Hi @hthomas9891, thanks for your powerful comment from five months ago! We agree, Dr. Fraser's story about walking out of the dealership because of the lack of African American sales agents is a strong example of taking a stand. Reflecting on that story, what specific aspect of his decision or message about economic empowerment resonated most with you? As we look towards thriving in 2025, we're excited to have recently surpassed 10,000 subscribers and are expanding our reach with weekly podcasts released every Monday and a global KZbin audience. The one that struck me the most is about reading at grade level. Only later on in life is black people start to actually comprehend what were reading & by that time... It's all over for us.
@EMPOWERSERIES17 күн бұрын
Student Reading Levels (Based on NAEP Data): 4th Grade: In 2022, the average reading score for Black students on the NAEP was significantly lower than the average score for white students. This gap has persisted over time, though there have been some periods of slight improvement. 8th Grade: Similar to 4th grade, Black students in 8th grade consistently score lower on NAEP reading assessments compared to white students. The gap is often wider in 8th grade than in 4th grade. 12th Grade: Even by 12th grade, a significant achievement gap in reading persists. This means that many Black students are graduating high school without reaching proficient reading levels, which can impact their success in college and careers

@kmcl11 You're right to point out the distinct history of Black Americans, whose ancestors were forcibly brought here through the transatlantic slave trade. This is fundamentally different from voluntary immigration. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that the legacy of slavery, Jim Crow laws, and ongoing systemic racism has had a profound and lasting impact on access to resources, opportunities, and the development of social and professional networks. To say that "little has been taken away" minimizes the immense historical and ongoing injustices faced by Black communities. Dr. Fraser's message of "Rise or Die" speaks to the need to overcome these challenges and build a better future, regardless of the obstacles we face. What steps can we all take to foster greater understanding, build stronger networks, and create more equitable opportunities for everyone? We encourage you to share your thoughts in the comments. While the intention behind not teaching children about race might be to create a more equal and harmonious society, research suggests that it could have unintended negative consequences. Instead, open, honest, and age-appropriate conversations about race are crucial for fostering understanding, empathy, and a commitment to social justice.
@EMPOWERSERIES24 күн бұрын
Research Insights: Children Notice Race Early: Research indicates that children as young as 6 months old notice differences in skin color. By age 3 or 4, they can begin to categorize people based on race. Talking About Race is Important: Studies have shown that talking openly about race and racism can help children develop a more nuanced understanding of social issues and reduce racial bias. Silence Can Be Harmful: When adults avoid talking about race, children may infer that it's a taboo topic or that differences are something to be ashamed of. This can reinforce negative stereotypes and biases.
@EMPOWERSERIES24 күн бұрын
@tic2394 That's an interesting question, and it speaks to a desire for a world without prejudice. However, research actually shows that children notice racial differences from a very young age, and simply not talking about race can have unintended negative consequences. For example, a study by Phyllis Katz found that by age 3, children can exhibit racial bias, even in the absence of explicit instruction. This highlights the importance of open and honest conversations. It's important to provide children with accurate information about race, racism, and the history of inequality so they can develop empathy, understanding, and a commitment to positive change. Ignoring these differences doesn't make them go away; it can actually reinforce biases and prevent meaningful progress. For example, data from the U.S. Department of Education shows that in 2017-18, Black students were 3.8 times as likely to receive one or more out-of-school suspensions as white students. This disparity underscores the need for open discussions about systemic issues. If you're interested in learning more about how to have constructive conversations about race with children, I highly recommend checking out resources from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), specifically their page on "Table Talk: Family Conversations about Current Events," which offers age-appropriate guidance: [invalid URL removed]. We believe that open dialogue, combined with the "Rise or Die" spirit of overcoming challenges, is the best path forward. If you found this helpful, please give the video a thumbs up, share it with others, and subscribe for more content focused on empowerment and positive change. Thanks for your thoughtful question!
@EMPOWERSERIES24 күн бұрын
@allyomeally-watson3285 I understand the sentiment, but suggesting we "try it and see" with children's understanding of race raises serious ethical concerns. It's important to rely on existing research, which clearly demonstrates the importance of acknowledging and discussing racial differences in a constructive and age-appropriate way. Simply avoiding the topic doesn't prevent children from noticing differences or forming biases; it just leaves them without the tools to understand them. For those interested in learning more about how to have productive conversations about race with children, I recommend checking out resources from organizations like the ADL, NAACP, or scholarly articles on child development and race. Here's a helpful starting point from the ADL: www.adl.org/education/resources/tools-and-strategies/table-talk We believe that open dialogue, grounded in research and understanding, is the most effective approach. If you found this information valuable, please give the video a thumbs up, share it with others, and subscribe for more content focused on positive change. Thanks for your input!

HOW MUCH DID YOU SPEND ON YOUR MIND? YOUR EDUCATION? YOUR EMPOWERMENT OF YOURSELF? 💢💢💢👁👁📖🙏🏿❤️💚🫶🏿

Jackie, I love that question: "How much did you spend on your mind?" It's not about the monetary value, but the commitment to self-improvement. As Dr. Fraser points out, and as Dr. Kimbro's E:E ratio shows (Education vs. Entertainment), prioritizing education and empowerment pays off in the long run. I've personally found that investing in [books, courses, mentorship/coaching has been invaluable. I have a speaking coach and going through a program call Speaker Lab.
