We have a bit of a delay in getting the new episodes, that to be expected. It is just the by-line of the story and the portrayal of the characters are spot on for their duties in a small, rural community. And the cinematography of exterior shots is beyond beautiful. I love to hear the flow of the words, it takes me back to my childhood and listening to the old folks. My great grand Nan still had enough Gallic that it would be in her speech whilst talking to my Nan and her older brothers.

I am still not sure, Dougie if you are into classics but if you listen to the third movement of the Cotswold Symphony on ClassicFM sometime, especially if you are driving[don't put your foot too hard on the accelerator ] but it is stirring & invigorating, it is the Scherzo: Presto. He really was very prolific. Another good one, a different composer this time, Borodin's In the Steps of Central Asia, also that one I mentioned, there are one or two areas that sound like a piece of Ravel, Mother Goose. I heard the Vitislav on the radio this morning that bears some resemblance but if one thinks about it, there isn't a great deal of room to manovre with eight beats/notes to a bar. Invariably a composer can inadvertently or otherwise perhaps, pinch a piece from somewhere else which leaves one thinking 'where have I heard this one before?' Think of Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto then think again with the composer of The Warsaw Concerto. I once heard one commentator on a music program, years ago, saying, where have you heard that one before?

Funny what Douglas says about shopping/messages. It's exactly the same in Dutch. If you go to the supermarkt, you're buying 'boodschappen'. But 'boodschappen' also means 'messages' in the English/not-Glaswegian-slang.
@annemoefaauo70552 жыл бұрын
It was commonly used here in New Zealand too. Im guessing this wd be linked to the fact that a lot of Kiwis have Scottish ancestry and our city Dunedin was founded by Scottish immigrants. Love the show 'Shetland' and all the characters.
@stewarthill94293 жыл бұрын
Actually, 'reeking' literally means 'smoking' in Scots, as in 'Lang may yer lum reek' - 'Long may your chimney smoke' (Good Health!). From there it came to mean a bad smell, and from there; to be drunk. Makes sense if you think about it!. Edinburgh used to be called 'Auld Reekie' (Old Smokie), because there was so much smoke pollution back in the day.

Well talking of Reekin, the one I am thinking of is the Wrekin in Shropshire when someone asks you if they have been waiting for you for sometime, 'where on earth have you been, have you been around the Wrekin or if someone is dodging in telling the truth about something they shouldn't have done, someone might say, 'come on, stop going around the Wrekin.

Well I know some of those you mentioned, Dougie, e.g Piece meaning sandwich as I spent quite a lot of time off & on in Scotland when my father who was in the RN, was sent up to Lossiemouth, probably more times than you have had a hot dinner. Skunnard, that's a good one for fed up and Winch, there is someone in the main street of Monks Eleigh who does that, rather pleasant actually. Very useful. Also know about those Midges as well, the best deterrent for those little buggers is insect repellent but if you don't want to lose your friends if they stand close to you, then perhaps a lighted cigarette keeps the little pesky creatures away from you. The odour from the former can be a little off putting.

We use a few of the words in Northumberland - scunnered and also messages for shopping to name a couple. Also the Northumbrian midgies are terrible too, especially in Kielder forest.
