I don't think he believed in himself or he wouldn't have sabotage himself as he did. Lucy, came from an American Culture so it is difficult to merge two culture together despite their innate talent which Desi had to maintain his family with Lucy and with his parents. This is common why he worked so hard so he and his family would not be put back in the bad situation where he had to flee Cuba to survive and why he came to the USA.

Yup! I watched the I Love Lucy reruns… I was born in ‘62. The episode that I always remember is when Lucy & Ethel go to work at a candy factory & their job is to wrap the chocolates that are coming down the conveyor belt. At first they manage, but the conveyor belt is sped up & soon Lucy is shoving her mouth full of chocolates & shoving them down her dress. She really was the Queen of Comedy!

Consider this, The "I Love Lucy" was so popular that the US Presidential election was over-shadowed by "I Love Lucy Show." This I learned by reading in some magazine. That how "super popular" it was. What I do admire about Desi and Lucy is they had picnics year after year for those that worked for them. How wonderful Desi was. Whether you can believe it or not - Lucy was a lot more reclusive than Desi which made their marriage tough too besides his cheating and drinking. There were no compromise and why things didn't work towards the end of their marriage. However, Desi and Lucy made sure they stayed together for their children until it became unbearable. They never stopped loving each other. Oh, Luci, their daughter admitted that Lucy was a control freak which can throw off their partner if she/or he were that aggressive in life.

I do not think they ever stopped loving one another. I think it was a very painful relationship in later years. I Love Lucy was a tremendous success for many reasons---the scripts were excellent, and the cast, most notably Lucy, were very talented and had good chemistry with one another on-screen. You could see that Lucy and Ricky truly loved one another because real life Lucy and Desi truly loved one another, and it shone through in their characters on-screen. That real life love helped make the series special, too. I can never understand why Desi kept doing the things he did, though. If you love someone, what is it in you that allows you to continuously hurt them? I think it has to do with men's egos, especially Latin men. Sleeping around is part and parcel of their culture, and it is expected in his culture---not so much in the U.S., but plenty of men everywhere do it. Desi's life was a mixed bag, but he ended up a huge success with Lucy. They made a lot of money and had two beautiful children. Why that did not constitute the world for him, I cannot say. He was supposedly an alcoholic, so I am sure that had something to do with it. It is just so sad that he threw away his wife and kids. In any case, Lucy and Desi and everyone connected with the show left the world a priceless legacy. I love Lucy and always will. I Love Lucy was a very happy and bright spot in my days during a time in history of terrible suffering---thinking especially here of Vietnam. Every afternoon I savoured one hour of telly that let me escape the real world outside and made me laugh out loud and feel spooky suspense respectively---I Love Lucy and Dark Shadows. I watched a lot of telly in those days, and I really enjoyed so many programmes, but I Love Lucy and Dark Shadows were the highlight of the day each week. I feel so very sad because I think Lucy died feeling lonely and sad. She worked so hard to make a marriage and a career with Desi work, but it takes two to make it work, and Desi somehow was not committed enough. How ironic that two people who brought so much laughter and love to the entire world struggled to keep it alive in their personal lives.

@@jamba622 I honestly think that the "mutual hatred," or "could not stand each other," ideas, between the television couple (William Frawley/Vivian Vance) have taken on of life of its own in the many decades since "I Love Lucy" ended. They disliked each other and were never photographed dancing together at the "Brown Derby" (on their days off). And so what? The fact that these two brilliant actors were able to generate such great chemistry between themselves gives tremendous credit to their acting abilities. Fred and Ethel were brilliant together.

When I was a kid the best part of staying home from school and pretending I was sick was watching I love Lucy which I believe came on at nine in the morning. It made life seem better just to watch Lucy and her shenanigans. I loved how she interacted with Ethel Mertz her neighbor and watching how the two of them got into so much trouble. One of my favorite episodes is when they were in Paris and they created their own fashion statement with, I believe, upside down waste baskets as hats. And then on the same boulevard a few weeks later those fashions were copied by a Parisian designer! Every time I hear the theme music I’m instantly back in bed in my little room smiling away and hoping I don’t have to go back to school the next day!

One of my favorites is "Paris at Last" when Lucy is arrested for passing counterfeit bills. Lucy tries to explain by speaking English to Ricky, who speaks Spanish to the drunk, who translates into German for the policeman, who translates into French for the police captain. They go back-and-forth doing this several times. I also especially like the closing scene of “California Here We Come,” with the Ricardos and Mertzes singing “California, Here I Come" in the convertible.

Desi was a genius. He never rehearsed those shows. He would read the script once and know everyone's lines....not just his. He learned English as an adult. Bandleader. Sitcom producer. Invented modern camera work. He kept the negatives! Bought the movie studio that had once fired him. Lucy gets a lot of credit but Desi was the true genius.

More like they both were in their own right. From what I understand when my sister went to a Pop Culture Museum for SciFi, fantasy, etc. culture, Lucille Ball is the reason we have to thank for being a sort of advocate of the genre in media. Originally when the pitch was made for Star Trek, most of the CEOs of the studio scoffed at the idea of such a show surviving in the world of television. But Lucy got behind the team, and believed they should allow it to be made into a show. And from that intuition of putting faith in a new generation of entertainment allowed many others to follow. Among the many icons of television (both on and off camera) Lucy and Desi were one of a kind pioneers who pushed both themselves and helped to push others forward against the odds.

