Hi Doug. Writing from the most easterly part of Canada. Newfoundland. Been following you for over 4 years now and have learned so much. Started carving in hospital while being treated for cancer. One of the perks of being a professional fire. Started carving using using a folding utility knife from Canadian Tire. Have bought more of the type you use and find them excellent. Learned your stropping methods and an still waiting for the right side of my left index finger to regain feeling. Lol. My cancer has returned again so I’m heading back for more treatment. As I found the last time I was in hospital carving got me by and it also entertained the nurses. Can you do a tutorial using the female goame

Good Saturday Doug! Those 6" female Gnome looks very nice. I watched the documentary of the Gnome People who were only 3" tall. They discovered in the cave of Florence Island near Indonesia. First they thought the skeleton remaining were children. But, the testing prove that these were fully grown Gnome people who lived on the island long time ago. The villagers who live there have a lot of the Gnome Myth Stories still about them coming out at night wondering around their village.

Doug, I don't know if you read new comments on your older videos or not however... This video has me grinning ear to ear this morning. So fun. My wife's hair stylist, and my barber, asked me to do a gnome carving as a gift for her mother. I carved your 6 inch gnome fellow yesterday, and then found the female gnome. BRILLIANT. I will give her both. 😊 Doug, I am 70 and started carving by following you in 2019. I love your stuff. Thank you for introducing me to a wonderful hobby in my retirement year. I have been a carpenter, woodworker and even boatbuilder most of my life but never thought I would be-able to create such fun and creative work to give to my family and friends. I refuse payment for carvings (although often been offered money and suggested I sell them for profit ) I prefer and love gifting the carvings I think worthy. Thanks Doug. You always bring a big smile.

Thanks for another fantastic video. I've learned so much and I love your method and the steps you take, explaining it all. On this one, the mouth was my undoing. I had the entire thing done, and I was really liking how it turned out. And then the mouth.... ugh. I know you say that you're using regular basswood, but your stuff looks like ivory soap compared to what I have. I know it's 90% your skill but I'm always amazed how clean your carvings look. I think the blocks I have (bought off ebay) work well overall, but when I got to the mouth it was very crumbly and chippy. And my knives are honed, stropped, and scalpel sharp. It was very frustrating to have it 95% done and not stick the landing. Will try again!

@@gpmscosta I'd love to help but the wood I sell is air-dried. I believe Portugal, like other countries requires a certification of kiln dried wood.
@gpmscosta
@gpmscosta 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnhein5089 Good sir, could you explain the difference?
@johnhein5089
@johnhein5089 3 жыл бұрын
@@gpmscosta When wood is air-dried it is harvested in the late Fall or Winter when the moisture in the tree is at its lowest. It then cut into slabs in the Spring, put into a barn and dry for about 2 years. It is then cut into smaller pieces. The moisture content of the wood is about 10-11%. Wood to be kiln (oven) dried is harvested at any time during the year, cut in to dimensions and heated in an oven to remove (boil) the moisture. While this process kill insects and allows finished wood to be produced on demand it also makes the wood harder. It will typically have 5-6% moisture content. A Forrester selecting wood for carving will be careful to select straight trees and avoid sections immediately below large branches whose weigh causes the wood to compress. Compressed wood is denser, heavier, and much harder to carve.
