What a great song, "Sharing The Night Together"! Here's something you might not know about it. Back in 1967 I was in a band called, "Gary Weaver And The Blue Eyed Pieces Of Soul". Gary, an African-American, was the front man, and the rest of us, Southern White Boys, were the "Blue Eyed Pieces Of Soul". The real leader of the band was a fellow named Eddie Struzick. He was a talented musician and songwriter, and a bit of a pain in the ass, but overall a good guy. We played a version of "Sharing The Night Together", although the version that was delivered to Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show was a much more polished version. I left the band for college and didn't think much more about the tune until I heard it on the radio several years later. At first, I didn't recognize it, but when I heard the part, " Wo-Oh... Yeah", I knew that it was the song we played so many times in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
Eddie had that tune in his pocket for five years or so, but something was missing... He just couldn't put all the pieces together. Then he met Ava Aldridge, who according to her late husband Aubey, helped Eddie finish it in a single day. I guess the chemistry netween these two great songwriters was what "Sharing The Night Together" needed all along.
After all these years, I heard from Blue Eyed Pieces Of Soul bass player, Mike Barnett! Mike had been surfing around KZbin and caught this video. He sent me this note about Eddie: "I met Eddie Struzick when I was 12 years old. He and his family moved into a house across the street from where I lived. He asked me if I played any instrument and I said I had two guitars. Eddie was very excited and asked me if I could show him how to play the guitar. I knew just a few chords so I showed him what I knew. Eddie came to my house everyday after that to play my guitar. I never met anybody that was so obsessed with playing the guitar and singing. He always had a song on his mind. He was very gifted with music. The song "Sharing The Night Together" was one of many songs that he had on his mind. I was very lucky to know and play in three different bands with Eddie. - Mike"
