@@PeterPete No mate. "Hold my hands up" is all well and good if you and I are having a discussion. But you have to realise who we are dealing with here when it comes to the censorious progressive left. The fact is you NEVER apologise to them for anything. All, and I mean ALL they care about is POWER. By any means necessary as their literal slogan says - and they will lie, cheat, smear, defame and cry victim with ZERO scruples if it achieves that power. When you apologise to them, all you do is hand them your own knife to stab you with. It's that simple. I used to be a moderate conservative and it is the fact that the kind of people I used to be are thoughtful, open minded, self reflective and humble, that is the reason we keep LOSING and the left keep GAINING GROUND everywhere. I am now on the radical dissident right as a result of supporting that hiding to nothing for years. What is simply needed is to, as Jonothan Bowden put it, CLEAR THEM OUT.

@@stephfoxwell4620 Yes. It wasn’t called slavery of course,it was a form of bonded servitude. These people were often treated very badly .As Cobbet pointed out in the early 19th century, many of the English rural poor were often worse off than slaves , they at times had no or little food , bad accommodation and work from sunrise to sunset. Most slaves on the plantations had regular food ,accommodation and clothing . The millions of pounds spent on freeing the slaves could have been spent on the British people , there was many things that needed funding. This is what most anti slavery compensation people were saying at the time, ‘look to our own people’. But the working people were overwhelmingly in favour of the compensation bill even though most could not vote for it. Yet the left wing blacks still find an excuse to carp about it.

@@forthfarean Slaves were treated better than the poor in the UK because slaves had a value, whereas the poor in Britain had no value, and there were always plenty more to replace them when they died.
@forthfarean
@forthfarean 2 жыл бұрын
@@catwoman7462 That’s not strictly true. Everyone in Britain had the same rights and the protection of the law, although some laws were weighted heavily in favour of landowners. The problem was if a slump or individual misfortune struck then severe hardship could follow. There were good and bad times but the rural poor, the labourer ,earned very little and had nothing to fall back on except the Parish poor laws. The labourers circumstances deteriorated after enclosures . Before then most of the rural population had varying degrees of individual land ownership or use. Until the end of the 18th century a lot of the land was still owned and farmed in the strip system. The people also had rights to use of common land. The system was not very efficient really but the rural poor had more access to the way the land was used. Slaves were expensive so the vast majority took care of their ‘investment’ . Also of course plantation owners were not all the same ,some were more kind and considerate than others. The idea of having slaves was to put them to work ,not kill them . It was a cruel institution, an ancient one and probably a consequence of little or no technology. The industrial revolution brought machinery which was more reliable and subsequently cheaper in the long run bringing increased production. In Britain much of the ruling class and the people were becoming more aware of the situation of slaves and organisations formed to abolish it . The government put pressure on the colonies where slavery was in practice but an act of parliament abolishing the institution settled it . It took about 30 years to completely abolish it and 20 million pounds ,a huge amount of money raised by issuing bonds. It took 150 years to pay off by British taxpayers.
@forthfarean
@forthfarean 2 жыл бұрын
@freebeerfordworkers A lot of criminals were transported to America ,Australia instead of being executed. Most were kept as captive workers and yes conditions were ,or could be ,cruel. The Whites were not suited to work in the plantations in the West Indies or the Deep South of US and were not productive. Black slaves imported from parts of Africa could stand the climate and work better. These people were in the main already slaves in their homeland . The Muslim people and the African tribes were the main suppliers of these unfortunate people. The idea of stopping slavery was novel and revolutionary ,it had been a part of the human societies for ever. Yet Britain already was thinking ahead of the age ,inventing all sorts of machinery for rural and urban use, and the ideas of the rights of man were spreading .As more people were informed of the situation of slaves by increased communication outrage started to build . When the organised groups started to get to work with serious campaigning the days of slavery were numbered as far as Britain’s colonies were concerned.

Some wealthy people had shares in plantations or sugar importing or companies that traded in exotic merchandise including slaves, a few owned plantations but didn’t live in the West Indies,so had no contact with slaves or any transactions involving them. @@dogsenseforu301 A lot of people misunderstand the industrialisation of Britain. Although factory work was hard ,by our standards, thousands of people left the land to work in the factories because the pay was better and the work actually lighter. This was why the countryside was depopulated. Children worked in the factories but they also worked on the land from a very early age. Often parents ignored the acts limiting child labour because they wanted the extra money the children earned. The various factory acts and inspectors got better conditions quite quickly overall. The arrival of industrial capitalism was a new economic force ,never seen before anywhere. It had massive advantages but drawbacks too. It took time to regulate the conditions of labour. But on the land pay was very low and hours sunrise to sunset. Society ,people ,priorities ,expectations ,necessities of life .world views were very different 200-300 years ago. Comparisons can only be made with other life experiences of that time,not our time. Britain was in the forefront of most modern technologies and societal development. In just over 100 years Britain was changed from a rural economy to an industrial economy . That is some achievement, especially as there was no prior examples to follow, no experiences to learn from. It was new,raw and very energetic.

