Dr Emily, eco warrior, bringing the battle to your doorstep and asking you to join the fray. No softening the blow, no false promises, just realistic actions that could be of positive benefit to this world. What's not to like?...."The land ethic simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively: the land... In short, a land ethic changes the role of Homo sapiens from conqueror of the land-community to plain member and citizen of it. It implies respect for his fellow-members, and also respect for the community as such." Aldo Leopold

Those of us, who are Doomers, (and I, incidentally, could not feel more pessimistic), should feel obligated to do all we can.....regardless. I love Dr. Emily's philosophy. I recently started watching her channel, and it was refreshing to see someone who incorporates the fate of the entire web of life into her concern, and doesn't commit the folly of objectifying our fellow earthlings. Thanks, Sandy. Glad you also discovered her. You both compliment each other well.

Europe is already at 2 degC above pre-industrial levels, and the sub-arctic is at 3.25 degC. At our current rate of heat energy generation/capture, we are documenting a 0.14-0.25 day to day land-air temp. anomaly over just 2023, as you can see on C3S "Climate Pulse" page. Sea temp anomalies are nearly 10 degF day to day over air temps and mid-latitude surface sea temps are nearly 70 degF. The real question I can't find an answer to is how much of this enormous amount of heat energy accumulation is from the GHGs/Greenhouse effect, and how much is from humans burning fossil fuels.

Coal-fired power plants in China generate over half of the world's coal-fired power and a significant portion of China's electricity. In 2023, coal accounted for 39.9% of China's electricity supply, while non-fossil fuels like nuclear and renewables accounted for 53.9%. However, China is responsible for 95% of new coal power construction in 2023, with 70.2 GW of new construction underway, which is 19 times more than the rest of the world. As of August 29, 2023, China has 243 GW of new coal power approved or under construction

I sincerely want to believe that both Sandy and Emily have read An Indigenous People's History of the United States or read and/or watched Eliminate the Brutes. I think a more contextual understanding and ever ongoing continual discussion of this topic is extremely important to these more fanciful projections of how we need to be moving forward.

Books and documentaries that show people the roots of our predicament can be great. Becoming aware of the colonial ‘disease’ is foundational. But then how to treat the disease? At some point, people will want to engage with a discipline, a framework, for unlearning, detoxing, deconditioning, or rehabbing, from the “hungry ghost” machine illness, that has and continues to infect most people alive today, in various ways, in different degrees. Northern hemisphere people, Americans specifically, and within that “collective”, people raised with consumer/conquerer identities and training, to avoid just appropriating indigenous wisdom lifeways and winding up doing the same sht that got us here, it does require deep ‘healing’ and ‘reintegrating’ back into nature and being absorbed back into how nature works. This is a difficult unlearning, lifelong, and requires commitment, patience, and humility (very different from humiliation!) Anyway, one course on offer now from the U of Victoria, seems to be one source for beginning this process, in a real, engaged, active way. The podcast posted today by Nate Hagens, interviewing Vanessa Andriotti, talks about all of this. Just one idea for anyone reading/lurking in comments.

I have acquaintances that are first beginning to become aware of the climate changes asked me if I thought humans are the cause. I know better than to day yes as his mind will shut down. I said I don't know. He blinked. Then I followed up with these changes have happened before on its own. He nodded. I followed up with maybe humans kicked the climate into one of these changes but I don't know. No argument like is normal.

When I was about 13 in the 70s we saw a documentary at school about pollution and what factories were doing to the environment. Then that summer we were on our river boat going up to Boston UK. My dad let me steer the boat while he went below and bought up the family's Elson toilet full of our crap and Jays fluid and poured it into the river. He checked no one was looking as it was illegal then. There were places you could safely dispose of it along the route. I knew what that stuff would do to the fish and wildlife. My father was a sergeant on the river police? That day I lost the last be of hope that I could ever love that man again. Just one of many bad things he did.🛳💩👺

My dad was, and still is, a fkn asshole like this, too. It sucks so much to be related to people who are so casually, easily cruel. I used it as rocket fuel though, to help me align with my path. But I really wish way, way more dads were able to be considerate of our earth.

@@juliebarks3195 wild! My ex-brother-in-law is from Blue Blood Boston roots - that brag of being on one of the early Mayflower ships. "According to the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, there may be as many as 35 million living descendants of the Mayflower worldwide and 10 million living descendants in the United States." OK so maybe it's a common Boston claim. hahahahaha.
