Great video, but you should've really shown at the end just a quick few seconds of you stropping, just so we know what it looks like in real time.

ery grateful on this video. Don't know anything about it. do i need to put anything on a strop before doing this like some kind of polishing compound or wax?
@tbrew82222 жыл бұрын
Yes. No... Its up to your preference, and what condition your edge is in.. Compounds are not exactly a must, and some do without. However, polishing compounds of the appropriate grits make things go much much quicker. If ypu have multiple compounds (some of my hanging strops are 4 stage, and some I leave the last, as bare) then be sure that you are working coarser to finer. I usually only use the last two stages, but sometimes I go back to a coarser to save myself from going back to a stone. the coarser two, I use for occasional maintenance (not the daily routine), or working back to a sub micron grit after using a stone.

I wonder is ' to strop ' an irregular verb, and if so, what is its past tense and past participle? I mean, you can't strop if you can't use the verb properly, right!?

Good video but my straightrazor dont get sharp enough to cut hair So i need to go to the sharpstone ?
@tbrew82222 жыл бұрын
Maybe. Compounds make a big difference too! many generics do not list the grit size, and may be too rough a grit, dulling the blade. also, not enough tension in the strop can round the edge. If it is not the above, you may need to take it back to a stone. and then repeat the stropping from the coarsest to finest. If i strop every time I shave, I often only need the finest to restore it. after a while you get a feel for what phase of edge work it needs.

I just bought a straight razor, and the strop that I received has the leather smooth and under has a rough side, then the "cloth" type. What is the course side used for?
@rxw55207 күн бұрын
Depends on your strop, but the regular inexpensive cowhide strops often have an uneven surface on the coarse (suede) side, so in that case I’d avoid using an uneven surface. If the suede side surface has a smooth and even nap, you’re welcome to use it as your main strop or before progressing to the smooth side. Coarser surfaces, in honing and stropping both, generally just means you’re moving metal faster but the edge may theoretically not be quite as fine. For this reason you’ll often see the smoothest side is used last before shaving, but again it’s not a rule. Some people prefer the slightly softer edge off suede for their skin. The linen strop is 100% optional, opinions on it vary wildly. Some people just use it bare, some put all sorts of paste on there, some don’t use it at all. It’s personal preference. Personally i keep it simple and just use the smooth leather before shaving of sometimes halfway through shaving if you have a coarse beard (which most of us do). If I need a touch up beyond that I’ll use a finishing stone or a few minutes on an 8k then a finishing stone. As always, there are no absolute rules when it comes to “which strop” or “which side”. As long as you’re working with an even surface, it’s personal preference bc it’s your skin and as you experiment only you will know what you like best.

You don't need a strop. Just use your jean covered legs. The canvas/ cotton is enough to realign the steel feathers, and it's elastic enought to conform to the blade edge.

A Gold dollar or something similar is supposed to just get your feet wet and I did just exactly that. I also got a cheap beginner strop to practice on and I quickly wanted a better razor. So my KZbinr pal Anthony Esposito recommend I get a Theirs-Issard and boy did I love it as soon as I saw it! I also purchased a more higher quality strop. I just purchased a Herman Oak English Leather Bridle Leather 3”. I’m not even going to touch it for awhile till I know my technique has improved. Because within two minutes of stroping my Gold Dollar I already nicked my strop lol. (Very slightly and not deep at all, it’s still flat. But yeah what I’m doing is a very good idea lol and I’m getting better It’s a great idea first learning with a DE or Shavette. I’ve been traditional Wetshaving for over three years and definitely learned the importance of proper pressure and angle. I also have been using a Shavette and Kamasori style Shavette for years on and off so I think that’s why I did so well my first straight razor shave. I’m still no Zen Master with the cut-throat yet but I definitely will be!!! 💪🏻😁 💈😁👍🏻💈 ~Mike Rose 🌹

Hiya James. A cracking video as always. Can you shave a beard off without having to shorten the hair beforehand? I don’t mean a beard as long as the fine specimen you’re sporting, but not stubble either. Say a couple of weeks growth, for example. PS, I’m still trying to convince my better half that this is a good idea. I’m hoping she’ll see sense in the end & allow one in the house. Any positives you can give her would be greatly appreciated. Something reassuring about the safety aspects & calming her over the dangers. Thank you in advance.
