DPReview TV: Is Jordan Out Of Touch?

In the most recent DPReview TV episode, Jordan quietly experimented with some filming and editing techniques employed by many-a KZbinr. Were the jump cuts and quirky transitions as jarring to the audience as Jordan thought they might be, or is he just out of touch and behind the times?

Totally agree with Jordan and Chris. They have achieved a level of quality in their productions that doing the "cool" thing is really detrimental to their videos and overall style. Jump cuts are for presenters who can't remember lines or are simply poor speakers. It has become the norm but not necessarily the standard. Keep it up guys and glad you stood your ground. You guys are OG and that's what makes you stand out.

I've always hated the quick jump cuts every 6 seconds. It's just not needed. A cut here or there covered by B-Roll works. But if you can do a clean take it helps.

No to jump cuts. I find them to be the scapegoat for youtubers that don't care to rehearse and fine-tune their craft. Jordan, do what YOU want to do with the channel. I am most fascinated by your drive to achieve the aesthetic that you have done over the life of DPReview. Is shooting doable with higher shutter speeds as an exposure limiter, yes; does it matter that it takes a smidge more time to screw-on/slide-in the ND filter before shooting a scene, I think not. Also, I think the slower shutter speed/ND filter works better for people who don't watch at higher resolutions. I usually watch everything on 360p because I focus on the information instead of the 4k delivery of it.

I like that Chris can get it done in one take without jump cuts or without spending 15 minutes saying something most humans can say in 10 seconds. Please continue making quality content. The little things may not be overtly noticed by everyone but they work together to make the content easier to take in and more enjoyable to watch. It’s like typography. Not many folks notice really good typography... they are too busy easily reading the message.

If there's one thing I've learned over the years in a creative field, it's that the things we obsess over and give ourselves the harshest criticism for, no one else notices. It's a sad reality but once you know this, it's easier to loosen up on some of the rules you box yourself in with. I'll confess that I'm generally more casually "watching" your content - either while editing or in the background of some other household task - so I didn't really notice any differences in the most recent 90D video... Sorry!! Jump cuts do bug me but the rest of it seemed fine watching it back again.

About the jump cuts, I really appreaciate the effort both of you guys are putting on each line of information delivered. Really appreciated and speaks a lot about you guys and the quality of the content you want to show to the world. So it is quite nice you haven't been doing too many jump cuts. If I had to say something about the show format is... stick to the TCSTV formula. I enjoyed the chemistry between you two, and how you were able to deliver information. The transitions were nice, the blogging thing, not so sure... after all, in most videos, we know there is at least another person recording and even interacting with the presenter delivering information (like in that Sony RX10 video where Chris was like far away from Jordan and you guys were yelling at to each other). About video recording speed, I prefer 24p to be honest. EDIT: also please take note of this... do your own End of the Year Special Episode. Last year episode was awkward as hell. End of year show with DPReview team feels like those party with the boss, can be really weird. End of year show just by yourselves are like those evenings enjoying good drinks with your best buddy.

You touch on it in your video - the only thing that truly matters, at the end of the day, is if you are happy with the end result of "the thing" that you've made. Video or otherwise. Short introspective videos like these that explore the dynamic between creating content and being influenced by the reaction to that content are needed in a click-driven world, and it's part of the reason I keep watching your videos. That, and the hot AF joystick action.

It's really cool that you're reflecting on this and asking for feedback. I think you have instilled your dogma rules in me :) Yes, I noticed the jump cuts, the cheesy transitions and the vertical lines of the handrail. I remember one of the comments from an earlier video, when someone asked what software you used to edit with, and you replied Final Cut because it was the best for fast turnarounds. I watched the EOS 90D review and thought wow, they must really want to do fast turnarounds now. I really like watching your videos because your techniques support the narrative so well. One thing that I do find a bit jarring is when I'm watching a clip and the next one moves us to a very different location, even though you're describing a similar category of features.

Coming from a TV background, my basic belief is to do the fundamental well and that is what has made the Camera store TV and now the DP review videos successful. Jump cuts always look horrible but most people won't notice most of the issues, though this doesn't mean they are not important. The most important thing I believe for viewers, on any video is to get the sound right, it it sounds awful or is not synced properly, then you will have issue. The most important thing for you is that you are happy with the final product.

And now on topic: your videos have a level of professionalism very few other KZbin channels can compete with. The episodes feel like a well-done TV show with great presentation from both of you and proper technique. You asked for my opinion, so here it is: stay on track with what you believe to be "the right way" to do it. If something makes your work easier without sacrificing too much, go for it. Change keeps the earth spinning. But keep being yourselves in the way you want to make your work shine. And no jump cuts. The 30p thing is a non issue for me, I grew up watching TV it looks natural to me. But I would not take the comments as a true gauge. You guys have a lot of respect, and when someone to your level does some things that might be questionably, most people won't comment. Plus most people correct things in their head, like a misspelled word, if someone misspells a word your mind can correct it subconsciously. But if you always put out bad work, another channel with better production value will take your audience. I don't think Jordan is out of touch at all.

I would be more inclined to compliment the more recent, deliberate efforts to create more dramas and the fun factors than to criticise the nitty gritty tech related aspect. I think both presenters are outstanding in their departments and are the main reason why we are drawn to these videos than anything else.

Nice video for a change were we get to some behind-the-scene explanation about how you put the episodes together. Didn't notice anything while seeing the 90D video, but obviously now after seeing this video i begin to notice the things Jordan mentions. But wouldn't have otherwise :D

Keep the fun transitions. I honestly didn't even notice the switch to 30fps, but the 90D video was a lot of fun. Cheers guys!

