What a great movie Awakenings was, done by two legendary actors. This film was said to be Williams top favourite film he enjoyed being apart of, same thing for De Niro. The film literally touches your heart, and teaches you the value of life and how many people take it for granted. God bless Williams and Oliver Sacks. Two heros in a better place now. It's also amazing how Williams a few years later would battle a similar brain trauma/disease. Theres no words that can fully describe this movie. Astonishing. I could say the part that hit me the most was when Leonard had said he counden't read anymore, and how he told his lover that it was his final time seeing her, like holy there is so much that could be said about the film, just you can't describe it, you can only see the film for yourself. God bless Williams, Sacks and all those patients who had suffered, and battled. Legends. Such an under-rated film.

The scene that always gets me in Awakenings, though, is when Robin’s character Dr Sayer falters in recording the deteriorating condition of Leonard but Leonard urges him to go on: “Learn! Learn! I saw the documentary about Sleepy Sickness & read about it. Apparently there is no known cure. It’s Encephalitis Lethargica is the medical name. After the person develops it they can also develop post encephalitic Parkinson’s disease. In the documentary it showed that Dr. Sacks prescribed L Dopamine which helped the patients come out of the vegetative state. So the L Dopamine is what kept the disease at bay & unfortunately had limitations & side affects.

Thing is that their muscles might not have atrophied, as they were not paralysed. All the patients probably had good muscle tones. Parkinsonism only affects the part of your nervous system thats supposed to organise and refine your movements. If this system fails, muscles are still able to work, it's just that your brain doesn't "let them" to. There would surely be some atrophy from years of inactivity but not to the point of immobility.

What I can't understand is why, when Robin Williams did an amazing impersonation of Dr. Sacks, did the movie portray Dr. Oliver Sacks as having an American accent? Is there some reason that Americans want to lay claim to everything achieved when shown by Hollywood??

You know its hard to do accents while portraying it as natural. Maybe robin didn't have that natural vibe with his accent. This was too harsh of a criticism

@@arai6147 Robin Williams was a natural at imitations and did a great British accent. No excuses here. Only Hollywood changing history yet again. A "harsh critism", really? Hollywood is always changing real life events and people, this is a slap in the face to those portrayed. The world doesnt revolve around America, it's about time America came back down to earth and joined everyone else. Actors from around the globe are always using American accents in movies and TV Shows, it's not that hard. Just look at the British actor Hugh Laurie who played the lead in 'House'! @imtheonlyusianwithmynameso11593 жыл бұрын
No. That’s not true. These were post-encephalitic Parkinson’s patients, in other words they developed Parkinson’s symptoms after contracting the flu and after having encephalitis lethargica, or the sleepy-sickness, during the 1920s epidemic. This was a small hospital and, anyway, L-dopa’s side effects are less pronounced but still present in Parkinson’s patients after a long time. Dr. Sacks invoked ‘chaos theory’ in order to explain why they cycled through experiencing tics and dyskinesia. There are a lot of reasons why your theory isn’t as plausible as L-dopa being an imperfect drug (all drugs are imperfect and cause side effects) and I recommend you read the book Awakenings.
