I'm from NYC and visit this town often by bus in order to make my way to a nearby campground in neighboring New Milford PA. Upon arrival from the outskirts towards downtown you get this very depressed feeling about the place and immediately see that it's seen some better days. But downtown is definitely beautiful with great architecture, all captured well on this video. The people are also very nice. The place just needs a hook, a draw. I mean all those beautiful waterways & hills surrounding it, etc. Here's hoping for better days ahead. Btw I love Michelangelo's On Court Street, their chicken parm, those garlic knots! Had to be said.

@ eyestoenvy All of the northeast of the USA (in reality --all the way west to Chicago) have formerly prosperous cities, towns, villages, hamlets that were once places where an industry provided a livelihood for millions of people (across the country). That is, before the great off-shoring (Late 1960's/1970's) of America's industry. Most of these locations have decent architecture; that needs to be rehabilitated in some way (mostly inside) The state has invested millions in hooks/tourist draws along the Old Erie Canal[1] with bike and hiking trails as well as trails (Empire State Trail) that runs along waterways that incorporate existing secondary roads as well as dedicated trails 1.) Along the Old Erie Canal the old towpaths have been paved or made level with crushed stone The original Erie Canal (aka: " *Clinton's Ditch*) was built 1817--1825. The expanded/improved Erie Canal was built 1836-1862 (aka: the *OLD Erie Canal*) on a route parallel and close to the original canal. A canal built for motorized barges replaced the Old Erie Canal it was named the Barge Canal (b. 1905--1918) It follows a different route using canalized rivers. NYS currently has 4 operating canals.

i'm originally from Binghamton NY, my father was a police officer in Binghamton. Retired many years ago in 1976. He still lives there on the Northside of Binghamton as well as my brother and his family living on South Mountain near Ross Park area..A lot has changed since I visited Binghamton last..I'm in California now with my family. Haven't been back home in a few years because of the pandemic situations. Hopefully this year during the Christmas holidays. My grandparents settled in Binghamton many many years ago from the Czech Republic to work in the Endicott Johnson Shoe factories when they were running. Binghamton was a beautiful city when I was growing up, all the stores were open & the streets were packed with shoppers before the Oakdale Mall moved in, that's about when Binghamton downtown slowly disappeared and shops were closing down..But all and all thank you so much for the trip down memory lane..😊

My family lived in this area for generations. They shopped in Binghamton in the 40's - 60's. I married and left the area in 1962 and have not revisited the area since the early 2000's. I appreciate this tour and seeing there has been so much progress in taking down old bldg's, preserving some of the beautiful bldg's, and making places for the college students to go. Thanks for doing this!

Thanks for sharing - very enjoyable video! (Sorry you had to deal with that goof on the river walk...) I was born in Binghamton and grew up in the area in the 1950's and 1960's. As several people have already noted, the building shown at 3:41 of your video was actually the YWCA. When I was a teenager the YMCA was down the street from Phil's Gift Shop before moving to a new location which I believe is still its current location. The old library building at 5:07 was indeed a Carnegie donation. Look up above the columns in the front of the building, I think it acknowledges his gift. He was one of the earliest American billionaires and felt that it was disgraceful to die rich so he gave away most of his money, much of it given to build libraries. I was in there many times when I was a kid. My dad had an office in the Press Building shown around 8:29 in your video. There was a great view from the 11th floor and I remember the actual printing presses running in the basement. They were visible from the street and provided some great entertainment. I toured the Binghamton Press on grade school or Cubs trips; although I'm in my 70's now, I still remember the smell of the Linotype machines and the lead plates that they produced to print the paper. Yes, you did pronounce "Collier" correctly. My dad had an office on Collier Street before moving to the Press Building. I believe that the vacant lot you walked by after passing Collier Street used to house Drazen's, a "high end" (for Binghamton) women's clothing store. An old picture can be found here: www.newyorkupstate.com/news/2017/01/21_iconic_upstate_ny_places_we_miss_restaurants_stores_and_roadside_memories.html Continuing down the street was a Woolworth's. Boscov's (14:02) used to be Fowler's Department Store. Funly enough, I think I still have one of their bags somewhere... The building you described as the Federal Courthouse was in fact the Post Office before post office moved to a larger (and newer) building.

This was so fun to see. I moved away from the Binghamton area in the mid-90's and haven't been back in many years. I used to work in the Security Mutual building, the First National building (for First City National Bank) and the building across the street that had the fire (for Blue Cross/Blue Shield). The First National building is beautiful inside. I am so glad you took a peek at the interior. I so clearly remember riding that escalator up to the 2nd floor every day when I was a bank teller. That was around 1977. Time sure flies!!

FYI the Justice Building was never empty. The old jail that was on the 6th and 7th floors was empty for a few years, but the building itself was never empty. At least not completely. The DA's office and Probation were there as were Court offices after the Sheriff's Office moved to Upper Front St.

Thank you for this video, it brought back a lot of memories of when I attended the university there in the 1980's. I can't believe Boscov's department store is still there! Back in the day there was a beautiful Art Deco Greyhound bus station somewhere near the parking lot you pointed out, it would be such a loss if it wasn't saved. Summers in Binghamton were so different because the city seemed like it was in a perpetual state of siesta. I think you have captured that mood in this video, it seems it's always been that way. Check out a film from the early 1990's filmed right in those beautiful buildings you were pointing out. It's called Liebestrum. It's an unusual film with Bill Pullman and Kim Novak.

Thanks for the video, was there way back in 1990 or so to visit a friend. We were nearer the Vestal area (in fact, I walked down to Vestal one day). Was up there when the Whalers were still their hockey team. I remember a hotel that had a club in it where I saw a couple of bands: Triphammer, Inside Out and another band whose drummer worked at the hotel. Saw and met a young Jay Mohr and a few other comedians at a nearby comedy club. Tried hard to find these areas to jog my memory as I remember Binghamton being really beautiful in it's early American architecture. I do remember Floyd Patterson, ex-champion boxer was signing autographs at Boscov's and seeing him walk out. I would love to go and retrace that river walk from the residential side to the downtown area again someday! Thanks again!!!

We said no. I didn't see that crazy man until several minutes later. He told me not to look at him and was very intimidating. He may have thrown some object. I walked away quickly. I'm trying to locate a career company who gave workshops for women reentering workforce. They held them in the hotel which is NOW Doubletree. I phoned them. But they didn't know name of hotel on Water Street which they took over. Next to Boscovs. Anyone remember?

@@Lori66angel you’ll for sure find something. Check out Endicott. Dirt cheap housing options…especially if you don’t mind some renovation work.
