I loved the episode in Avengers EMH that takes almost direct inspiration from this story, "Emperor Stark". Trade Wonder Man for Vision and Doom for Stark and it is essentially the same story. Well Purple Man wasn't captured either, but still very similar story.

This was a kinder, gentler Secret Empire- including the question that you ask here. I’ll used the logic that you espoused in your Secret Empire posts here - if people are forced to do the right thing instead of doing it using their own free will, at some point, they will rebel and all of that imposed order will devolve into disorder. In the end, humanity wouldn’t have learnt anything. If you think about it, Marvel has been consistent in saying that you can't Super hero or Super villain society to a better state. We cannot rely on one man, one ideology, one country to make the world a better place. We have to do it, individually, then as a group then as a world.

So long as the purple man remained alive, everyones will would be bent to doom without question. After purpleman dies, thats no longer true. They wouldn't rebel unless doom ordered it to be. Thats why doom eventually got so bored he just let it all fall apart. Because they wouldn't do anything out of doom's order of "obtaining peace and prosperity for all" The imposed order wasn't because doom took over on his own merits. He took over using the mind controlling powers of purpleman. Outside of those few loose ends he took care of, everyone was under his control and were absolutely obedient.

Theres an episode of earths mightiest heroes called emperor stark thats an absolute adaptation of this story. I had never read this so i didnt realise until now. That show is so good. I wonder how many other adaptations there are. It respects the hell out of the souce material. I really wish we could brimg that show back. I think its the best marvel animated project by a mile. I know that people might think thats a hot take but its how i feel.

It made sense. Purple man was written into a writing corner. His passive powers were and still are too overpowered to let him basically do his own thing because only several people on earth, without assistance from a telepath or something like that, wouldn't instantly fall to his powers. Back then comics weren't very smart with their writing, so Purple man presented one of the biggest DOA scenarios for a character because he was too powerful. Not because he was physically too strong, but because his powers had no formal counter at that point in time. So it was simpler to write him out and hope he'd never return.

Well yes you can argue that Doom does a lot of material good in the world, that doesn't necessarily mean that he made it a better place. Is crime down because societal ills that lead to crime were dealt with or is it cuz everyone is afraid of punishment from the known dictator? Yes you turned over South Africa back to the black majority, but did you eliminate racism? Considering this is the same guy who I'm pretty sure at the time of the story has recently hired Luke Cage to hunt down his dumbass that disguised themselves as black men and then skip out on paying him, as funny as that story is, it speaks volumes. Like does Doom have a point in the idea of one person being appointed as the leader of humanity? Maybe, but should that leader be Doom, the misanthropic narcissist? Hell fucking no.

It was hinted at during the story that anytime a problem presented itself, doom personally attended to micromanage it, if it posed a problem to his plan of world peace. The fact the story said crime and poverty wasn't entirely eliminated meant people could still be racist and what not, but racism on the small scale doesn't really matter if the big picture isn't influenced and still results in a net positive for everyone as a whole. There was no domino effect in dooms world. No persons personal beef would result in nations going to war years later. The buck stopped at the first domino. In dooms world, the individual didn't mean a whole terrible lot, as it was just more statistics and numbers to go through. But once the world was at peace, doom's expectation was that the harmony would trickle down and empower the individual later, which through the power of the purpleman would have 100% worked, had doom not grown so bored he let the whole scheme break down.

To be honest? I've got really cynical over the years about global issues in general. Peace is something that is earned though long hard work, effort and big amount of understanding. We, humans, are flawed and peace under pressure is worth nothing if we are ripped out of freedom to be flawed. What is trully great is when we overcome those flaws since we came a long way as civilization. But if humanity and governments are so full of hatred and egotistical personal interests that leads to threats of using nuclear weapon then... Oh man, in that case we all deserve to die for letting that happen. What's really precious is whan u are angry and raise a hand to beat somebody, but the last second stop yourself realizing it's all wrong. All that aside kudos to the comic writers who maintained Doom's character that pathosly grotesque until this day!😂