@stevewhite2245

@@lesleyb5591 No. The British government did 2 things. First they tasked the Royal Navy with hunting down all slaves ships any where they could find them, free the slaves and sink the ships. Secondly they paid slave owners at the time for the freedom of their slaves. That debt, and its interest was finally paid off in 2015. The money was borrowed from Banks at the time it was paid. People throughout the world castigate Britain as if we were the only nation dealing with slaves. But what other country did what Britain did in ending slavery? No one, no one ever gives Britain credit for that.... we only ever get countries and people like Jamaica does in demanding reparations.
@michaelhuggins8513
@michaelhuggins8513 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevewhite2245 you are 💯 correct on what you have stated. The navy was not only there to stop illegal slavery but were there to protect the British ships travelling into the Caribbean with indentured labour from Asia. These ships were under attack from the French and Belgium and also the British government wanted to undermine those other countries to reduce their financial growth out of slavery which is why so many Caribbean island speak English. Many Caribbeans have great respect for the monarchy and in most house hold you will find photos of the Queen being centre place. Unfortunately with the way it’s being reported it doesn’t give the historical facts. In short when slavery was ended, it was by way of compensation to the slave owners and not the slaves. The now ex slaves formed unions to agree a fair wage but the land owners would not have this so a new system was introduced call Indentured labour. Most of the people who worked under this system were mostly from Asia and were offered a contact for a number of years and at the end of the contact they would receive land. Indentured workers did not realise that they were basically slaves under another name and for the ex slaves they now were not employed because they wanted union rights and also received no land which has had an effect right up to today which is where the call for reparations comes from. Now everyone know that no money in compensation or reparations will ever be paid but what people really want is an official acknowledgement of the damage that was done and should never happen again. No one is asking for history to be rewritten as all the facts and details of the profits from slavery can be found in the British Archives which were written in great detail by British people who were the best at documenting everything. I know it also seems that only the British are getting hammered about this period of history but this is incorrect, many would release this just by studying French history. Unfortunately when people talk of slavery they only tend to think of people taken against their will and forced into manual labour, it was much more than this, it was rape of men women and children, it was murder, it was amputations, it was killing of babies and so much more. There is a saying “we should never forget”
@lesleyb5591

Just another thought. Did the British government agree to compensate the slave owners for the loss of their "property" because it was the only way they could get enough M.Ps to back the abolition bill? Is this an example of the fact that in the real world you sometimes have to compromise? Or "make a deal with the devil" to put it more bluntly

Perhaps Jamaica would like to repay the foreign aid and debt management we the British taxpayers have donated since its independance in 1962?All the relevant commonwealth countries have been compensated for the sins of the 18th century slavers by aid and investment. Why am I not whingeing about North Africa and the Barbary Pirates or Italy and the Roman Empire. In the 18th century my ancestors were Lake District tennant farmers. How did they benefit from slavery? I refuse to apologise for I am not guilty! Fancy Jamaica promoting its people as victims and losers. Until WW2 it was quite normal for young women to be 'put into service'. My mother b1910 attended a Mission school in Crockleford Heath, Ardleigh, Essex, where only two teachers educated the whole school. She left school at the age of 14 and worked mainly for military families, taking charge of their children at the age of 17 and given only one afternoon off each month. Fortunately my grandmother worked from home as a tailoress because my mother had provide her own uniforms which were sometimes changed three times daily. We were so proud of her Suffolk accent, her brilliant mind and ability to answer questions on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, her knowledge of musiic, handicrafts and ability to surf the Internet at the age of 100 years. Slavery did not prevent her from achieving so much in her life or dampening her enthusiasm for learning until she passed in her 103rd year.

Interesting that the presenter put Irish into the mix of what the brits have done around the world ... although Ireland was made part of Briton it was achieved completely against the will of the Irish ... when I travelled around Ireland many years ago I was shocked at the many mass graves, historical murder sites, destroyed towns, villages and cities all at the hands of the English. The Irish never accepted English rule so I find it surprising that this presenter included Ireland into the British atrocities abroad mix. Although in fairness to the presenter many English ive met don't even know the extent of the atrocities in Ireland carried out by the English ...

Superb video. And what was not discussed about Jamaica was why, after 400 years. Jamaica has now decided to remove the Queen as Head of State. It certainly has nothing to do with a desire for" freedom", nor ' independence". It is China. The Jamaicans will now join the sorry band of nations who have expressed a willingness to forgo their sovereignty...and there membership of the Commonwealth...and port assets...........for Chinese money. Kingston has condemned the country to a life of economic serfdom for the Chinese. They will regret their decision in time. Les Griffiths
