Renowned theologian, Karl Both, once said that we ought to preach with the bible in one hand & a newspaper in the other. In other words, maintain your foundation to scripture but omit cultural relevance/application. When it comes to this philosophy, no other preacher does it better than Dr. E. Dewey Smith, Jr. His preaching ability to blend sacred & secular, while maintaining application of scholarship is one of the many attributes that has made his preaching stick out for YEARS!
Every so often there are gospel songs that hit the charts and sweep churches for WEEKS. Such is the case with this sermon. In 2012, Tamela Mann released a song 'Take Me To The King'. Churches for WEEKS ministered this song through choirs, praise-teams & musical ensembles. Knowing this, in conjunction with the holiday season which this sermon was recorded (Dec 2012), Dr. Smith used the title of her hit for his message! This message encompasses of course the birth of Jesus, society culture, daily life principles and most of all, a hope that we can all hang on to. Listen & be encouraged! It just so amazes me how some people that would call themselves christians have their noses turned up at people and think that they are holier than thou. If this is you, you have totally missed the mark of the high calling of God.
