Both are fantastic cameras, personally I went for the GH6 mainly because of its video tools and lenses (obviously IQ is way better than before) sure the Fuji has more DR and IQ due to the stacked bigger APSC sensor than the M4/3 non stacked sensor on the GH6 but keep in mind that both cameras deal outstanding results if you know what you’re doing with them. I’ve gotten fantastic results with a GX85 that has 16mp than others with FF cameras (not bragging or anything like that), so my advice to everyone considering either one is: don’t let the “specs” of a camera buy you off, every camera from this “new gen” is fantastic and obviously you’re going to have a good result, just pick the one that makes you happier and comfortable and that’s it, also don’t let negative comments of people who probably haven’t even seen this cameras in person, let alone test them out in multiple escenarios, fool you, they probably don’t know better, so good luck and enjoy ! Great video Jordan 💪🏻

I was killing myself jumping between the two when making my purchase. I have a GH5, BMPCC4K, X-T3, and X-T4. I had the X-T2 and X-H1. I also had a G7, G85, and GH4. So I have a shit ton of lenses for each. But I wanted to try and minimize my gear. I decided that which ever one I went with , the GH6 or X-H2S, I was going to sell my other platform. In the end I chose the Fuji since I do about 60% photography, and for plenty of my photography I need good eye autofocus. I was using an X-T3 and X-T4 combo for some shoots, and then one of those for other shoots where I only needed one camera. This one was tough, because I LOVE my GH5 and really wanted the GH6. But as a photo tool, it made me look elsewhere. So far I’m loving the X-H2S, but I do miss some of the features that are on the GH5 and GH6.

Jordan actually pointed out the same flaws of the XH2S as Kasey did but in less hyperbolic manner. Video AF is good in most parts but can be terrible in others. Slow-mo is just not great. I use a Fuji X-S10 as my work video camera. Previously had an X-T3 - which has more options - but the X-S10 has IBIS and I wanted that and a smaller camera. Anyway - I find the video autofocus on Fuji excellent. I usually use face detection for this. I don't do much grading - quick turnaround is our thing - and I tend to shoot in Classic Chrome. A good hybrid is what I wanted, I shoot video with it for work, but as a hobby I shoot photos and the Fuji is a good allrounder. X-S10 video quality is great for what we need, I shoot in 4K and deliver in 1080p.

Both cameras are technical masterpieces. I have 0 complaints about the XH2S as a video camera since I have it rigged up but Fuji made some questionable decisions in the interface when it comes to photo shooting. The fact that you can’t map iso to the command dials like you could with the XT4 is baffling. You have to press the iso button then either use the rear command dial to navigate the menu or use the joystick/d-pad to choose iso. That makes using the camera slow and cumbersome. I wanna map the iso button to do something useful and control iso directly in a command dial but Fuji decided that my $2500 APSC camera is incapable of doing that. 😂

I also wish they could raise the half-press fps during PreShot ES to way more than 10, as it's what often counts more than framerate after full press.

I understand your concern but in practice I do not see the concern. I have the xt4 and xh2s, I do weddings almost every weekend and never what you are talking about has made me waste time or even annoyed. Then I don't know if I understood what you are saying, but to change the iso, you have to press the iso button, then directly change the iso with the rear wheel...I find it more intuitive because the important settings are done just with the right hand and with 2 fingers (iso, aperture, shutter speed, WB, etc…) whereas with the xt4 you have to use the left hand to change the iso, using 2 fingers to turn the wheel...I always liked what fuji offered with the xt cams, but on my side since then I much prefer how the xh2s works… I don't want to defend the xh2s but honestly it's the most intuitive fuji camera I've used. Even holding it is a treat, I don't even use a cage ...90% handheld with xh2s and 10% gimbal with xt4. Before it was like 60% gimbal, and xt4 with cage or battery grip to hold it well

Thanks so much Jordan. You did a great job overall, very fair, and good points of comparison for pluses and minuses. One area that could possibly make it more clear for the buyers to choose is which camera's weaker points can be compensated based on the strategies of the shoot. For instant a short coming in the area of auto focus, low light performance, less noise in the image, overall image quality, or the film look: can it be compensated by additional equipment? How about if IBS is wonky? would adding gimbal take care of that weakness? How about battery life, is there external power source, battery grip, etc. take care of that weakness? .... etc. I think videographers know that at some point they need to buy additional accessories, faster lenses, etc. as long as the body is worthy to spend money on those accessories to make it a better package, but they will regret if they know no matter how much money they spend in additional equipment, there are some limitations on that body that cannot be compensated. Based on this, which one of these cameras have more potentials?

