FILM DESCRIPTION:
Terence Young directed this first of a long line of screen adventures with Ian Fleming's unflappable British Secret Service Agent 007 in a fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek style that set the tone for the rest of the popular series. Sean Connery sets the standard by which all future takers must measure themselves as the insouciant and devil-may-care James Bond. The story concerns Bond being sent to Jamaica to investigate the murders of a British agent and his secretary. During his investigation, he comes into contact with the evil and unscrupulous Chinese scientist Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) who, living on an island called Crab Key, is hard at work in a nuclear laboratory. Dr. No's scheme is to divert rockets being fired from Cape Canaveral off their charted course and to blackmail the United States to get their rocket launches restored to normal. Helping Bond is Ursula Andress (mostly undressed in a bikini throughout most of the film), as well as bad gals like Zena Marshall, who almost leads Bond to his death in her bedroom, and Eunice Gayson, a Bond pickup in a London gambling house who proves herself a greater adversary than even James Bond can handle.

Haha. Well, unbiased on that one thing maybe. Or is he actually just biased against all nations because they wouldn't give him a job? He's also an incredibly unhinged but dangerously clever lunatic of course. Brilliant villain. Joseph Wiseman really set the standard from the very beginning. Everyone always goes on about how Goldfinger really set the standard for Bond movies, but IMO it merely added a few bells and whistles. Dr No and From Russia With Love laid down almost all of the foundations and did so brilliantly. Connery 100% nailed that very first introduction at the gambling table too. "Bond, James Bond" has never been delivered anywhere near as amazingly since, and in that first one, it was because he was directly asked, "Mister...?". Since then, they had him often just saying "My name is Bond, James Bond" for no reason, which just sounds weird. Terrence Young, the director, really had a big part in that though. He even made Connery into such a perfect Bond. Before this film, Connery was very rough, very Scottish and even quite bald on top. They trained him in how to move, talk and acquit himself. In his later movies, Connery got rather chubby, lazy and silly.

When people cite the fencing match in Die Another Day as a good action sequence, I am reminded of scenes like these; in the classic age of Bond one of the hallmarks of the films, as common as the Gun barrel or opening credit sequence, is the moment when Bond and the villain have a casual, gentlemanly discussion. Littered with subtext and quiet contempt. Sizing one another up. Increasing the stakes. The golf match with Goldfinger. The baccarat game with Largo. The confrontation before the battle with Grant. And of course the granddaddy of those scenes here with Dr No. To me THIS is a superior action scene. Sometimes the action is in the dialogue and the details. (I mean no disrespect to those who love the fencing match.)

This is where it all started folks. The Dr. No Syndrome - A villain is capable of shooting our hero in the head but doesn't. The reason why is always a fleeting one that makes no sense. in this case damaged pride? Yet the syndrome is a necessary evil that allows a hero to get to know his enemy face to face.
@jonathancampbell5231
@jonathancampbell5231 7 жыл бұрын
It's because he was trying to recruit him for SPECTRE; when he sees that this won't work, he keeps him alive for use later- presumably, he wants to torture Bond for information before killing him. And to be fair, he sent several agents to shoot Bond earlier in the film and none of them succeeded either. It DOES make sense, even if a pattern emerges in later movies.

I personally can't wait for them to be more original. As much as I love Rami and he will no doubt play it very well, rehashing old classic villains just seems like a bigger indicator than ever that the Bond franchise is going to crumble soon. Craig had such promise but, for me, I find him now utterly 2 dimensional, robotic, always angry and just even plain awkward in the role. I also have never been able to get over how much he looks like some grizzled, crew-cut Russian henchman masquerading as 007.

"The successful criminal brain is always superior. It has to be." He's got a point. Simply committing a crime is easy, but to do so without being caught, without being stopped, without any significant loss, without being ratted out, without being defeated by powerful, passionate and intelligent adversaries and to do so via an enormous amount of intelligence as opposed to sheer blind luck and help, requires quite a brain. Dr No is unique among Bond villains because what drives him is desire to prove himself, unlike other Bond Villains who are driven by Greed, rage, lust and delusions of righteousness. Pride, which of course cometh before his fall. And he's so deliciously enigmatic and emotionless.

Man you can see the difference with Connery's performance here compared to his later few films. Here he's young, hungry, suave, cool, confident, and plays the role with that youthful arrogance. He's really invested in the conversation. he can tell he phoned in by 67 which is a shame because by then he met Blofeld (the leader) but had no where near something like this between them.
