been a cassiopeia when i was like 11 to 16, and after the disbandment i was so disappointed as a teenager - but revisiting them now about 15 years later i'm so happy for them. they're masters of their craft, and also rose to prominence out of their pure talent and hard work and sacrifice while the kpop industry was still in its beginning stages- having to fight and claw their way into making people see their talent when they were only 15 to 17 years old. 20 years later, as industry veterans, they exude such a high level of artistic maturity and excellence in their technique. Seeing Changmin hit the whistle register in this song made me tear up - it's such a mark of mastery over his vocal talent. And very significantly, Yunho's evolution in his dance style from a hard, powerful, masculine style from the Mirotic era to a fluid, sensual, somewhat acrobatic and truly *embodied* form while exuding a characteristically very sexy and confident energy was incredible to see. What i LOVE is that the vocals in this song is consistently high-pitched, ethereal, sensual, dark, mature - TVXQ has always leaned towards "aesthetically masculine" concepts, but Down shows that Changmin and Yunho's embodiment of masculinity in their music has evolved over the years, expanding their range in terms of vocal quality, dance, and especially in yunho, a kind of fulfilled freedom in the way he carries his body when he dances. For the past few years I believe, their music and concepts were not handled with much care and precision, but this has changed in this new album. Down and Rebel are i believe, songs that are (finally!) tailored carefully to both Yunho and Changmin's individual strengths and niches. I'm so happy for them, and their evolution into respected industry veterans, legends, truly rising gods from the east, and kpop daddies.