I know this is not a popular point of view, but the XLR doesn't really matter as much as the internal, uninsulated ribbons that carry the sound. Jarring that my little Canon and Sony compacts have it, but not the purpose-built Fuji video camera. Fingers crossed that they’ll add it in a firmware update at some point; not sure how likely that is though. The 240p quality is also kind of baffling. Nasty artifacts that seem to be independent of ISO and compression setting. Not yet convinced there isn’t a bug lurking there somewhere (especially given that the X-T4 looked better). Awesome video, thank you! By the time the X-T5 is out with most (if not just about all) of all of the X-H2S' features in a smaller, lighter and cheaper package and plus with improvements and fixes, that will be the better camera. And if some time later an X-S10II/X-S20 comes out with again most of the X-T5's features and added improvements, even lighter and again cheaper, that will be for me the camera to get. So I'll revisit all this a year or two from now. I feel the X-H2S is in many ways an overpriced beta testing camera for Fujifilm and is several firmware updates away from the price it commands and the true potential it aims for. And all this without even mentioning the general X-mount issue of subpar lens ecosystem compared to the likes of others like Sony for example, which is a problem that will either way have a very difficult resolution any time soon. Either way the X-H2S is no doubts a great camera and proves that Fujifilm knows very well what they are doing.. but this comes at a cost that already enters competing FF hardware, that needs maturing, to be squeezed in size and shrunk in price and get thoroughly polished out.

If the rumors are true, the X-T5 won’t be getting the same sensor as the X-H2S (it will instead get the non-stacked 40MP sensor from the upcoming X-H2). Which does raise the question of what other Fuji cameras will actually be getting this sensor. X-S10 successor sounds plausible (since it is like a little brother to the X-H2S in some ways), but I’m guessing they won’t release it for a couple of years in order to avoid cannibalizing sales.

I’ve been shooting on the XH2S over the past year and have used it for client work and short films. It’s a great workhorse, but when it comes to the image, there’s something about it that bothers me. I know the image is sampled from 6k and that there is no OLPF, but there’s something about the image that looks very “digital”. I can’t explain it, but there is a flat look and I don’t like the way that it renders skin. I do love the colours and DR, but I feel like something is off. Obviously, you can use filters and soften the image in post, but I feel like the edges have a bit of halo effect going on. I assume it’s from heavy in-camera processing and cannot be turned off, even if sharpness is set to -4. I’m currently going to sell my XH2S and go back to using the bmpcc 4k with a speedbooster. Whilst the pocket 4k has inferior specs on paper, I still prefer the organic and filmic look it gives. I think there’s more to the story than just pure specs.

I understand that you and Chris are a team and so wouldn't mind having separate videos for photo and video capabilities, especially of the models with which you've had more experience in handling than just the initial product launch review. Things like interbrand lens usage/performance looks good on paper on m4/3, but in practice Olympus and Panasonic lenses are not as co-operative on each others bodies - stuff that marketing info does not advertise when showcasing a product, but an avid user like yourself would pickup on when working with the camera.

Is fuji ever going to fix the jerky stabilization for panning shots in video, this seems to be a major detractor from my viewpoint. Love their cameras though, but if I am panning on a subject that is moving it is pretty disappointing to see the camera jerk and shudder when it should be smooth.

Great video Jordan. Seems both are great, and I think for me I’d go for the gh6 if I wanted mostly a video camera, and the fuji if it was my do all camera. The video kinda necitates the need for a “what are the best fuji video lenses” video. Bit of a minefield.

You forgot about audio. Panasonic wins that category so call it a tie. Also the Panasonic/Leica f/1.7 zoom lenses are without equal in ANY format and ONLY work with m4/3. Another point for Panasonic.

We’ve had quite a few Fujifilm cameras over the past decade here in our studio. Both X and GFX. Though I love their handling and primes for stills, I must say that we’ve had more reliability issues with Fuji than with any other camera brand. As for video, none of the Fuji XF and GF lenses are great for video, except perhaps their upcoming 18-120. With Panasonic however, their Leica Vario-Summilux 10-25 and 25-50 f1.7 as well as their Vario-Elmarit 50-200 are superb and generally all you’ll ever need. Combine that with Panasonics legendary build quality and there’s my clear preference…

Except you are talking about the previous Fujifilm cameras and somewhat ambiguous reliability issues, that may have been fixed long ago. Fujifilm has an also equally legendary build quality. It is more of a personal preference which I respect, but downgrading something based on personal preference, and generalizing based on it that Fuji products in general are bad (while saying Panasonic are great). Based on the review, the XH2S has merits that people would choose over the GH6. Just wanted to react, as the reliability issues that you mentioned have put the new camera in a bad light, as if the better quality of the camera being reviewed would be overlooked.

