So many film makers just waste the opportunity to communicate ideas through the screen, but not this guy. I wish he'd make more films.

It seems he often finds it difficult getting the financial support for his films since they usually have underwhelming performances at the box office but they really are masterpieces

One of the best and most original movies ever. Apart from the artistic merit and all things creative he is a brave and rebellious mind.

Wonderful last few minutes. It may not be perfect articulation, but it's a very honest reaction to what it means to grow up with you parent's aesthetics, absorb them, in this case on VHS with dad. but then develop your own sensibilities.

Hi David. I just saw this film now. I found it very Kubrick-esque, with those long lingering shots and symmetrically composed frames, as well as some of the close up camera angles using a wide lens. Not to mention the erie soundtrack and subtle tension throughout. I thought I was watching a Kubrick film. What do you think?

Speaking of interpretations: If anything, Scarlet's character came off like a programmable synthetic, with a synced outer skin; a victim of the actual sentient alien (motorcycle-man) who controlled her, and she comes to realize through experiencing life as those around her whom she now looks like... that not only is she a victimized pawn of her programmers, but that she was in turn victimizing humans whom she related to, more and more. She is the ultimate victim, because there is no escape for her. She can never be understood, nor can she fully understand her situation, ever, since she cannot engage in the human experience (eating, drinking, sex, conversation beyond her programming, etc.)

I thought the same, but there is one scene that breaks it for me. When she takes shelter in the shed in the woods, the way she gets comfortable and lies down to go to sleep didn't seem synthetic to me. It felt alien, but still animalistic. Almost like she was homesick. My interpretation became that emotions run deep within their species' history but they have evolved past them for the most part.
@A1Authority

@@nathanm.6147 She had laid down at the guys house earlier. She is mimicking human actions and recognizes the bed a 'lay down spot'. We also learn she has no vagina and no place for food to process. She has no species. The emotions, if we can call them that, are rudimentary and childlike at best, even in adult situations with the exception of what she has been programmed for. Fear, based on self preservation, is the one she learns best.

@@nathanm.6147 Laying down's just more mimicked behavior discovered at the nice man's house in the 'lay down place'. It's shown 'she' can't process food, cannot converse outside of programming. It has no vagina, not even a she, despite her disguise. It's "Emotions" are rudimentary, child-like at best, even in adult situations. Though programmed to seduce, it's only simulating emotions. She learns fear best, from self preservation. Far less intelligent than say 'Data' from Star Trek, it some times strikes me as an experiment to see how far our own emotions go when witnessing a mere machine that first 'realizes' it's not free, one test of self awareness.
