All Right Now is far from “cheesy”. And lumping Free in with these other one hit wonders is grossly unfair. Free was a rock band from the era of Album Rock. The album All Right Now came from (Fire and Water) charted in the top 20 (US). And they went on to record several more albums and are considered a very influential rock/blues band to this day. Paul Rogers and Paul Kossoff are considered two of the greatest of their respective crafts.

@NYpaddler
@NYpaddler 4 жыл бұрын
I suppose it doesn't really counter the (not really accurate) description of Free as a one hit wonder, but you didn't mention what came after the band broke up. When Free split up Rodger (along with drummer Simon Kirke) went on to form Bad Company, which was hugely successful for the first few years. Their eponymous debut album reached #1 on the US charts and became the 46th best selling album of the 70's. After leaving Bad Company Rodgers formed The Firm with Jimmy Page, then after spending a bunch of time on mostly solo projects he spent a couple of years touring as the singer for Queen. The clown who made this video is obviously far more interested in clicks than in quality or accuracy.
@coasterigh2684
@coasterigh2684 4 жыл бұрын
@@NYpaddler 100% Agreed... however, I would argue that Free was a top notch band, and that they would have been very influential if we'd never heard another peep from them after Free broke up. (as much of a shame as that would have been.) No insult intended - just a joke among friends who appreciate this band - saying Bad Company came out of the remains of Free is kinda like saying Blind Faith came out of Cream, and Wings came out of The Beatles. Paul Rodgers sang with Queen - yeah, David Bowie sang with Bing Crosby, too. (I'm sorry, I am just riffing here. :) ) Free may have been a two hit wonder... Fire and Water... but "by the time they disbanded, they had sold more than 20 million albums and had played more than 700 arena and festival concerts." (wikipedia quote)

@@randallbates9020 The streak isn't a one hit wonder, because Ray Stevens went on to have quite a few more hits, some major, some minor. A one hit wonder refers to an artist who only had a single song or only one song that was a hit. So Ray Stevens was not a one hit wonder, but David Geddes was, as Jun Joey Run was the only one of his that was a hit,. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Geddes_(musician) Clint Holmes is another good example, with one of the most memorable one hit wonders of the 70s, Playground In My Mind. And that was his only song he ever had...

@@randallbates9020 One thing about the Streak I have noticed, is that the song evolved notably over the years. Best version now, I think, is this one... kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqXdoIirbNxgj68 (And I predict this is going to get people binging Ray Stevens videos, which will lead to Tom Lehrer videos, which will lead to Weird Al videos, which will lead to "Where the hell did my weekend go?" ) Mr. Jaws, yeah, we had that on a 45. I think the guy went on to do another similar piece for Who Framed Roger Rabbit. But that never really became popular. I guess in that regard, Whimsical Wil could be considered a one hit wonder. I do still find myself quoting Mr. Jaws occasionally, I must admit

StamfordBridge hmmm, I remember some of these songs described as cheesy back then and not just that Debby Boone thing. I think it had to do with a piece played once too often on the radio. Or, in the case of “The Hustle “ disco got a bad rap even though it had good dance music. “Brandy” was a hit..... on AM radio. All the cool kids were supposed to be listening to FM. Sometimes I think the definition of authentic was getting stoned and listening to 45 minute drum solos then. And I remember a time when Frank Sinatra was considered inauthentic because he didn’t write his own songs or music. But, then again, the same people didn’t think much of Johnny Mercer. I think the poster has a good catch with the cheesy part. These songs don’t seem cheesy to me now . Especially since I liked most when I heard them back then but was told they were too commercial etc.

Christy Stewart It’s the nature of a one-hit wonder that they often tilt toward the novelty song, and can be cheesier. But many of these are not cheesy at all. As for “You Light Up My Life,” it is the very definition of cheese. In fact, the only bullying I ever got in my youth was when my older sister used to hold me down and cornily sing that song to me. Of course I would writhe in agony.

@@armyretired28 Actually I was alive back then. And just because you can name other songs by these bands, does not mean those songs were hits. Again, look it up. We have this wonderful thing called wikipedia and the Billboard Top 40 to check the facts. It isn't a bad thing being a one hit wonder. The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix are all OHW. This will blow your mind: Bob Marley is considered a No Hit Wonder; he never had a single song reach Top 10 on the charts. Great songs, yes. Hits, no. It's just a label and doesn't mean the band or artist sucks.

I met Sharona Alperin in Los Angeles at a conference thirty five years ago. She may not have been 18 anymore but she was still the most beautiful woman in the room. When I was introduced to her she was surprised that I hadn't commented on her name. I told her I was already halfway through the song in my head and she laughed!

Who else is glad they were born in the 50s? Came of age when all these great songs were out, and the 60s and the 70s movement. I can't imagine being born in the 70s or the 80s, would have missed everything the Millennials and Generation X are the know nothing groups. It's depressing as we go on the next Generations know less and less

@@JohnDoeXYZ I had to "cherry-pick" music I liked in the 80s and 90s and so on ... 50s, 60s and 70s music you didn't have to do that with, most of what you heard was good, pop, soul, blues, disco, country and rock ... but only country got much better in the 90s on a larger scale! When I can't find any good music in either of those groups (and btw I don't like rap, hip-hop, techno at all!) I usually go to the 1800s classics and listen to a good Walz or overture ... nothing cheezy there or would y'all consider a Walz cheezy? ;) What upsets me, is, that nobody knows the right dance-steps anymore to make all this music interesting for couples on the dancefloor, that's a great sad loss of culture, my "born58" generation in Europe still went to school for that!! Who of y'all knows how to do a real polka, Walz, quickstep, foxtrot, rumba, samba, tango, TX-twostep and skip-dance? Everybody just bounces off the walls nowadays :(

Each generation "makes their own kind of music" that ticks off the previous generation, who complain that "the kids don't know anything." If that didn't happen, then you should fear for the future of popular music. (I'm looking at The Taliban.)

"Love Hurts" was written and composed by "Boudleaux Bryant". And first recorded by the (Everly Brothers in 1960). I'm not sure? But, 'Love Hurts' may not have been Nazareth's only hit. "Hair of the Dog" was also a top-20 hit on the album charts. And a much better song. And not only did (Van McCoy the Hustle) kick off new dance craze. But it helped to usher the Disco era.