@@razznote7586 In my view I’ve made it very clear that these are personal experiences and a personal preference. I’m not saying that Fuji cameras are generally bad, just that we had more reliability issues than with other brands we use. Just for this case I digged into my memory. Between 2012 and 2021 we’ve had a total of 13 Fuji cameras (8 X-series and 5 GFX) and 19 lenses (13 XF and 6 GF). Between 2015 and 2020 we’ve also used them professionally for our fashion and beauty photography work. Of the 13 cameras, 5 were either replaced or in need of repair shortly after purchase. All under warranty and due to construction failures. Of the 19 lenses, 7 needed replacement or repair. A few right out of the box and some after short usage. We’re using Hasselblad, Canon (until 2016) Nikon, Panasonic and Leica (mostly personal) and we’ve never seen such a high repair %. On one occassion I even had to redo a half day shoot. It’s not just with older Fuji cameras. In fact, most issues were probably caused by failing quality assurance and most issues came with the bodies manufatured in China and lenses made in the Philipines. So basically after 2017. We’ve had less issues with GFX and GF products (all made in Japan) and my personal X-Pro2 (also made in Japan). Now, I know that many owners enjoy their Fuji cameras, but I personally have become hesitant for professional use.

X-mount has some really nice Sigma primes and Tamron came out with a good zoom option, but other than that its really dry lake for lightweight and modern lenses, I feel Fuji is stuck in the past when it comes to updating their lenses which are BADLY needed. Very few systems still match the Samsung 16-50mm F2-2.8 which was not only weather resistant, it also was made for video and photo and had OIS built into it, a lens like that needs to be looked at by others and copied because it was a beast for what it did.

Great comparison. For me I like the look of the GH6 video more but the Fuji looks sharper to me which I like. I would have liked to see more and longer clips that show the different features you mentioned rather than a just quick shot. This would be more helpful for comparisons. 10:28 Sure the X-H2S battery lasts a lot longer than the Panasonic internal battery, but what you didn't mention and should have, is that you can use USB-C batteries with the GH6 and If you do that you could potentially use it for as long as you need to and not run out of battery life. Also if you are not shooting in the full 5.7 or 5.8K or external RAW on the GH6, you can use the Pixel to Pixel mode for a longer crop if you need it which can be useful.

I love Fuji but I would’ve gave Panasonic the win on 4K120 you’re using you’re whole sensors and yes the crop factor for it basically levels the playing field in this category. my thinking is if you’re using mft then you’re already compensating for you’re lens range. So you’re use to your crop already but the Fuji crops in o top of the apsc crop so you’re having to compensate twice. Also the file size is probably smaller Olin the gh5 I’d imagine. I’m a fuji fanboy but I think Panasonic should win that. I feel we need to be objective and critical with these manufacturers. They need to gauge what we need in these products.

no, I shot side by side with my G9 when I got it. Other than a resolution bump there isn't much difference between the two. 100% shadow boost in LR of under exposed areas the noise is identical at 100% magnification at base ISO and DR is close enough to not care. People also seem to be ignoring that the GH6 also offers hand held high res mode, which works very well for static subjects and increases DR according to photons to photos. It IS missing some of the newer photography features that the G9 and OM1 have (6k photo/focus stacking/post focus/etc).

This was a clearly level-headed video with some excellent insights. One benefit of the Panasonic system that Jordan did not mention is that its lenses are generally less expensive than the aps-c lenses on the Fuji. If you're starting a video system from scratch and have a limited budget, this could be an important factor. Also, I suspect the better image quality and dynamic range of the Fuji camera is evident only in extreme situations. That is, in extremely dark scenes or scenes with extreme contrast.

Don't forget both m43 and Fuji XF have some great third party lenses from Sigma and (for the Fuji) Viltrox. Although I'm very curious to see how either of the GH6 and X-H2S stack up against the Blackmagic PCC 6Ks, if we're talking solely about video quality.
