I have this mic and gig with it a few times a week. It sounds exactly like my archtop guitar only louder. There's no comparison to a pickup. If you visit my page I have several videos using this mic on an archtop acoustic. Obviously you have to be sane about monitoring, it is a mic and can feedback if you are unreasonable with it, but it has about double the gain before feedback compared to an ordinary lavalier mic. I was able to gig it in a club in a band with a drummer, running the mic through a less than ideal acoustasonic amp, and there was plenty of gain to cut with solos. Obviously you can get way more volume before feedback with a pickup, but it won't sound your instrument the way the DPA does. You can also pivot the mic around on the fly like a tone knob to tweak your timbre, adjusting extra lows or highs by pivoting it towards or away from a soundhole or using proximity effect the same way.. It wants full standard 48v phantom power, if you run it on 12v phantom you'll add some hiss, not an unusable amount , but more than I like. I carry a phantom power unit, and a Lizard Leg boost pedal to get more gain when I need it. I couldn't be happier with the DPA 4099g.

Nice demonstration. I have one on order now. Looking forward to it. I love how the guitars resonance and warmth is picked up by adding the mic..

The pickup in Doug's guitar is a Seymour Duncan MagMic.

@SONGSTICKS Yes, any mic will pick up bleed from other instruments, voice, etc. But it's not usually a problem, anymore than having a mic on a stand in front of the guitar. James Taylor has been using one of these, for example, and it doesn't seem to cause a problem with him singing.

Could anybody comment on how well this would pick up string and body percussion? Or direct me to a review of something that does work well in the situation?

Excellent demo and sounds very nice.. but I think $599 is a tad steep !! You could buy a Rare earth pickup for much much less and would sound every bit as good, if not better. I also noticed at one point when you brought the mic in, it picked up your talking voice. I would imagine when singing and in a crowded place you'd get lots of overspill and possibly feedback problems. Great for home recording though. I'd buy one but not at THAT price !!

What about feedback? I'm using a flamenco guitar and don't want to use any pickup system because that always sound bad on nylon strings. Also I play a lot live with loud instruments surrounding me and often for big audiences so the volume got the be fairly loud. Will it work?

Thanks for the great review and guitar playing. I do two different things musically. I sing while accompanying myself on guitar and the other thing I do is improvise musically with multiple instruments including congas, flute, harmonicas and many mini percussion instruments. Would it be easy to remove this mic from the guitar quickly and place it on a mic stand or instrument tray and use it for my other instruments? Any suggestions would be helpful. Buying two of these is beyond what I can afford at this time. Thanks.

Great demo, Doug. What kind of thumb pick do you use? I noticed you are strumming with it. I've been looking for a thumb pick that enable me to do both fingerstyle and strumming, and everything I've tried so far doesn't sound right or work well on the upstrokes.

It would have much more useful to hear the mic on its own first then blended with the pick up - this video isn't much use for hearing what this mic is like

Your reviewing the mic---just use the mic ALONE at least a little. C'mon
