It's also worth noting that the 90D allows shooters to keep their viewfinders even when shooting with external flash or triggers. Also, it has a proper tilt-flip screen for shooting at high/low angles even in portrait orientation. I had passed the M50 for so long because I was hoping that the next M flagship would incorporate the same features, but what we got instead was a glorified M3.
@akareject5 жыл бұрын
I picked up the 90D based on your early review/M6 Mark II comparison video. And I honestly love my 90D! I already have a 5D Mark IV and the 90D compliments it very well. It's lighter and great with the shorter lens. Easy to swap between the two in a pinch. Also, I don't think you can overstate the 120 fps full HD video. That was the selling point for me and it lives up to my expectations. The 120 FPS video in a studio setting has been super clean. I'll be putting it to work in a few weeks during an engagement shoot in NYC. That will be the real test. But so far, I am very happy with my purchase and have found both reviews you have done to be helpful and accurate.
@07wrxtr15 жыл бұрын
How is the image quality vs the 5d IV? I'm debating the 90d vs a cheap 5ds for landscape use only + 16-35 F4. Already have the 80d + 100-400 II which has done fine for wildlife use.
@akareject5 жыл бұрын
@@07wrxtr1 The few shots I've taken with it seem good. Real test is in a couple of weeks at that engagement shoot. I can update you after that. The two big differences I notice right away from the 5D are weight and controls. The 90D is significantly lighter than the 5D which I really appreciate. However, I prefer the dials on the 5D over the 90D. My fat fingers are struggling with back dial the most.
@jerryb.70215 жыл бұрын
@@akareject yes, please let us know how the 90D compares to the 5d Mark IV in low light as far as clarity/noise. And dynamic range in normal conditions. The annoying thing about the megapixels arms race is that I would rather have improved low light/high ISO performance and dynamic range... But increased resolution is what sells to consumers because to them more megapixels = better camera
@operatora5885 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with having more megapixels. If cameras were 20 MP a few years ago. A new 32 MP sensor + improved processor can give the same or even better low light performance in 2019. In my opinion both resolution and low light performance should improve in a balanced way.
@AcidTripwire5 жыл бұрын
@@operatora588 Very true! But you only get so much benefit from increasing resolution - unless you're planning on blowing up photos to huge sizes like billboards, you don't need it (even if you are, big prints like that can have a low DPI). If you're using that higher resolution to make huge crops, especially with APS-C cameras, you're going to run into the physical limitations of the lens, and then there's your shutter speed and hand shake, etc. At that point I would suggest to maybe get a longer lens or move closer lol. If a camera with more megapixels can have the same image quality, I would rather have less megapixels and better image quality instead. But that's just a preference.

I'm a Canon shooter (6D full-frame and M50 mirrorless APSC). I'm always totally underwhelmed by new Canon releases, like everyone. However..... Bleeding-edge features are not what Canons are about. After a while you realise that they just work. They get a job done with the minimum of effort. They are reliable and intuitive to use. That's why so many Pros still use the 5D series cameras, because their livelihood depends on getting the shot. I don't need 4K so my M50, with Viltrox speedbooster suits me fine. As much as I loved the 70D and 80D I think the days of the enthusiast APSC DSLR are coming to an end. The portability of the Mirrorless cameras makes them a dream for the enthusiast. I rarely go walkabout with my 6D now, it's always the M50 I grab (with the superb 22mm f/2)

I’m a traditional (D)SLR enthusiast photographer of a certain age, and for me, this camera is perfect. In fact I’ve just sold a 5DIV + FF L lenses, and a 750D, to concentrate on this. I was finding the 5DIV + L lens just too0 big and heavy to hold for long periods of time. Like Chris my eyesight is going, so I find a VF preferable to using a screen, and the OVF on this camera is very good. I suspect that this might be my ‘last camera’; I can’t think of what else I would want. One last point regarding size & weight, etc. My first good SLR was an original EOS 650 (the film camera) which I bought in 1988, and I used it and a couple of successors for many years. Just for fun I compared the size and weight of the 90D + Sigma 17-70 (my walk-round lens) with an old EOS 600 (630 in N America) + 28-105 lens, and they’re very similar. I feel like I’ve come home with the 90D.

I bought a new 90D in March of 2023. I’ve had extremely good results with it. Very sharp well exposed images. I take issue with your test of a moving subject toward the camera using the OVF. My test with a running dog gave me good results with most (over 85 percent) either tack sharp or very close to it. I was using a Sigma 100-400 lens, 1,500th sec F8 with a 9 focus point cluster. The 90D is very comfortable to use with all the buttons in the right places. The joystick which I thought I might use is actually among my least used features. I almost exclusively use the OVF rather the than the rear screen for composing photos. I use my 90D with the Sigma zoom mostly for wildlife and birds in the Toronto area.

