in 1590 it would have taken a lot of guts to play the lute!

Beautiful music that's aged amazingly If Sting has added it to his repertoire. Many thanks for posting a vid without ads! .

I love the simplicity, tranquility, and naturalness of the music. Later classical music is too orderly, complex and extravagant for me.

The oud and the lute went their separate ways at the end of the Middle Ages. Until the 1400s the European lute was played with a plectrum similar to the oud players risha, and often, like the oud, it had no frets. Over the course of a century the lute became a fretted instrument and by 1500 the plectrum was gone and the strings were being plucked with the right-hand fingers. The lute's delicate polyphonic music is so different from the spirited monody of the oud, it hardly makes sense to compare them. Two wonderful instruments for two brilliant musical traditions!

Most of John Dowland's work was renaissance, not Baroque. People need to do their research before posting.
