Oh man, i passed my driving test 2 years ago because of you, learned how to parallel park, go uphill in heavy traffic, engine brake on a very steep downhill all because of you, and now i want to be able to accelerate fast when i'm trying to overtake and do it smoothly (no jerking motion) and here you are again, teaching me! Thank you so much for all of your videos. Love from Philippines.

This is probably the most informative car video I’ve ever watched. I’ve only ever driven automatic cars but my partner is super into performance driving and I would always look like a deer in headlights whenever they would talk about how an engine works and all the cool stuff a car can actually do. I think I’m a pretty smart cookie but I just couldn’t comprehend how all the parts work together and the visual demonstrations were super helpful

I've been driving for over a year and I still watch the driver education video's. You never stop learning, and Richards video's especially discuss a lot of higher level techniques that you'd never learn from a driving instructor, such as extracting more power from the car. I'll leave you with this: when I passed my test, my examiners words were: "so you've passed, which means congratulations, now you can learn to drive"

I got my license in an automatic in November. However we have a manual at home so immediately after passing I started learning manual. I don't get to drive much, because I live close to the city center. Right now my only struggle is going from 5th to 4th when exiting the highway. 6th to 5th is easy enough. When I do drive it's mostly in the city so gearing from 4th down to 1st is no problem, because I've done it so many times over and over again. Now I just need to master 5th to 4th.💪

I've been driving for one year now, and I still don't understand what rev matching is. I watched A LOT of your videos and it did definitely help me learn all the necessary skills needed. I feel like I'm a bad driver for not knowing this for a year now
@greatmatt3012 жыл бұрын
You aren't! My mother who has been driving for almost 40 years now didn't know what it was and i would consider her an experienced, good driver (live in Canada so there are alot more automatics but she has driven and currently drives a manual). She usually doesnt go down in gears and if she does she lets the clutch rev match :) Maybe i can explain rev matching (challenge accepted) When a car is in motion and the clutch is engaged, driving like normal the speed of your transmission have to be at the same speed as your engine (this is why if he floored it in 4th gear his RPM's didn't shoot to the moon immediately but instead has to increase the speed of the transmission and by extension tires which is difficult like he mentioned ). This is also why if you rev your car and just drop the clutch when parked your car will go ballistic, the engine is moving at one speed and the tires/transmission is moving at another speed (or not at all) and you are connecting the two causing that power to be transferred to the clutch and transmission instantly, your clutch cant handle that and will slip and and catch and slip trying to get the tires/tranny to match the engine. If you slowly lift your foot to the bite point you aren't slamming the two together but letting the two match speed slowly! Now if you tires are already spinning instead of letting your clutch match the two speeds (when in motion it is almost always the engine that will change speed to match the tires unlike when you are moving away from a stop) you can instead increase the speed of the engine yourself by giving it gas so when the clutch meets the engine they are going at almost the same speed :)
@aladyoullprobablylike15752 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the detailed explanation! I forgot to add in my comment that I didn't watch the full video as I was commenting. When he was demonstrating rev matching, the 2nd one, where he slowly lifted up the clutch until the revs went up, and just held it at that point, and finally lifting up the clutch, is the method that I've been doing when rev matching. I saw it in his other videos, but I was always thinking that I am doing it wrong and was afraid that I would damage up the clutch in long term. So I stopped doing it and when I decide to go in a lower gear, I would just make brake slowly, but not entirely that I would affect traffic, and make sure the speed and revs match the lower gear.
@greatmatt3012 жыл бұрын
@@aladyoullprobablylike1575 i think that method is what most normal people do, to my understanding that adds a negligible amount of wear on the clutch and is designed around taking it :) The only time i ever downshift while im moving is if i need the power to accelerate quickly or i am taking a corner but in that instance my speed is low enough the clutch has to do almost nothing! Something driving school taight me and my driving examiner even mentioned is how using your brake or slowing down unnecessarily can create a hindrance on the road so it's my preference to put a little more work on the clutch (unless its going to have to rev up to like 5k but you probably shouldn't be shifting that low if thats the case XD) then slow down if its not needed :)
@ConquerDriving2 жыл бұрын
You don't need to know what rev matching is to be a good driver. This is an advanced driving technique mostly for enthusiasts these days as you don't need to do it. This video may help kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4PRgYinZ96oqpY
@j0lel6662 жыл бұрын
@@greatmatt301 kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZm0i6OAjdiFpNk this video explains probably the best how to revmatch. Letting out clutch slowly wears the clutch more than revmatching. Also i barely need to use brakes at all cuz i revmatch to lower gears. If there is no traffic behind me i might sometimes downshift couple times to red lights and end up at the light without having to touch brakes at all.

I’m 57 years old and have been driving since my early twenties. So a bit embarrassing to say that these videos and Richard explanations have reinvigorated my driving I have always loved driving and will often go out for a spin just for the pleasure. But over the last 10’or so years i slipped into dual clutch cars and became quite lazy Just recently i have purchased a little sports car and it’s manual and i realised that my gear changing technique was appalling! Two things i’ve now improved thanks to Richard are speed of up shift (not coming off the gas until the clutch is fully in) and heel and toeing. What a difference it makes. My heel and toe technique is a bit slow and i really have to think but it’s soooo much smoother and so satisfying. I suspect it’s also better for clutch wear. So finally i’m beginning to feel worthy of actually having a sports car Keep them coming

If I have massive ratio changes I tend to go into neutral before the next gear. E.g. I'm bombing off the lights in my mini cooper, but there's a long straight flat road with a 30 mph limit. I can rev first gear, but then go into neutral to wait for the revs to fall for 5th or 6th at 1200 rpm, which is fine for holding a steady 30 on a level road using the least fuel. Some people call it double declutching, and is mostly unnecessary in a synchronised transmission, but it does help prolong their life for large ratio changes as a Citroen I had developed that rattling synchro sound if I didn't do it.

I'm crazy about making the synchros last forever, so unless I'm in a real hurry, I will double-clutch when downshifting. Say you're at 4th gear & 30 mph. The input shaft is spinning fairly slowly, and as soon as you put the gear into neutral, it will start to slow down even further. But lower gear means input shaft needs to spin faster (same 30 mph), so any attempt at putting into a lower gear means synchro has to work at it. From 4th, clutch down (can be made optional), drop it into neutral, *clutch back up* (flywheel is now connected to input shaft), blip the accelerator to spin everything faster, clutch down again, put it in gear (2nd, for example), then do the rest.

Hi RIchard, hope you are doing well. Thanks for another superb post. I learned rev matching from your channel about a week or two back and am able to execute it fairly well except in one situation: when I am very slow on third gear and shift down to second with a rev match the car tends to speed up a little (not much of a jerk). Is rev matching unsuitable in such situations or am I making some mistake? No problem doing this when I am at speed on fourth gear and shift down to second (which helps a lot when I am climbing a flyover with traffic on it). Would be grateful for a response.
