These were the most beloved shows of all time, with a cast of wonderful and relatable characters. There seemed to be one character these shows had in common. An unassuming star, fan favorite that one day, vanished into thin air or sometimes worse simply replaced by a worse version. We'd argue these cast members should have had more screen time but maybe thats why they were thrown off the ship. Tales of astronomical salaries, on air scandals drama, secret feuds affairs and those that just didn't want to be in the limelight anymore, these arethe stories of those who left at the top.

The photo you have is of Radar O'Reily. He was not killed off the show MASH. He was shipped home safely. Col. Blake died when the plane he was flying home on was shot down. No other main characters were killed off, though Hawkeye went nuts when a baby on the bus he was on was killed to keep it quiet.

Dick York quit because of his health. He had back problems after a serious fall and his health deteriorated from there when he got emphysema. Suzanne Somers got fired because demanded more money

Dick York's back injury occurred on the set while filming the movie They Came to Cordura (1959) with Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth, he suffered a permanent, disabling back injury. In York's own words, "Gary Cooper and I were propelling a handcar carrying several 'wounded' men down the railroad track. I was on the bottom stroke of this sort of teeter-totter mechanism that made the handcar run. I was just lifting the handle up as the director yelled 'cut!' and one of the 'wounded' cast members reached up and grabbed the handle. Now, instead of lifting the expected weight, I was suddenly, jarringly, lifting his entire weight off the flatbed - 180 pounds or so. The muscles along the right side of my back tore. They just snapped and let loose. And that was the start of it all: the pain, the painkillers, the addiction, the lost career.

James Garner. His “Rockford” character seemed like he’d be an awesome uncle to have. No doubt he’d tell you what a dumbazz you were for screwing up, but he’d help you with the trouble you got in, then be stand by you when you faced the consequences. CORRECTION: The Ropers did not "move to California", as you said, after leaving Three's Company. The apartment building they owned in Three's Company was in Santa Monica, California. They sold that apartment building and moved to an upscale community, Cheviot Hills, a neighborhood on the westside of the city of Los Angeles, California. They moved approximately 13 miles away.

People often forget that the Threes Company / Roper's/ Threes a Crowd pattern exactly followed the pattern set by Man About the House / George and Mildred / Robin's Nest which were the original shows in England.

Did anyone notice Joyce Dewitt was always wearing either tights or pantyhose? She refused to work bare-legged. This caused conflict between her and the show's producers & it endeared her to hosiery manufacturers, and she became the spokeswoman for L'eggs pantyhose in the late 1970s.

@@lauragardner7210 That's weird, I've always worn pantyhose on stage behind my drums playing 2 to 4 hours per gig and, even though I'd be sweating like a pig (my leotard was soaked), my pantyhose stayed almost completely dry. If they GOT wet, it only took about 2 to 5 minutes for them to dry. They were a HUGE help to me, keeping the sweat from my legs getting onto my arms and hands and making it impossible to hold my sticks! I nearly always wore No Nonsense so, maybe they made them different from other brands.

She made it to the delivery room on a gurney and they were cutting her clothes off as I was being born. Later, she and I bonded as we watched The Rockford Files.

Dick York was my favourite! Now that I know what ended his career I have a lot of empathy for him. I was in my 30’s when my spinal diseases started hitting me. Then shoulders, wrists, knees, hips, but not my ankles? Inherited radiation ☢️ I get it and I get him. You want to work but you can’t without medication. You don’t want the medication so you wean off it and go through hell. You can’t work because you need the drugs to work but you’re not going to take them cause it starts the cycle again. I know his pain and he was still a very kind man until his death. That shows huge compassion and kindness from a suffering man. 😔 ❤

BRAVO sweetheart ! i concur with all you said ,i fell under opiums spell in my early years after many long probs i stopped only too find my body suffering many DIFFERANT ill effects {mind and body} for the last 25-30 yrs i no longer abuse {get hi} but take as prescribed a LEGAL amount {as far as state driving laws} for severe pain , im told i should,and could legal wise take more BUT iv learned a bit of pain and suffering are good for the soul {attitude} more power to you !!

Thank you 🙏 you are the bestest 🤗🥰 I live at Oxenford on the Gold Coast in Queensland Australia and Christmas night, they’re now saying it was a Tornado hit us at 10:30pm. We don’t get them normally. Our fences our down and roof damage but we are all ok at our house. Our neighbours are great, no fence so lucky we are friends! The worst was 33 -36 degree Celsius days and nights, no fans or air conditioning 😂😂 It ‘‘twas lovely to see your comment after a hot, boring and miserable 3 days. My big 40 kg American Staffy who may look a bit like a huge pit Bull much prefers the air conditioning and won’t run away, I’m just scared someone might steal him. My 18 yrs old shaved Ragdoll cat has a cosy blanket on the end of my bed. His fur is growing back quickly. Too hot in Oz for all that fur! Back when “Friends” was still in production, there came a time when salary negations took place. At the time, the cast settled on parity, which was very unusual at that time, and on its face, looked rather like blackmail. It took me several years to understand that this was good business. It bothered me, however, that this would certainly result in cancellation because of the sheer cost involved. Time went on and this gambit became more common, leading to a better take for the actors, but still presented cost problems for the network. This system is still working itself out and I now understand that it is business as usual. Frankly, I think it’s a good sign that the members of a cast and the networks can work together in this fashion.

