The surgeon didn't want to put her on all those meds, but her husband coerced him into it, saying that she didn't handle pain well and that she'd need help sleeping and managing the pain. Any real doctor worth his salt would never have given someone narcotics like that. She was on enough stuff to tranquilize an elephant. Clearly her husband's intent was that she overdose and he could claim it as an accident. And she did overdose, it's evident. He just couldn't pull off the "accident" part of the story.

The whole story includes the fact that he was not a physician. He faked all kinds of documents. In addition, the mother told the daughter when she was visiting that she suspected her husband might be overmedicating her/trying to kill her. Even if he wasn't there to shove her into the tub, the medication would be a very likely culprit for her ending up there through the loss of consciousness or even trigger the heart attack if there was one.
