presented she had a strong and healthy motherly instinct, was one determined lady, bright, beautiful, athletic, talented; quite possibly she was such a delightful human being certain lesser mortals just couldn't stomach the fact that she had a beautiful heart that radiated so bright. that's what i see and hear come through JC

Christina was sullen, nasty, argumentive, beligirent, narcissistic, hateful, selfish, arrogant, manipulative, selfish, messy, immature, violent, moody, compulsive liar, dishonest, very ugly and angry. One story that sticks in my mind is how Joan would send her to boarding school, after a home visit, with innumerable, beautiful new clothes filing Christina's luggage. By the time Christina arrived by chauffeur at Chadwick's, there would be nothing left but a couple of shabby, beat up and dirty dresses. Where had she dumped the others? Christina would tell the headmistress that these beat up dresses were all her mother would allow her to have... When questioned profusely by Joan, Christina would nonchalantly shrug and say that she'd given all her clothing away to other girls who had "admired" it. What girls?? Christina was very vague regarding to whom she'd given her clothes... See the pattern???

One public Joan Crawford incident that was documented was her behavior at a White House luncheon. Joan was seated next to one of the young Senators' wives, and began publicly scolding and chastising the young woman (in a loud, vitriolic diatribe) for allegedly using the wrong silverware. Needless to say, the others at the luncheon were shocked, and Joan was never invited back to the White House again! If that's how she'd behave toward a perfect stranger, is it really all that incredible that she'd be abusive to her own (albeit adopted) daughter?

I think you're way off in your recollection. It had to do with Joan correcting the young woman about the correctness of a dessert or finger bowl and a doily that should be underneath. It was probably overblown by the press. Joan related to reporter Shirley Eder that she didn't get up from the table ("for ch----sake"). But let's talk about this young 23 year old woman just recently married to an old 67 year old male politician (this his second to a young woman). Talk disgusting and apparently there was naturally criticism at the time. Joan’s twin daughters Cathy and Cindy were only a few years younger then this politician's new wife so perhaps something in Joan spilled over.

You called the “Mommie Dearest “ movie “satirical “. I’ve also seen it called “camp”. I see no evidence of either claim in that movie. Crawford’s contemporaries in Hollywood were well aware of her behavior. People who make fun of the movie probably never met a truly psychotic individual.
@kristopherwilhite

The movie was not intended to be satirical at all. It was so over the top and poorly written as well as fictionalized that audiences found it to be funny but that was never intentional. Once this response by audiences occurred the production company began advertising the film as though it was satirical but it was intended to be serious and dramatic.

According to James MacArthur, the original Danno from Hawaii 5-O, he spent the night with Christina and Christopher and saw first hand the "sleep-safe" device they were strapped to on their beds. Even Christina herself contradicted her own by under a sworn deposition she provided when she contested her mothers will. And for 50 years Christina has been making money off her bizarre sad victim narrative. Several books on it and a movie. Oh please. She’s 83 year old and is still at it. It’s sad.