I like the dynamic transitions but I prefer the more cinematic 24p. I noticed the jarring movements right away from higher shutter speeds. Love your videos though either way, you guys do a great job!

Yes, the railings were definitely distracting. But I don't know enough about the video technology to realize it is a shutter speed issue, so didn't comment.

Cars or bikes passing by would be even more annoying. Fast shutter speeds are a disease only topped by vertical shooting on a smartphone.

I did notice the fast shutter speed and was wondering why you needed to do that, but it wasn't really annoying or anything. I was just surprised.

hey :) great experiment! I did not notice the faster shutter speeds but I was only watching it on my phone. transitions looked good, vlogging also. It gave some fresh components (which you don't really need, but nice anyway). Please keep your professional workflow and look to the videos, please let Jordan have its cinematic style! And please avoid the jump cuts. I think this professional look and the great reviews is what you are known for. Video production on a level that is higher than the average KZbinr! Thanks for all your efforts and great videos :)

jump cut are not a big deal, since my interest is on the content. nevertheless, I do prefer to leave that at a very limited amount. the fast shutter dod not bother me. I did not notice until you brought that up. now I can't unsee it. thank you for making me a nerd :P

Please don't just change things because everyone else on youtube is doing it. Part of the reason I like you guys is you feel much more professional and not gimmicky compared to so many other people who are just making it up as they go along and have the excuse of not knowing any better. Honestly with the last episode I thought something was weird but couldn't quite put my finger on it, other than the unusual choice of having Chris 'vlog'. I figured you had been ill or something and with a weekly schedule you had to just push it out.

The important thing is that you don't change your content and the way you present things..just feel free to experiment and test new ways of shooting but as long as the content and the overall point of view that you give us stays the same, you have nothing to worry about! Keep the 24 frames though..hahah

I don't like the jump cuts either. That was the only thing that was a little jarring. I didn't notice the faster shutter speeds as much until you mentioned them. The faster shutter speed has an impact, but it wouldn't ruin your videos for me. I always enjoy watching your content.

I always thought jump cuts were for less skilled speakers who screwed up a lot and needed to skip passed their mistakes. That's one thing I admired about all your videos was that you spoke well and never used them, which was pretty impressive to me. Regardless of whatever you put into these videos I think most of us will watch regardless due to the excellent content you folks at DP review put out.

I love you guys and when I'm listening to your video I mostly concentrate on what the presenter is saying and try to follow and not miss too much information as English is my second language. After watching this video I went and watched the 90D video again ( good trick to get more views 🤣) and could easily notice the transitions and jump cuts. Jump cuts are not my favorite but I understand that sometimes things don't always go as planned and that they can be necessary... Now about the high frame rate, I don't know if there's something wrong with my eyes or my brain but I can hardly notice the difference... I have to concentrate on the image to notice the frame rate differences and loose some of what is being said... maybe it's because I'm not a native English speaker... Sorry Jordan but I can't see the difference between 24p and 30p 😥 Again love you guys, whatever the frame rate you choose to use, please keep up this great mix of information, inspiration and entertainment. ✌

Noooooo with the jump cuts Noooooo with the 30p - you are absolutely right that the trails completely distract in that scene. Did not watch Chris at all at that point! Yeeeeees with the transitions - ok they may be a little cheesy but they are fun and liven the piece up. Yeeeeees to long takes - it is noticeable and appreciated.

Ok. I got one for ya. On KZbin bright lighting is more important than cinematic lighting because we all watch this stuff on small screens. You may want to get like a godox sl60b with a soft box and take it with you when you shoot. Added light is good on this format. 👍

Of the new changes I noticed the jump cuts the most, and actually went back and rewatched a couple of them to make sure I wasn't imaging things or if KZbin was acting up. I just assumed you guys had a long week or were super busy so a couple things slipped between the cracks! I Agree with previous comments in that you could use them to cover mistakes but it also seems like Chris is more comfortable and quite able to deliver long takes without an issue. If you have the talent for it, I say avoid the jump cuts! I live in a PAL country and we use 25/50P as the standard so I honestly have a hard time telling the difference between 24 and 30, that didn't make much of a difference to me. I did notice the high shutter speeds though, those were a bit annoying. I appreciate that you guys are trying new things to keep it fresh, but don't do it at the expense of your own creative vision and keeping yourself happy with the videos.

I liked to esthetic of 24fps and 180 shutter. 30fps and high shutter speed looks negligent if not lazy. I noticed the change but the content was more than plenty entertaining not to be bothered that much by form. So do whatever, don't try to please everyone or anyone in particular. No populism pls. If it makes your work a bit easier, why not.Keep up the awesome work. I want more Jordan in front of the camera.

@jordan: I did notice the jump cuts, but gave no thought to it. I also barely noticed the transitions. Same with the 30 fps. What I DID notice though, were the fast shutter speed and the color, both of which I actively disliked. Thanks for the videos :)

Many KZbinrs are using jump cuts now. It's a fast way to do long content without doing a retake. I wonder if a short fade cut would be less noticeable? Creative B-roll is always an option. Time is money and for many KZbinrs, (especially travel and action sports) retakes are not an option. For me, I'm used to them. As far as the 30fps and higher shutter speed go, you are doing educational videos, not a cinematic movie. Hardly noticed at all. Keep up the great work and come up with some unique DPReview transitions that will set your videos apart.

I didnt mind the 30fps, in fact, i liked it. The shutter speed was evident but not bothering. The cuts and the transitions were sometimes evident, sometimes annoying. But i didnt care, the value of the content and your oppinions were way more important so i just forgave the "youtube style" For the next experiment... 60fps, slow-mo b-roll and on camera shotgun mics. Maybe 10-bit-extreme-color-graded-footage "camera-conspiracies" style.
