A “Shower” and a “Grower” walk in to a bar… and we get GREAT CONTENT. Excellent video. Stripped down and truthful. Educational from two points of view: 1. Dedicated to spending every waking minute babysitting the tank. 2. The average educated hobbyist with an hour or two per day. Fancy gadgets… do you need them? It all depends on how lazy you want to be. FYI: WWC is focused on growing, while BRS is focused on showing. As hobbyist, we need to do both. I want my tank to thrive, while being beautiful and less demanding of my time.

I keep my tanks as close to nature as possible. Skimmers do what wave action does near the beach where most fish live (think of the pillows of foam blowing across the beach) and when white capping. I've also found that "old tank syndrome" happens when you reach the max point of nutrient concentration in the water column compared to the max bacteria able to exist in our glass boxes. That's why it completely crashes in a matter of hours or days.
@BRStv Жыл бұрын
Old tank syndrome is more or less the accumulation of what we didn't know or plan for over many years. That is part of why I believe tanks with consistent water changes have much higher long-term success rates. Solves most of the unknown.
@pubwvjАй бұрын
I have been keeping aquaria salt and fresh since the 1960s. Some tanks decades old. I have never had old tank syndrome. I generally do 10% water change a week although sometimes skip. Old water goes to other tanks, a cascade to salt marsh.

12:31 This is why I've basically dreamed of automation as much as I possibly can on my aquarium. And it's not even because I don't have the time to work on it. If I can get a piece of equipment, or use even multiple pieces of equipment like a fridge, liquid foods, a dosing pump fitted to the fridge, a magnetic stirrir titrating a months worth of phytoplankton that get's automatically dosed daily. I see it as an absolute win. Maybe a very expensive win. But it's all repurposable equipment simultaniously so if it doesn't work out, everything can have it's use for you at some point.

I've never used 2nd stage rodi resin for co2 removal but I had a well and it was co2 that fouled my resin. I had 38 ppm at the he well head. I went though so much resin I first started spreading on a screen outside and it worked but using high pH solutions (reef to reef for particulars) works more completely. This would work for air co2 removal.

I don’t think anybody is suggesting that people shouldn’t take care of their pets when we talk about antibiotic resistance. We need to be more responsible though. Use less harmful methods when possible (oxolinic acid, dips instead of full tank treatment), and neutralize the chemicals before disposal. Sure antibiotics should be used sometimes, but not as much as they are being used currently.

I disagree. I don't want to challenge what you said, but I'd like to offer a different perspective: The impression I get from Josh, and most professional coral farms/retail management is they've see so many different things work, they're are hesitant to discount anything. I've personally had conversations with him when I visited Orlando, he helped me pick out two corals to take home. He was direct, enthusiastic, and tried to match his advice against my onw goals. While also staying grounded in what works for WWC and his own experience. Which is what I think restrains his comments here.

It's true that Josh and I are not going to be inflammatory and we avoid being overtly negative, which is part of acting professionally. I would like to request a new series with the significant focus on habitat in the tanks in 52se would your channel be able to do a in the wild look at commonly kept aquarium animals such as coral fish and invertebrates? Putting some context to the pictures and videos on the internet with depth flow levels par as well as some seasonal fluctuations. I know it would take a lot of travel and effort to do such a series but I think being able to see the wild reefs with a focus on giving context to commonly kept animals to help understand the some key information like growth shapes of wild coral or population density of some of the fish species on the reef.

Why not using kalk with a reactor instead of the big giant tub? It is what I do and I feed it out of the RO deposit with a dosing pump. Never had an issue! Empty the thing about once a month, throw a bunch of new kalc in and you have another month of not having to worry about it. I use the Deltec and the motor runs 24/7. Minimal footpring with all of the advantages. And the maintenance of the reactor is much easier that cleaning a big 55 gallon drum.

The moment and automated frozen feeder exists I will buy one! Most of us work all day long and typically are not around at the time of feeding, yet we still want to have fish like anthias or Copperband butterflies that will not eat pellets but still I see a lot in the hobby saying they would not see a use for an automated frozen food feeder, or that it would need at least to be able to have a week’s worth of food! I say BS! Even if it would only hold a day’s worth of frozen food it would benefit the majority of the hobbyists that are not around during the day to frequently feed frozen food to their fish. Most just dump a ton of frozen once a day and wonder why the Copperband is not doing so well. PLEASE help bring such product to market! Have Neptune buy IndCreations and sell it as a Neptune product. I would buy it without thinking twice

My philosophy has always been: The more you time spend with your tank, the better it will be. The more automation on your tank, the less time you spend with your tank. (Obviously within reason. I know jobs, family and such play an important role in this) It's like the saying, your plants grow better when you talk to them. It's not the talking that does it, it's the time you spend with them, taking care of their needs.
@Mittzie Жыл бұрын
It also comes down to the more tech you use - the more likely something can go wrong and you have to troubleshoot a million things that could be interacting with each other instead of a small handful of things that aren’t as related.

This was one of the primary points of this video. There is no underlying perfect guide book that fits all tanks, and styles it's an understanding of tools and methods. Some of which can be read or learned but in the end you just got to get your hands dirty and try it. It's not that any single piece of gear is critical, it's understanding what your goals are and selecting an approach to gear that serves those goals. This will also be the heart of the 52SE series once we get to the science and nuance of application videos. A rollermat is a great way to export nutrients and avoid related pollution and related uglies. Particularly in the first year or so in a reef tank. Eventually, the coral density may filter the water for you and it will become unnecessary. A roller mat on a tank without corals or a tank that gets fed a ton of food is a no-brainer to reduce the reliance on filters that may not be anywhere near as effective, If you are a sock user and like how they work for you but dont want to change them every three days a rollermat is also a great altrnative to that and much more consistant. All of these are true statments with near uinversal agrement from people who have used tools like these. The best advice for someone new or a first tank is less try and peice all of this together yourself and more find a sucessfull tank you like and emulate it.

I respect anyone who has a stance that an automated controller and monitor isn't necessary, but it's a low success rate outcome in most applications. I'm on a trip currently, there is no reasonable scenario where that works most days in most situations. In fact over the years I can say I've had my system/home saved by my Apex well in excess of a dozen times over the years. That doesn't mean I don't get mad at it but that's not the same thing as saying it's not necessary.
@BRStv Жыл бұрын
80% of reefers will find themselves on this path of mentalities: Controller or isn't necessary if you stay in in-tune with your tank. -> ok ok staying in tune with your tank 24/7 isn’t possible and a monitor is critical because 12-24 months in gear starts to break, we get complacent and results of small but continual mistakes show up. Ok ok a controller does have some automatic redundancy that I find invaluable and the ability to turn gear on or off remotely is nice. Ok ok , if I use this right it does make many elements of reefing/maintenance/dosing/testing, etc… easier.
