@@eq1373 correct, during it's heyday the series was the most expensive too produce. Most shows of the time like Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century used stock footage in their battles. With the hulk, the special effects and the makeups used on Bixby and Ferrigno were costly. So they would usually go overbudget, it hurt them alot because they couldn't afford big name stars like Carry Grant, Elizabeth Montgomery, both big fans of the show. I could of seen Montgomery as Elaina Marks in the pilot. Or as Doctor Caroline Fields in the 2 hour, second season premiere, Married. Both she and Bixby were on the same game shows of the 70s. So they had great chemistry together.

I was born in 2002 so I was around 6 when I first watched the pilot, and my god I couldn’t sleep for a week the Hulks growling terrified me as a kid to the point I’d hide under my covers and refused to leave my room until my parents turned it off. About 10 years later I watched it again and I was absolutely obsessed with it I binged all 5 seasons and to this day I still think this is by bar the best Hulk ever put to screen. Something about the Avengers hulk seems to supernatural and otherworldly but Lou’s hulk seemed more human and down to earth but still incredibly powerful and scary when he was on screen.

If you were to see the scene after this one where he encounters the little girl at the lake, it's literally taken from the 1931 Frankenstein movie (both were distributed by Universal, so this was not a coincidence). However, in that movie, the monster actually throws the little girl into the lake. In this scenario, the little girl is frightened of the Hulk, tries to row away from him but panics and falls into the lake. The Hulk tries to save her by pushing a huge tree into the lake. By the way, in one shot that has the Hulk looking up the tree, the overhead shot of the Hulk is actually Richard Kiel, the original actor who was supposed to play the character. So, even in this very early encounter, the Hulk is already showing the side of his compassion and concern, especially when it comes to little children.

Banner and Dr Marks we're interviewing people who had experienced unexplained phenomena of excessive strength during times of stress. Banner later learned that with each of these incidents, there was high levels of gamma radiation present. However, on the day of the car accident with his wife, there was low gamma activity. This is what led to his experimenting on himself by taking a gamma injection. When he went into the gamma lab, his original intent was to only take an injection of 300,000 units. But the machine wasn't calibrated properly, and he ended up taking an injection of 2 million units. It was this overdose that led to his metamorphosis

So I Decided to play a trick on him. I bought the Incredible Hulk DVD collection, and a set of white contacts. One day he came in the room, and I was watching the hulk. After watching for awhile, he goes " That couldn't really happen, could it"? I say " Does radiation exist? Then it can happen". That night, we go to bed, and sure enough, he looks down to see if I'm awake. I tried to make it seem like I was dreaming, then opened my eyes with the white contacts in, looking right at him.I have never seen my brother run so fast in my life! PS: Yes, I got in trouble. Yes, it was worth it.

Here in the UK this was the first ever instance myself and my mates knew of the Hulk back in the 70's. I remember the older lads talking about watching a new TV show where this man smashes through a wall. Lo and behold we were introduced to the Hulk!!!. This TV version always stayed with me especially the music for the closing credits.

Bill Bixby did an amazing job portraying David Bruce Banner for 5 seasons. I was afraid of the hulk Lou Ferrigno played for so long. Had nightmares of him chasing me. Until I saw the episode where Lou met the hulk on stage where Lou portrayed a bodybuilder. It gave me the psychological strength to take my greatest fear of being beaten by bullies and turn the hulk into a source of strength. To work out my muscles so that I wouldn't ever fear bullies ever again and defend myself. I have an autographed photo of Bill putting in the contacts for tbe first time with Producer Kevin Johnson. Kevin mailed it to me for being the only one to respond to his comme tary on the DVD episode season opened Prometheus asking for a copy of the mad magazine skit they did of their show the incredible hulk. I found scans of it online a decade or so prior. I was so happy to make contact and to help someone who had entertained me for so many years from being 8 years into my twenties. I farmed the autographed photo and hunt it on my wall.

I remember that episode. And the fact that he was actually scared to the point of panic. Remember it's extreme emotions that trigger the transformation. Whether it be anger or fear or extreme sadness. There was a time where he went up against another guy who was an evil version of the hulk. And he had the antidote to his cure. And he destroyed it so that way nobody can get it including Dr banner. David was filled with extreme rage and sadness at the same time because he felt his only hope was gone and that's when he transformed and battled that evil version of the hulk. Look it up sometime.

He was angry...but he needed the emotional commitment (attempting and failing to change the tire) in order to change into the Hulk (remember the people David and Elaina studied? Each of them demonstrated untapped strength - aided by gamma ray sunspots - as a result of getting extremely angry over the possibility of failing the task at hand - saving a boy from a burning car, knocking down a thick door, carrying a wounded soldier to a place of safety despite nursing an injury/injuries).

He is a kind and soft spoken individual. I have run into him at Comic-cons and it was so great when he remembered me. This and the Spiderman show thrilled me in my youth. Bixby refused to do the show if it couldn’t be done as realistically as possible. He fought very very hard to make the show as adult oriented because he knew that if they captured the children and the adults they’d strike gold. He also wanted to legitimize television and comic books and he couldn’t do that if they went cheap or corny on the hulk.

Unlike later adaptations, in this version of Bixby and Ferrigno, here David (or Bruce) is responsible for what happened, namely, it is not a laboratory accident or an explosion, but everything is caused by his desperation to find an answer to his research and he did not even bother to know why there was a white mark.

This pilot alone set the tone and bar for the character of Dr. David Banner. What's impressive is that the episode is not just about the origin of the Incredible Hulk but a real emotional human drama about a man who is in conflict with himself, who had everything and lost everything. Making it grounded in reality. Also, the whole suspense to this sequence feels less like a superhero movie and more like supernatural horror film.
