Does not drink. Never drank, never did drugs or sleep around and married to the same lady for 48 years. Also, if you notice, he never uses curse words. No F - bombs at all. I can't help but think Dr D is one heck of a classy gentleman. Hats off to you sir. Going to order your book when I'm done listening to this interview. Great job as always Hannibal 👏

Dr. D had a really similar experience in the Army as my dad, probably around the same time. My dad got drafted in 72' but got really lucky because he ended up working first at an ammo dump, then as a jeep driver/mail carrier in Heidelberg, Germany. Pretty rare for a couple poor kids from backwoods towns to not end up on the front lines. They both got extremely lucky.

Schultz was 6'6" or 6'7" wasn't he? Would that not make him physically unfit for infantry since he would be too big of a target to be shot at by the NVA/VC ?

Dr. D was the ONE wrestler I watched in my youth that scared me...in other words his "gimmick" (it wasn't far from the truth!) came across as "real". A legit badass you'd never want to face. Plus, being a Georgian and him from Tennessee, I knew those Southern mannerisms and knew that he really meant business. IMO Vince screwed the fans of the world so, so, many times. What he did to Doc....ending the territories...no more kayfabe (not that ppl believed wrestling to be 💯 legit, but then again when you buy a movie ticket...nobody reminds you "this is totally fake" right when yu walked in. Yu want to get lost in the moment) And look where wrestling is today...dead. Congrats Vince! You bought em all and burned it all down and destroyed the business.
@SicSemperTyrannis74
@SicSemperTyrannis74 Жыл бұрын
@andrion waser I agree 100%. I grew up watching GCW (later WCW), ACW, UCW, Smoky Mtns, Mid-Atlantic, Stampede, all the NWA umbrella territories, WCCW in Texas w the Von Erichs, basically ANYTHING but WWE(F at the time) bc it was just too comical...I mean when you're talking about something in Pro Wrestling being "comical" you know it's over the top lol! Great example you gave with Andre. It was the circus like environment plus his expansion...either buying the territories or forcing them into bankruptcy that made me really dislike Vince. He's a brilliant businessman, but terrible at his eye for the long game. After that year WCW beat them in the rankings he went full out "Jerry Springer" mode. It was just horrible, especially for an old school fan like me even though I did like Stone Cold and The Rock in their prime. I knew from a very early age it wasn't "real", but when Vince broke kayfabe just to get out of some taxes, I really couldn't believe it. I love watching these old videos now of a time long passed. I grew up in a city of about 150K called Macon GA and WCW would do a TV taping there about once a month. Those were great times. I'm 49 now...when I was about 15 we got kicked out bc someone in our group threw a drink at Dennis Condrey of the Midnight Express when we saw him peeking from behind the curtain watching a match and it just exploded on his forehead 😆. I guess watching these take me back to my youth, and I really appreciate what all those guys did to entertain us, all the bumps, all the shoots, all the promos (shout out to the Nature Boy), EVERYTHING. It was something laughed at by most but I didn't care. There's wrestlers from WWE I admire...especially Foley and Taker. Speaking of them, that bump Foley took (twice!) and when Cornette dropped from the ladder and tore both knees up are probably the best I've seen. I appreciate every guy that got in the ring n gave their bodies (and lives) up for our amusement. Thanks so much and sorry for being so long winded...I could talk wrestling for days! (BTW you saying Stone Cold reminded you of Dr. D...exactly. Almost the same gimmick but Stone Cold added more to it...it's hard to look at Steve Austin in the bleach blonde years and think that's the same guy. GREAT, GREAT guy all around and I think most are. There are some A-holes but they're generally nice, good dudes out of the ring. I've met many and Steve is close to the top. Nobody is cooler than Foley lol. That dude will crack you up laughing. I can't believe the abuse he took over the years) Really sorry for writing so much...and here I am blasting WWF and my favorite wrestler back then was Dr. D...I think Vince Sr. might have hired him...not sure. It definitely got way worse under Jr...
