Have to say, the colors and the video quality coming out of that Olympus E-M1X were fantastic. All kudos to the lovely cinematography of the talented Mr. Jordan Drake! While low light showed the limits of that older M43 sensor a bit, and bright backlighting (the ship) revealed the limits of it’s dynamic range, everything was overall quite natural and beautiful. Oh, and the new Leica was pretty alright, too.

True, true! But man that USB-C port, you set this camera down once on the counter and there is a drop of water, you'll have a really pretty $9,000 paperweight! Plenty of people have accidentally fried and completely ruined their Nikon D810, D850 or Canon 5D Mark IV type camera's from getting water, even small amounts of water into the port for the vertical grip. Which is why those camera's have a rubber piece that covers the port. Yet people forget about the little rubber piece that covers the port and they ruin their camera's. Leica just does not even include a rubber piece to cover the port? That's a recipe for disaster!
@patricksmith25532 жыл бұрын
@THΞ ΛΧΥΞΗΗΘ Just because you can’t afford it does not means others don’t buy it. Being overpriced does not apply to people who buy these types of cameras. I could easily buy two of these, but I prefer to have more practical cameras like my Nikon D6, D5 and D850 cameras. I prefer my 500mm f/4E VR FL and 300mm f/2.8G VRII lenses to say a Leica APO lens. But just because you think it’s over priced does not mean other people do. $9,000 is not a lot of money to some people. Especially with credit cards. If you make $20,000 a month, you could easily afford this by paying it off over 6 months. Plus interest rates are very low. However most people who can afford this type of camera will just buy it outright. You’re not considering used values. This camera in reality only cost about $2,000-$2,500 as you can resell it for about 70% of what you paid for it, after a year or two. Anyways these types of buyers can easily afford it. I’m far from wealthy and I have gear worth way more than this camera. If you save your money and upgrade when you can, you can too have all of the gear someday. I only got back into photography a few years ago. Started with a $1,300 camera setup and now have an entire dream camera kit. It’s possible!

Someone can ask for a cropping mode which imitates longer focal lengths like the Q2 but in this camera what the hell we need 60MP for? Make it 36MP and most owners will be happy with one stop or so more dynamic range which is far more important when shooting in uncontrollable light conditions and save file space in camera, in your smartphone and at home on your hard drive. *scratch my head*

Thanks for this first look and for the great video from New York, including the stills and the music. There’s a reason I, like so many, go to your and Chris’s videos first when there is a major new camera release. I’ve used Leica film and digital M bodies for decades and currently have the M10M alongside my SL2 kit. I love the rangefinder design and the classic, dense feeling of the wonderful construction. It’s a step away from tradition, of course, but it made sense to finally omit the base plate. The aluminum top plate on the black version is in keeping with their other bodies, although the resulting change in weight would present a serious choice between silver and black, since many users are inured to that classic “brick” feeling as well as the eventual brassing. I think the M series will and should always remain without IBIS but that brings up a sad fact that many long time users are getting older and do not obtain the same sharpness due to focus or stability. Thus the SL, Q, and other series. I look forward to your in-depth review!

One correction for DPR / TV (somewhat incorrectly stated on both). The M 240 had metering off the sensor as well which gave the same options using the live view for metering. But you had the option in that camera of doing classic Leica shutter metering and sensor metering. So it’s not ‘new’ for M11. Though from memory they did remove that function in the M10. So it’s the ‘return’ of that feature.

Plus more function buttons is great like you said for ISO adjustment, the new back layout is nicer looking and I guess the higher res too (I dont care about that personally). Unless I were intending to make huge prints for close up viewing or routinely crop images as an alternative to longer focal length lenses , I have no need for a 60mp camera costing 9K with a several desirable upgrades, but none that will significantly improve my image making with the M10 and a variety of focal length lenses of excellent quality. I will, however, take my hat off to Leica for continuing elegant RF camera design with improved features. Perhaps software upgrades will reduce camera "on" lag time.

Good video, thanks. My own lenses for my Ms are the 35/2 ASPH (not apo), the 90 APO, and the 50/2 Summicron (pre APO). These aren't the latest and greatest but still pretty good on my M10, 9, and 8). Yet, it seems like every time an M comes out (8, 9, 246, 10, and now 11) the reviewers always say ... oh the digital M8 won't look perfect with Leica lenses that came out prior to their first digital, or the new camera won't get maximum advantage out of the sensor (18MP, 24MP, 24MP, 40MP, or now 60MP) with less than the absolute latest lenses. Maybe that is true, but as you say we mostly take them handheld so you'll probably never prove it without very careful tripod testing. Course by the same token, how useful is 60MP for a handheld camera? Not sure I'll buy an 11 and if I do I typically buy the camera after the 11P or 11R gets made so the price takes at least a tiny hit. And after the M9 sensor corrosion debacle, I'm more reluctant than I used to to buy $8000 cameras that may not be warrantied by Leica against major design defects.

Agree with you on high pixel count trade-off with sharpness in handheld/no flash situations - which is the typical situation for most rangefinder users. Seems the pixel war is alive and well. I'll stick to my personal sweet spot of 24 MP, thank you. And as I stated elsewhere, I do wish Leica put out a digital M camera with the absolute minimum tech required to make a picture - aperture, shutter speed, and iso - and that produced high quality files that allowed for all the post production you *might* want to put the files through.

Have you considered an M10-D? It’s not exactly what you’re looking for, but it’s close in spirit.

@@spyhardman Thanks for responding. Yes, I have in fact considered the M10-D ... and the M-D before it (M10-D's earlier iteration). Just never made the leap with any Leica digital camera. But you are right, it's the closest thing to a bare bones digital camera on the market ... esp. the M-D with the ISO dial on the back (no exposure compensation dial). My M6 with a classic (1960s) 35mm f/1.4 is my only experience with Leica to date. Might bite the bullet yet! (I now digitally shoot with a Nikon D200, D3, D3X, and D810 . . . absolutely LOVE the D3X).

Leica, yeah, SUPER nice camera, great images and color BUT BUT BUT BUT MY eye was caught by the quality of the video in this episode!!! It was nothing short of beautiful!! And then to see it was shot with an Olympus EM1X!!! I may have to rethink my next camera purchase....What does Jordan think of this camera after using it on this trip?

I'm happy with a X100V for 10 times less than that combo.

I'm sure it's a fine camera but the price simply isn't practical. So, yeah. I'm going to use my 100V instead and save lots of money and still get outstanding images.

The GR3x is even cheaper if you don’t shoot video.

Ditto. Leica is for bad photographers with too much money.

Great review AS ALWAYS. The only channel I take seriously ;) to me as an M10-r owner the only real difference is the battery life really. When i put visoflex on it sucks the battery big time.
