A great old song and this version with fantastic arrangement. Our music Teacher taught us this song in rural Kenya in the sixties. We went barefeet to school and identified with our crushes when we sang this song,young and innocent as we were.

It's not traditional. The words are by W. B. Yeats (1889), the music by Benjamin Britten (1923).

Not exactly. Herbert Hughes set it to music (1909) using the old Irish melody, The Maids of Mourne Shore. Britten, among others composers, just rendered it in his own arrange.

@@vithorazdovsky yes. Many composers hijacked old Irish airs. 'The Derry Air' is an example. Originally an old Irish air "Codladh an tSionnaigh" - 'The fox's Sleep'. It happens in many ancient cultures. There's the alleged plagiarising of the Taiwanese Amis "Drinking Song" some twenty years ago.

Not so. It is wholly Irish (words and air) and Britten merely published it with a few minor tweaks of his own, as did many others.