They should have released at least an update to the EF-S 17-55 2.8 together with the 90D (with better resolving power to match the 32.5MPixels, new silent and more video stable ois, nano USM and nearly most important - Better sealing ^^). Would have made a ton of sense as actually there are not really THAT much APS-C lenses good enough to resolve that 32.5 Megapixels - The 35mm 2.8 IS STM in this video is btw. the ONLY one with F2.8 (or faster), optical stabilisation and a silent AF motor for video (without OIS there are only the 24mm F2.8, 30mm F1.4 DC from Sigma and the old APS-C 60mm F2.8 Macro from Canon left - Primes wise). And standard zoom (F2.8 or F4 APS-C - Not Full Frame coverage) there is actually nothing available. Also the M6 II would have benefitted from an upgraded 17-55 2.8 (through the EF to EF-M adapter). With the M system they made the same weird stuff. They released the 32mm F1.4 - Which is great and resolves the new sensor easily (at least what I´ve seen til now). But it comes WITHOUT any stabilisation. Why not go for an F1.8 or F2.0 aperture and include IS instead (would have made A TON of more sense). So useless for video again (but also for longer exposure handheld stills). I don´t really get Canons decisions - They are just weird *g*. LG

This is making me hesitant to buy this camera. I loved the 17-55 on the 80d as that's the best ef-s lens available. But it's ancient and came out when these cameras had a lot less MPs. The L series glass don't have OS which is a no go for me (although I'd check out a used 70-200 is if I found a deal). Canon needs to support the 90d with great new glass.

@@455LT1 Well - The EF-S 17-55 is "ok". But by far not on par anymore with the more modern lenses on the market. Old motor (not compareable to the new USM and nano USM variants), old stabiliser (only optimised for stills) and the really horrific sealing / dust issues - I just skipped on it (according searching an always on lens for my Canon M50). Sadly there is also no alternative on the market (which is also usable for video use). I hate to say it - But in general full frame glass is the only way to go (24-105 F4 Mk-II for example comes with the new USM and new optical stabiliser - Just to name an example). But thats extremely annoying - Especially when searching for a good lens for your EOS M system camera ^^.

@@rroc19 Yep. I had it already on the M50 and the Fuji X-H1 with the Fringer Pro (Mk-1) adapter. Worked nice. But its a super zoom - A huge difference to a constant F2.8 (I would even prefer a constant F4 over a super zoom). Well - The 17-55 2.8 is even bigger and heavier than the 18-135 Nano USM (a little bit) - Which is a challenge with the M50 (due to the small grip). But at least you get the constant F2.8 aperture on the 17-55. Even if they don´t bring out a new 17-55 2.8 variant, I would LOVE to see at least a constant aperture F4 standard zoom variant (like the Fuji 16-80mm F4 for example). Just limit it to 16-70 or even shorter to make it smaller (and cheaper). Would be also great on the 90D as an always on. But I guess this will not happen (I doubt that they will release ANYTHING for the EF-S mount in the near future. More likely for their full frame EF system - As its also working adapted with the new EOS RF bodies.)

I have used EOS 7D (mark I) for many years. It is a solid and reliable camera. I am considering to upgrade it for taking sport photos and star photos. I do know whether I should buy a 90D or M5 (Mark II) or wait for the future 7D Mark III. One reason I don't like mirrorless camera is the LED screen being difficult to view when wearing polarized sunglasses.

You could adapt the M6 II. If you don't know why, you probably should not. If I did, it would be for the 4K video. The extra pixels are nice, but not essential. I believe the sensor in your 77D is the same as the one in my 80D.

Low light performance looks largely similar to the previous sensors however with much higher resolution. Hopefully we will see lab tests on dpreview.com shortly. The uncropped video is slightly softer then the cropped video. Not a huge difference but it's there. No flat profiles at all, looks like your turning everything down on the natural profile to get as close to flat as possible.

Not taking anything away from Chris' or anyone else's skills here - I'd test one for yourself. I have no issues photographing birds in flight with an 80D (from an AF point of view). I'm sure this new camera will handle 10fps as well as the 80D handles 7fps. There's already a review of the 90D by a bird photographer who loved it. If you can nail birds in flight, you'll have no focus issues with just about any other type of action photography.

They test for AF is pretty hard, and they testing for dynamic portrait session mostly. For wildlife its gonna be fine
@youknowwho92475 жыл бұрын
@@dima1353 I can't see a reason why it would be. Tracking a person that moves straight at the camera is much easier on the af system than tracking a small bird that moves not only much faster, but erratically. Same goes for sports shooting. I'll have to look at further reviews, but if the af performance turns out to really look like that it would be a huge step down from my D500 for action and wildlife. I mean, that camera would get every single shot in focus in the test they showed in the video. Like if you did 10 passes of 30 frames each, I guarantee that the D500 would get at least 290 of those 300 frames in perfect focus.
@youknowwho92475 жыл бұрын
@@cooloox I'm not so sure. My point of reference is the D500, so I do have high standards I guess. Looks to me like the focus system they used here is the same as in the 77D. I've used that model - decent, but certainly not great. Guess we'll have to wait, see and try for ourselves.

@@youknowwho9247 Close up "slow" movements is more challenging for AF because it's much more difference for focus field. Plus people is not just flat objects on that distance . Their have fases, and AF system need to recognize and follow faces - not the T-shirt logo. It's required some brains. I don't shoot wildlife, but i know something about shooting sports and dinamyc portraits. And shooting soccer player on the field is nothing compare to child that runs across you. Even if soccer man is much faster - he is isolated and mostly flat object, there is no difference betwen focus on legs and focus on face. It's not require some "algorithms", AI and other stuff. And his fastness is not much so challenging for AF, because on the range its really small field difference. Just look on focus scale.
