I drove by Dan's old office today and started wondering how he was doing. It was both heartbreaking and inspiring to watch these final videos. I actually went to see him last year for leg pain. I had no idea he was sick. I was telling him how my own health declined after I lost my brother to cancer. That's when he shared with me his story. It was so difficult to imagine the Dan I played volleyball with so many years ago, one of the healthiest people I knew, fighting this battle. Sending all my love to Dan's family & friends, as I understand how devastating this loss is to you and the world he touched.

Thank you for taking the time to update us, John. So lovely to "meet" you. What an amazing job your parents have done in raising such wonderful humans. My Love and thanks to them for their precious gifts to this world. All the love that Dan and your family are receiving is a reflection of all the goodness Dan gave to so many people around the world. There is no debt to repay. The love here is freely given in genuine appreciation and fondness for the beautiful human being of your brother, Dan. His legacy shall live on as I shall re-watch his videos for years to come. I hope he knows that he has made a real, positive difference to the world. My Love and thoughts are with you all. Xxx

@TriTr-gk8bo That is such a normal response - our mind set is to “fix” a problem. It was one of the most difficult concepts for me when I began Hospice care. Patients bodies guide them in this process. It’s ok not to eat or drink when their bodies are shutting down, in fact, it’s necessary. I am very sorry for your loss.

I was with my granny in hospice in her last days of life. She appeared to be so thirsty. She wasn't talking to us. She mumbled at times but was jibberish. But I was so hurt by her thirst and talked with a nurse about it. She said my granny wasn't thirsty and I could do nothing but cry. After a couple hours, the nurse came in with a thick purple liquid and a dropper like syringe and told me to be very careful and give her only a tiny bit as not to choke her. My granny liked it. That night, she passed. I asked the nurse if that purple liquid did her in sooner and the sweet little nurse said I gave that for you to be comfortable. Hospice nurses not only look after the dying, but the family as well. I'll never forget that womans face. She really was an angel for our whole family.

Brother Brockmann mentioned Dr. Dan looking upward. My mom did that too a couple days before she passed. And she kept reaching out (seemingly toward something) with her arm(s). I don’t know what kind of biological phenomenon that could be but, I’d like to think that it was someone she loved and who loved her coming to pick her up. She also kept repeating “papa” in our native language, my brother and I initially thought she was referring to our father/her husband, but she still called out even in his presence and reached toward something above her, wide eyed. So maybe… hopefully.. it was my late grandpops welcoming his beloved little girl.🥲 What do y’all think? Anyone else seen something similar?

Having lost my older sister to stage 4 breast cancer in January 2022. She was gone in only 10 months. I went to see her in home palliative care the day before she died, and she could hear me as she answered even though she was not coherant. It is unbelievably painful so your family have my full empathy. My sister had developed leptomaginal mass( brain cancer) and on heavy painkillers. The emptiness is always constant, but the memories never die. May God guide him on his final journey. 🇨🇦😢
@shopz32354 ай бұрын
Ouch. My mother (60) just passed away this February from breast cancer that spread to the leptomeninges as well. It’s a devastating course of illness isn’t it? I’m not sure if you got to see much of it.. but I was by my mom’s side in 8-12 hr shifts for a month. I felt like I was watching a loved one being tortured.. The pain, fear and stress of those memories are so visceral and intense to me, many times I feel like I am in physical pain, like I can’t breathe and my body, my eyes forget how to move for a bit. And then the guilt of the realization that whatever emotional, physical or psychological pain I feel, must have been a billion times worse for the person who actually suffered through this illness. So ouch. Because there are no words. This kind of death is so evil and ugly. It tore me to pieces and I wonder if I’ll ever feel whole again.

@shopz3235 Thanks for sharing on a trip to Kauai in February 2021. My sister started acting strange, and my niece said that she must see a doctor upon return to Canada. Her hearing went that March in her left ear, and multiple tests revealed multiple inflammations but no diagnosis. Finally, after a hospital stay in neurology because of seizures, a stage four advanced brest cancer, it took 4 months for a final diagnosis. Then, aggressive chemo, 5 rounds, but by December, she was not cognitively well enough for further chemo, and a palliative home care referral was made. Her personality changed from an extroverted go-getter to an extremely anxious sister. It was very hard to observe as the sister I knew was no longer. It is truly heartbreaking, and I empathize with palliative care givers they are amazing. I never in a million years would have thought my sister would go this way, unbelievably diminished. Thank you John for having this conversation with the Dr. Dan community. Thank you Doc Dan, for talking directly to my son, when he wrote to you, because I was too shy to, and told you how I was just diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. That was such a blessing to witness your kind words to my son. And all of the people here, over and over, every day, you all just seem to have the most comforting things to say, to the Doc, but for the rest of us too. I will forever consider Dr. Dan one of the most special people i have ever "known", And yes John, this is an incredible phenomenon, how your brother with his special nature, became a catalyst for this incredible expression of love from our Panda family to your family. What wonderful people! Bless you all!