Sorry, but Friends DID NOT end due to high costs or the cast salaries. It was the hugest and most watched sitcom generating a fortune for all involved. I saw an interview with Jennifer Anniston who said she felt guity for the end of Friends. She was getting more and more big screen movie rolls and just couldn't juggle it all. She said spoke to the other cast who relunctantly agreed without her, the show would lose popularity. So the show they ended on a high. She told the producers a year before the show ended and the writers had a year to work the script so the ending seemed perfect.

Alright some clarification here as I don't like nastiness and have thought about it. You are thinking about scripts and reports. Killed off is a generic term in production, much like theatre has generic terms covering the different things that lead to the same place. In this particular meaning killed off = an end. It doesn't just mean a character or actor. It can mean the end to a situation in a story for instance. Along the lines of it's a wrap. On to the next. I took from my experiences that being what the title meant. Possibly the OP didn't. Possibly also we live in different places in the world and different phrases or slang are used. Don Knotts is a comic genius and he was good on anything, even Mr. Furly, but he’ll always be remembered as Barney Fife, who is often voted the most memorable television character in TV history. Barney became an icon for the overzealous cops. I have used the name many times when encountering one of those kind of cops. I’ve said, “We’re dealing with a Barney Fife here..”. That’s when you’ve encapsulated a type of person, especially a cop. Knotts did it brilliantly. He wasn’t really supposed to have that big of a part when the show began. After all, it was called the Andy Griffith Show, but it didn’t take long for Knotts to shine though and upstage everyone.

No, Andy Griffith said he also started out as a similar type of character Knotts played. But he quickly discovered the show was better when he played more of a straight man to Knott's comedy. He was right. Watch the first season and you'll see Griffith's character change from heavy hick to a more responsible man-with-the-solutions. He was still very funny, but he knew when to push Knotts to the front. Theirs was a great pairing.

Mr Furley was the best. I have always wanted a landlord like him. Mr Roper was good too, but Furley was a friend to them. He even helped Jack pay for his Bistro by lending him the money. This video contradicts many past reporting that Gary Burghoff and producers both agreed it was time to leave MASH. He had become toxic on set. He no longer wanted to continue, and cast\crew didn't want to work with him. It is revisionist history to suggest he was offered an increase in millions to continue, when producers were unlikely to renew his contract. The situation was "You have the options to quit, or be fired". The character was written out either way. Everybody involved with the production were glad to have him gone, including Burghoff. Of course, over time nobody involved with the show is going to trash talk each other over stuff that happened many decades ago, so if they say anything, it is the good memories, not the bad.

This is the story I've read too, and I think it's probably closer to the truth. I read that he was actually quite the jerk. Personally, I cheered when he left MASH, and thought the show was vastly improved by his absence. A forty-something year old man still trying to pretend to be some clueless farm boy was not only ridiculous, but detracted from the direction the show had taken. And I'm fully aware this isn't a popular opinion ha ha.

I never like Little House that much, but my favorite character was Nelly Olsen. I liked that she was bad, it made her seem more real than the picture perfect Ingels family. The books were great and I felt the show did a disservice to the books. But, I can't say it was a bad show, it was too moralistic for me. I preferred The Waltons, because the characters were written and portrayed more realistically. Little House's style of drama patterned after Bonanaza, and probably was pitched as a show of LIttle Joe and his own family, at least in terms of how the audience would perceive it after just one year Bonanza had left NBC.

"Killed Off" is a very deceptive title. "Written out" is the case for most of these. By title, one would assume the video would be about the lead-up for the characters departure and emotional outcome. Instead, it's a collection about why actors left the shows they were on that include 6 that were "killed off" as a result (the first not until 10 minutes in).

Loved Dick York's work! This may be a slightly niggly item, but I would beg to differ that Dick York was "addicted" to opioids. Rather, he grew "dependent" on them for pain relief. "Addiction" suggests that he sought them out for pleasure.

Have a soft spot for Joyce DeWitt, I was around the age of 10 or 11 and suffering the grips of puberty, I would watch Threes Company and was very fond of Janet Joyce"s character, at a time when most young men would be turned on by the ditzy blond I chose Janet as my television muse, (RIP)

That is interesting in regards to Jamie Farr's comment about Gary Burghoff...because on an Entertainment Tonite Weekend special, they did a behind-the-scenes look at MASH and Jamie Farr said "We loved Radar, just hated Gary." The Late Larry Linville (Frank Burns) also has some words in regards to Gary Burghoff's reported tardiness to the set many times...he said "Gary would say he got caught in traffic due to where he lived, So I told him then just move."

it's according to an A&E Documentary that Dick Sargent was the first actor up for the role of Darren Stephens but was unavailable and so that's how Dick York got it but then Dick Sargent got to succeed Dick York in the role and there are mixed reviews some saying he was a good successor others saying it wasn't the same but I even know of someone who thought that they were the same and even thought that it was that the same actor got a haircut.But then was told by some that the first one had to leave for some reason. But also, just imagine if Dick Sargent wasn't unavailable at first and would get to be in the entire 8 season run of the show?

Your pants/outtakes story from MASH is insanely complicated. I don't know WHY you bring up the movie -- neither Alan Alda nor "Col. Potter" were in that movie, although Gary Burghoff was. That Alda tweet may well be a reference to that scene between Radar and Col. Potter, but that scene took place in the series and it has nothing to do with the movie. For the record, Alan Alda has a great podcast and in at least one episode, he hosted something of a MASH reunion that included Loretta Swit, Jamie Farr, Mike Farrell, and Gary Burghoff.