Desi was brilliant and was also traumatized by what happened to him and his family in Cuba. The family had been there for generations and that was home. This is something you never get over and I don’t think that he was ever able to deal with it nor could Lucy have comprehended. @last-chance_ Spain is in Europe. I’m sure Lucy’s ancestry is also from Europe. They’re both considered Caucasian. The Cuban people, like the American people, come from diverse racial backgrounds, and sometimes intermarry and are mixed in their race. It’s not clear to me that Desi came from a mixed race parentage. I don’t know if his parents were both purely European or not, but if they were, he’s as white as they come.

I loved those scant few times when Lucy actually DID get into Ricky's club. It really wasn't that there was no place for her there, but oh the comedic turmoil it caused when she did. I think those parts emphasized just what sort of underlying issues they had as a couple, but it still showed how immensely, deeply, passionately, and hopelessly in love they were with each other, no matter what. Carol Channing's quote hit it spot-on. In all honesty, the divorce and remarriages were superficial, as they had both found their soul mates in each other. Life just got in the way.

This is one of your best videos. I Love Lucy is by far my favorite TV show, I still watch it today. I've lost track of how many times I've seen the reruns over the years, and each viewing is as fresh and wonderful as the first time I saw it. They never get old. As you said, the show pioneered so many innovations. The cinematographer, Karl Freund, came from the film industry. It was Desi who wanted the show to be recorded on film as opposed to grainy kinescope, which was the standard for live TV during the 50's. Jackie Gleason was another bright innovator during that time. He also insisted that his show (The Honeymooners) was recorded on film for later broadcast. Back to I Love Lucy: the writing was amazingly clever for the time as well. Madelyn Pugh and Bob Carroll Jr were far ahead of their time. When they wrote Lucy's real life pregnancy into the show, it was another first. This was during the time even the word "pregnant' was disallowed on national TV. I could go on and on about this show because I love it so. I also suggest for I Love Lucy lovers to check out the Amy Pohler directed documentary "Lucy and Desi". It's available to watch on Amazon Prime. It's really, really good and so informative and touching. Thanks so much for your accurate research and a super great video that shined an honest light on Desi Arnaz.

My family moved to So-Cal when I was 6 yrs old. The television industry wasn't that big yet. And we had friends who lived just down the block from Bob Hope & other stars. (I need to start by saying none of these people were "celebrities". These people were REAL stars & had talent like you couldn't believe. Many of them could & would put todays "celebrities" to shame in the looks, attitude & treatment of fans. Just as fans were 95+% respectful of stars when they were out or in a restaurant etc....) I will tell you that there were get togethers where my parents & friends attended & Lucille wanted anyone who would listen, to know that while she may have a talent, her husband, Desi, was the REAL reason to all of their success. She stated that his business sense & innovation of the 3-camera system for filming the show, as well as putting it on film was genius. And his idea for the original 3-camera (or multi-camera) filming is why you could see the actors walk from the kitchen, to the living room & into the bedroom in all one shot filming. Desi Arnaz came up with this idea. He came up with so many innovative ideas that now, seem so simple. Lucille let Desi handle the business end. Back then, who would've ever thought that the handsome & talented singer & actor was more talented in business? The question about favorites..... Well, my favorite I Love Lucy episode is: Hmmm 🤔 ALL OF THEM! How can anyone choose? Every single episode & every episode of the Lucy & Desi Comedy Hour (which were episodes set at their farm in Connecticut). They were great.

Thank you for this wonderful story. I did not know that Lucy and Desi reconciled before his death, and it was so good to hear. I, like all Americans over a certain age, grew up with them. I had assumed that Desi's philandering may have been, partially, a reaction to the fact that he lived in the shadow of a beautiful, powerful and intelligent woman, and that he rebelled by playing around. You make it clear that random sex was another addiction, in addition to alcohol and to the cigarettes, which ultimately killed him.

Unfortunately Desi was an addict: sex, booze, and gambling - before he met Lucy, during their marriage and after the divorce. Yes, his life leaving Cuba during the revolution of 1933 (Batista) he was 16, and had many many opportunities being very wealthy and entitled". Lucy, on the other hand, lost her father before age 4, and lost other relatives that she was close to who lived together - mgm, maternal aunt, mgf in unfortunate accident (where they lost every house etc) and mother went away for weeks, months, even years to earn money with her 2nd husband. They were not reunited til Lucy was at least 10. She left for NYC at age 15, trying to make her way in the world and help support the family, mgf, mother, brother.

Exactly What other woman no matter how voluptuous or beautiful could hold a candle to Lucy? They all look fake and cliché compared to her.

Absolutely beautiful entry. We all love Lucy & Desi. Fave episode was when Desi sang I Love Lucy. Despite everything, they were soulmates.

I definitely “grew up”, watching all of Lucille Ball’s television shows. From the late 50’s, until the mid 70’s. I even ran into Ms. Ball herself, at the original MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas back in 1973, whilst playing Keno, where she kindly called me “kiddo”.
