In response to some of the comments about the R5C, I sat down to look into what you need to do on the R5C to download images over USB, it turns out in video mode it works basically the same way as it does for every other Canon camera. Though there are some added complexities. Given the requests, and the added complexities I have a video on this that should go live in the first week of December.

Apologies, that video is currently scheduled to go live Tuesday Dec, 10th at 12PM Eastern time in the US. It got pushed from the original first week end December that I had intended for it.

I use Canon's own EOS Utility (V3.18.41) on MacOS Sequoia (15.2). It works fine and is reasonably fast. The utility won't work if some other app "owns" the connection to the camera (e.g. Preview, Lightroom, Image Capture). Be aware that Preview can be "hiding" in the background. To make sure Preview isn't active simply launch Preview then immediately quite the application. You can then launch the EOS Utility. One reason for using the utility connected to the camera as opposed to a card reason is for downloading images stored on CF express cards. Last time I looked, CR express card readers were fairly expensive.

I sat down to look into what you need to do on the R5C, it turns out in video mode it works the same way. You don't have to mess with camera settings or got into media review mode. Just plug the camera in and it'll show up in File Explorer on Windows or go into the Image Capture.app on MacOS and it'll be there. The same limitations on USB-PD also apply, if your computer can supply the right power profile, the camera will run off USB-PD too.

What if you are lazy and don’t want ti carry your computer like me, and just want ti transfer from the camera to a ssd? Can you do that?

Unfortunately no. Canon doesn't support external drives directly connected to the USB-C port.

@@PointsInFocus😢 yeah this should be good as a photographer as I age I want to leave the most weight behind, and the computer thing should be in the past

As far as I know, which is increasingly feeling like less and less, nobody supports that right now. Though you might be able to do something with a USB-C capable phone and a USB-C hub.... That actually sounds like it might be interesting to look into, so maybe I'll give that a whirl. Though it would still probably be better to use a card reader in that config as you're not draining the camera batteries to copy the files. Of course, if you're just going for backups, that's the point of the rec to multiple record function setting.

@@PointsInFocus yeah, i am about to test that I read that the iphone 15/16 pros can handle the connection to ssd at the same time than the card reader, if that works, I will be getting one of those only thing is that I currently have the 13pro i need to get hold on one of the newer ones.
