True. But I can understand him too. He really did love her. But Edith had been so insistant and he didn't want to hurt her, so he caved in. And ended up hurting her even more in the end. But he still did the right thing. Divorce was not an option in that class. He looked dreadful. He probably haven't slept, wondering if he was doing the right thing for both of them. While I agree to a point, if you have any serious doubts left on the wedding day, as sucky as it is, it's still better and kinder to call it off on that day then to get married and then be stuck with unhappy consequences. Especialy in an age where divorce was not done/scandal. In the end he did it out of love for her. And while the timing was awefull, it was still an act of love. I dont hate him at all, but I do wish he had said something sooner. At any rate I dont think people who leave others at the altar are villains. Rather they are making the hard choice to not go trough with something that feels wrong despite the huge amount of peer presure to do it anyway. Yes, it would be better if they made the choice earlier, and yes people will get hurt. but that hurt is still better then a wrong merriage filled with doubts and guilt. Intention DOES matter. And his intention was for Edith's sake. He wanted to be with her, but he didn't want to tie a young women down to a man like him in the end. And when the moment to tie the knot came it became clear there was no way back. Speak now or forever hold your tongue and all that. So he spoke up. He was not a bad man. Lets not demonise people who cancel weddings at the last moment. As thats still better then the alternative, getting married when it doesn't feel right. Some people dont realise this untill the wedding day. Better late then never applies here.

In a way, Sir Anthony saved Edith's life. She would've never met Michael Gregson otherwise.. never would've had Marigold, nor inherited Gregson's publishing company, nor pursued a fulfilling career in writing/publishing/editing and she would've definitely not been able to meet nor marry the love her life who would turn out to be a Marquess. I applaud him for letting her go despite his obvious fondness for her. I don't think Edith loved Sir Anthony either, at least not truly. He was simply the only one to give her his full attention and devotion, something that she's unfortunately been given nothing of all her life. It's no wonder she wanted to cling to him. So all in all, good for Edith for going through this tough time!

@sarasamaletdin45743 жыл бұрын
@ John Jones She would have had other children and while she would have been unlikely to get into publishing specifically she could have done something else, novel writing for example wasn’t seen as odd for women of the class by that point, and actually popular in a decades time. She would not have become a Marquises but I don’t care for titles (her home would have been good one in any case). And of course she would not have married who she did but it doesn’t mean she would have not been happy with Anthony or could not have remarried if he died. And the main point is that leaving someone at the altar is terrible. He could have left the day before or actually gone through with the ceremony and the party but not the wedding night and gotten an annulment, it would’ve been less humiliating for her. And Edith suffered a great deal in what happened, just because the end was good it doesn’t mean it was inevitable either.

Well, I thought Edith was far more evil than Mary in season 1. Calling her a slet and throw her and her entire family into a huge scandal and ruin

Irl, Mary (of real world) would apologize to Edith only because she married well and will be useful to her. Toxic siblings will always remain toxic siblings. Ppl don't change

Omg i can get behind this concept. The curse was lifted when Mary brought Edith and Bertie back together

*Marys words to Edith only proves that Blood is thicker than Water, Family is always Family no matter what*
@kaik73665 жыл бұрын
the full quote is "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." Meaning the Exact. Opposite. Chosen family and friends will have your back much more frequently than toxic, dysfunctional relatives.

Kai K How interesting. So people use that saying completely incorrectly? That’s hilarious, considering the fervor, with which it is frequently uttered!

Can you imagine how bad it would have been if Mary hadn't wished her luck? The church might have fallen in and killed the whole bunch of them.

Sybil was my favourite and then Edith . Mary was Cold, and nasty but loved all her sexual rendezvous. From the Caribbean.

I really disliked Mary in this series! I didn’t get how men loved her mean a$$ 😂 🤣
@jehannethompson14324 жыл бұрын
She had many good qualities but people overlook them. Once you get to know her she’s a wonderful person. She might say something mean but doesn’t define her as a character. That’s why she is my favourite in the entire series along with Sybil. Oh Sybil 😩😭

I feel very bad for Edith, but this scene explains why I like Mary more. Mary was much nicer to Edith on her wedding day than Edith was to Mary.
@amsaric5 жыл бұрын
Well, it was very easy for Mary to be nice to Edith on her wedding day when she had everything she ever wanted in the world coming true that same day: she had the love of her life, she had the finances to save her home... Mary was always “much nicer” when she had everything but the moment she was miserable she was horrible to Edith. As Edith got older, even in her misery she wasn’t unkind to Mary. And she had such a rough life, truly. She was definitely horrid to Mary when she was younger though Mary often provoked it.
@GoldenRose1165 жыл бұрын
the only day to be honest. Most of the time Edith is nicer to Mary then the other way around. Especially after Matthew died
@tanayac5 жыл бұрын
Not to take sides, but let's not forget Edith's reputation destroying letter to the Turkish ambassador in s1. She had no reason to do it, other than jealousy and sadness. To blame Mary for being engaged Patrick is silly - he was not a chicken she bought, but a man who made his choice.
@tanayac5 жыл бұрын
Also, Edith's behavior with the Drewes over Marigold was so phenomenally selfish that I lost all sympathy for her. Yes, I understand she wanted her child back, but to not give a damn about the people who saved her ass and had their lives destroyed was sickening to watch.
@GoldenRose1165 жыл бұрын
@@tanayac She did it because her parents always ignored her and in basically every scene Mary was a bitch to her and mocked her behind her back. plus what was she suppose to do with the Drewes? Its not her fault mrs.Drew was kinda crazy and mr. Drew never told her.

Agreed but at the time it was downright humiliating. It justified her father’s earlier efforts to break them up. Edith chased that man throughout their relationship. I believe that they loved each other but it was a poor match.
