A movie about III reich's end it's really interesting, because there isn't a lot. And this movie isn't super-caricatural on the characters, the nazis, and Hitler, only well-dosed.

It's too bad many non-German speaking people wouldn't normally give Downfall a try because they hate subtitles. However since the parodies have become so popular, even with subtitles, that I think now many will out of curiosity give this German masterpiece a closer look.

Kanies as Krebs was one of my favorite performances in the movie tbh. I specially loved the scene where Krebs demands conditions for surrender so confidently, like he had the ball in his court only to be shut down instantly by the Russians. Krebs was truly delusional but somehow he still kept some weak grip on reality and it was really interesting to watch this interpretation. Juliane as Eva was also delightful, every time she was on screen she was really mesmerizing, just watching someone trying to preserve a sense of normalcy amongst all the insanity and despite what she had decided to do... the sense that she knew her days were counted and would make the most of them no matter what... overall a really masterful performance. Another character who really caught my attention was Mohnke. Despite his loyalty he really seemed to care about civilians and his fellow soldiers and that kind of set him apart from most of the staff that lived in or frequented the bunker who didn't have anything to lose and didn't mind dragging others alongside them. I feel like Downfall managed to humanize everyone involved without condoning their actions. It's not like you feel sorry for their fate (although you do feel for the Goebbels children, Peter's family and the civilians suffering the brunt of the violence while their leaders cozy up in a bunker) since you know what they've done... but understanding that these were fellow humans and not mindless monsters is quite sobering. Anyone is capable of committing great evil.

I wish the producer, director, and actors can rest at ease that at least for me and a lot of people I know, got the message loud and clear. I watched this film a very long time ago, and will need to watch it again, but the attempt at displaying the absolute madness through authentic portrayal definitely worked. They framed the movie very well, that this specific point comes across very well. In a way, this movie does not at all deal with the utterly stunning levels of crimes of the Nazis, but that is not the point of the movies. To put it blunt and dumbed down, this movie is about those who orchestrated one of the biggest tragedy in human history, finally meeting their consequence, by complete breakdown, doubling down on their fanaticism, complete nihilism, and all the things portrayed in the movie. While Hitler discusses his 'germans deserve what they get for their failure for fulfilling the national socialist ideals' line, children and old men were paying for their responsibilities through meaningless deaths and suffering. It is of course very important to learn the history behind it of course, but for the frame of this movie, the decision for an authentic and humane portrayals were very effective. Because in the end they were also just humans just like any of us. It is all within all of us to repeat what happened. I always considered this film as a disturbing reminder of this fact, and also a very good portrayal of what always remains such a mystic moment of history for all of us.
