This system is exactly what Indian farmers did before the British came. They grew crops and with every crops they grew lentils like chickpeas and other legumes to have nitrogen in soil. They used heavy manure from cows that every farmer kept for dairy and ox that used for ploughing but not deep ploughing. The British scientist which traveled to India in 1890 wrote how the Indian farmers in India harvested crops 3 to 4 times a year. the reason why the Mughal empire was wealthiest than any kingdoms in Europe for this precise reason. This is all very romantic and fascinating but if Amish farming techniques were used universally, we might all starve to death. We live among some of the most productive farmers on the planet with a sizable Amish community nearby. The difference in what their fields yield is astounding!

Farming has become industrial I live in Kansas trying to buy a small farm and all the land is rural suburbs. That's basically residential not agricultural. People you need to understand you can't eat without a farmer so help us keep land farms and not houses. Edwards county Missouri has land for sale the already got it map out... Go look

Numerous university studies have shown that per hour of work & per dollar of purchased inputs the Amish match or even exceed neighboring "industrial" style farming methods in production and actually exceed them in profitability. Also, this vid was incorrect, you can farm up to a quarter section (160 AC) with 6 horses and maintain production and fertility.

The women and daughters care for the household duties and the yard. The men and sons deal with the livestock and farming or whatever else the family profession us

Not a very accurate view of the working Amish farmers. Most rely on large family's to get work done. they also hire custom operators for spraying and other chores they aren't allowed by church to do. They do use fertilizers and they also rely on jobs off farm to cover living costs, just like everyone else. They don't buy any insurance, instead rely on the Amish community church members to cover each other. Not sure how much income taxes they are subject to, but they don't pay into Social Security. As for horses, the rest of the farmers in the world won't ever revert to using them for anything but recreation. The general public will starve if that ever becomes the only way to farm. The Amish would not make it if they had to adhere to the laws the rest of have to obey. The church covers them and the church also gives them exemption from many taxes and laws.

Never been happy with the treatment of their animals. Draft horses can be worked way too hard and then sent to slaughter. Need to have enough horses to rotate. They also operate puppy mills which is deplorable. I know I'll get criticism, but my opinion, and I believe caring for animals humanely and with compassion is the right way to go.

@@willbass2869 Just because there wasn't any poor treatment or puppy mills in this video doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I have seen, read, and heard of examples. I have seen draft and carriage horses in kill pens, I have seen puppy mill dogs living in horrible conditions. If you haven't, maybe you should do a little research. I didn't mention anyone by name, so slander, I don't think so. This is my opinion and personal experience, so I will stand by this, whole heartedly. Why am I writing this when I don't give a flying @#$% what you think, I don't know. Go away and tell somebody else.

You are right. They send 100k horse to mexico to slaughter a year. They drive their horses until they fall over dead. Largest puppy mills in US. When they are shut down for inhumane violations, they format a new LLC under another new. Children treated as slaves with 6th grade efucation...control. women have it the worst. @Садоводство horses on pasture allows soil to take a test from constant cropping. Also, ground too rocky or steep for normal cropping. Fukuoka is fine for gardening.....but you don't feed complex societies with tens of millions of people by throwing rice/barley seed by hand

The average Amish farm IS NOT just 40 acres. 40 acres wouldn't even feed their horses for a year. Family groups farm large farms, hundreds of acres. Their soil management isn't always great. Wind erosion removing top soil is a big problem. This is due to plowing in the fall, the old way, so the winter freeze/thaw cycles break down the clouds. Then they can just disk and plant in the spring. This video is not accurate in many ways.

The problem with saying this is only conducive to small scale is ignorant parroting and a lack of vision. It's also to not see the obvious right in front of your face. Lemme enlighten you people. Let's instead of considering the Pennsylvania Amish in Lancaster a bunch of discrete families we consider them a company called "the Amish". They aren't farming 40 acres of contiguous land they are managing in this traditional way 400,000 acres of basically contiguous land in lancaster!! just because they do so in a fiefdom using family units doesn't mean this is not proof of this working at scale. Rename dads managers and wives foreman and the religious leaders executives and it's easy to see you are all short sighted fools parroting negativity instead of ingenuity and refinement
