The Enneagram provides nine consistent, fairly predictable ways for us to understand and tell our narrative of how we operate in the world and make sense of our lives. It’s a tool that helps us enter into a conversation about the recurring themes and patterns of behaviors that are self-defeating or hurtful to others. One theme that operates as a thread in each of our lives is shame. Next to love, I believe shame is the most powerful force in the universe, but in the wrong direction.
In today’s profoundly moving, heart-changing episode, author and psychiatrist Dr. Curt Thompson joins me for a deep conversation about shame and how it plays out as a human experience for all nine types.
In this episode you’ll learn:
1. What shame does as opposed to what it is
2. How shame manifests in each Enneagram type
3. How we can begin to heal shame through community

Thank you for this beautiful conversation as a 4w5 it was thrilling to watch Curt cry as he tells the story of redemption love and ultimate truth… if I had a dollar for every time I have been asked why I cry when I share a universal truth … well, I would send it all to Curt for affirming that I am not alone in seeing the exquisite beauty of human truth. Thank you ❤️

“Somebody knows where I am and they aren’t coming”. When I first started 12 step work, I wanted to run when I shared vulnerably. I didn’t. I kept showing up, sharing more and more deeply and receiving God’s grace from others, which has transformed my healing process and life. I am still showing up, still being real, hopefully to my dying breath. Thanks for the video. Sharing our stories of shame and heartache is transformative

Oh man, as a one-to-one 4, I had the EXACT thing happen that you describe: Got in an ugly fight with the BF. Got nasty. He got nasty. Got cruel - went for the low punch and drove it home. He knew it would hurt me to leave. He saw the ugliest side of me. Left. Physically left me on a dock and drove away with the boat. The next 2 hours were an out of body experience. I've never felt like that. Like I was falling over the abyss. Left because I was seen for who I really was. I don't even have words for the shame, humiliation and lack of self-worth/intrinsic value I felt then.

This podcast is so profound on so many levels. I’ve listened to this podcast in its entirety (May 29th) with my husband as we drove home from celebrating our 37th anniversary in a tree house. Your description of an 8 married to a 9 was spot on. I’m the 8 and my husband is a 9. I re-listening to the end of the podcast again on June 1st. and took notes on it and today I re-listened to this podcast again and took more notes. The only thing that I’d say is that the description that Dr. Curt gives in the beginning of the podcast of shame and the examples that Ian gave for each type didn’t seem to line up. I mean it seems like at best those descriptions might cause a feeling of regret but not shame. However I could be projecting my 8 onto the description of others which means I could be totally off base too. Thank you for all you do to expand the kingdom of God in the lives of so many people through the lens of the enneagram. I’m a life that’s been changed. I’ve listened to every one of your podcast some multiple times.

He said he's a 4, he knows his deep motivations better and has lived with himself enough to know what type he is. I think that's what I stick with, not retyping him 🙏🏿

It strikes me that u guys reinforce the idea that i am responsible for someone elses feelings, which is UNTRUE. I wish u were clearly saying that healthy people are responsible for meeting their Own Needs and handling their Own Feelings.
