A very interesting presentation by Prof Simon. The question that needs to be addressed is why does America remain committed to such a profligate lifestyle when the core problem is not climate change but ecological overshoot. The Planetary Boundaries research by earth system scientists illustrates that the carbon cycle is not the only problem. The earth overshoot day for the U.S. occurs in March. That is, you are consuming more than 4 planet’s worth of non renewable resources per year. Surely, if you are really serious, you won’t simply want to electrify the Titanic. You have already hit five icebergs (read planetary boundaries) and all you will do is ensure that you end up destroying the planet to maintain a greedy, self-centred lifestyle. Why don’t Americans see that or does American exceptionalism blind you to these hard truths.
