The sad thing about this conversation is how quickly it has dated. While I agree that the community spirit which originally arose in the wake of the first lockdown was heartening and encouraging, as the Covid-19 'crisis' has continued IMO if ever there was an example of the map not being the territory and there being a distorted reality driven by left brain reductionism in response to a media and political fear narrative, we are living that now. I would be very interested to see Dr McGilchrist and Mark Tyrrell engage in conversation on this same subject 6 months down the line.

It is very strange listening to this a year later. Within the first 10 minutes they talk about community and crisis bringing out the best in people and there was a kind of expectation that it would pass. A year later and we are more divided than ever, neighbours at each other’s throats, the rich richer than ever and the poor poorer, governments a joke and taking financial advantage. The whole thing is one huge mess and the world has gone crazy. I don’t see a way back, and I’ve no idea where we are going.

Regarding the tendency to forget about pain once it's gone, I am reminded that the Arabic words for "human" and "forget" come from the same root. In Islam our original sin is not disobedience, but rather forgetfulness. Thank you, Iain, for helping us remember where we come from.

Dr McGilchrist, I agree and applaud so much of what you express here. However, I observe that you see this crisis as a fait-accomplis. This crisis is unfolding on a daily basis and the scale of its impact on us may be greatly determined by the those in authority. The environmentalists have interpreted this crisis as an environmental wake-up call, spiritual and community leaders see this as a way on refocusing our interconnectedness and cooperation. Although looking at the silver linings and what we can learn from a situation is a must, in this crisis I wonder whether we need to take a more active and aware role in shaping the outcome. How we do this in my opinion is the question.

Conscious Explorer I believe he laid out a potential route. Bringing our attention to the local and community level while maintaining the individual strive that is brought with capitalism. A large shift in the way of thinking is needed to take place in the individual so that it can cascade outward to the greater community. Right now I believe we have these people remaining in power not only because they hold their power but because many individuals on the outside believe that the actions of “authority” are acting in their best interest. Once people experience something different in a tangible way it will allow that change to take place. From my perspective of course.

Having studied the works of Dr McGilchrist, within a graduate neuropsychotherapy course, I was interested to view this conversation which I experienced as thought provoking. Coming from Christchurch N.Z, where we are still recovering from the affects of an earthquake and a terrorist attack, within my psychotherapy practice during this time-frame, I have noted an increase in client resilience likely substantiating that "it takes a crisis to make shifts." Of interest, my observation predates the tragic events in that my trauma related clients, who I predicted would be the most affected, were more frequently the ones who supported their loved ones - "a rehearsal of what may come?" I agree that maintaining a balance/harmony between a global and local community both from a psychological and a physical perspective is indeed grounding. In this sense my clients grasp the concept of a macro and micro level and are encouraged to focus on the latter during these uncertain times. Thank you Mark for this interest conversation!

Balance requires openness to others, communication, consensus, difficult if not impossible when a society is so divided and people in power (politicians, media, religious etc) exploit divisiveness for their own gain. You would think a worldwide pandemic would bring the world together, all of us against a common enemy. Besides a left hemispheric lobotomy, what else can we do? Music and food seem to be postures unifying forces. What else can we come up with especially from us, the common people? Our survival ultimately will depend on this answer.

On the other hand, our atomistic individualism does have its benefit as far as keeping the population down. We have been on a carbon reduction trajectory since the industrial revolution moving from coal to oil to gas to atomic power to solar and wind. The state of fear that we are being driven to is unbeneficial. There will always be trade-offs with any solution we pick. Best to use the solutions which have the least negative ramifications. These are rarely the most obvious.
