I'm am sooo into decluttering! My family are major hoarders and I used to be one as a child. However, that being said I'm majorly obsessive over organisation and how everything should have a place. As i grew up and became my own person, I started to declutter regularly and now it's literally a weekly ritual. Even if i just get rid of 2 useless/never used items per week, I feel so good about it. Hoarding is an addiction that should be broken. One must stop and realise that things are just materialistic and everything can be replaced and your 'what if' items never actually end up being used. A clear space is a clear mind, that's how i see it.

Ya I am like that. But then I got hit with job loss then depression. having extras in my home kept me afloat. I can sell items etc. it's a trap. I have a hard time letting go with my income insecurity. Emotional items. Take a photo of it. If i bring it in I must find things to let go so I can bring it into my space. Me my new QUESTION I ask myself. Is it worth my Mental health to keep it.

If u get low. Exercise. Eat healthy and see other people as well as family. Sunbathe when weather is good. Wrap up and go for a walk when it's cold. Both are free and good for you. Don't waste your life attaching yourself to things instead of getting out and making friends. People need people.

"Physical clutter is emotional clutter!" Wow, that is so true! I am going to embroider that on something and hang it up! Next time I try to get rid of something, I am going to think about that and observe what emotional clutter is happening. My husband had to remove a lot of stuff from our furnace room so we could get a new furnace today. This spurred us to go thru it and discard and donate. Now my little storage/furnace room is neat as a pin! Now I am going to declutter the rest of the house!

Good effort. The tips aren't the most effective however. These are my rules: 1. Trash or donate anything you don't need. 2. Put items where they are to be used. 3. Further organize by putting like with like.

Rather than throwing unwanted materials, give them to Big Brothers, Big Sisters. They sell them to a company that can use re-sell them or if they can’t, they recycle the material. Even socks and underwear! The landfill is an awful place for them to go. Win, win win!

Justin is TOO CUTE!! That smile! Those DIMPLES,OMG!!! This guy OOZES sensuality. LOL I'm old enough to be his mom! BUT...for decluttering, I prefer Helen from the tv show "neat!" One quaint: what's with the darn candles?!? EVERY ORGANIZER covers the decluttered house with candles. Most candles are full of toxic chemicals designed to smell amazing (just like the ones in our food that are designed to TASTE great) as they poison us. And, I have animals: pets + candles = house on fire! So why bother decluttering? Just go straight to burning the house down; save time, stress and aggravation, and THEN you can go shopping with the insurance money!!! Win-Win-Win!!! Right?

The one year rule is a great place to start. I hang onto “emotional “ items and they are of no value😕 So I learned to keep a box going to put items into at all times and when it fills haul to my favorite place for donations. The place I choose uses these items to train people new skills or for missions to those who are in need of basic items makes me realize that I am making a difference by letting go vs keeping an item. Pass it on to someone in need😍

Ask yourself this. is it worth my Mental health to keep it. What Purpose does it serve, and what Need does that fulfill and is there somthing else that might fill that need better or more efficiently. Take a set of 22 pots for example. as a single person that never cooks big or elaborate meals Why would I keep all 22 pieces and not just the 2 pots I use regularly.

I get ya, a common thing and I often heard a rule of thumb: set a expiration date: if it’s used several times after you unearthed it after a set period of time keep it, or else get rid of it. All about if that some day really Will happen. Ppl say to get rid of clothes you wore when you were slimmer as you Will just want to get new ones even if you become slimmer. Not Me. I’m steadily loosing weight and looking forward to all my old clothes. I did go through them all and photographed the lot so I know what I have. Plus I got rid of old things that was more trash than clothes, like a pair of leggings that was crumbling and underwear.

Yes..they kind of use "clutter" as a metaphorical umbrella..its not ALL just emotional transference..a lot is..but i find it useless to throw away things..(into the landfill!!) That can be recycled..upcycled..used differently..i am unwilling to throw things out just to have to repurchase them later ( eg wood screws or yards of fabric i cant replace but havent had the time to make into that sofa recover).. In this disappearing of the middle class..i no longer have the funding i used to have...and i have recently realized that my anxiety and tendency to save things are woven into my highly creative Self..so its complicated. I HAVE discovered though..that just throwing away trash..and focusing on "paper mountain" makes a big opening..and i just keep going

I'd do that if I could stand or walk well, but my pain is horrific so doing things like that is too painful. ASlso I have so much inventory there is no place to move anything to! I can't afford to hire help seeing as most of what I have IS for sale. I just can't do the sales now after damaged SI joint, bone on bone hip broken L4, FM, COPD & being dirt poor without family to help. Can't afford to pay someone to help because my income is $900.00 per mo in Santa Monica, Ca. Can't love. No place to go except for my car... Not going to give up my place. My stuff is mostly yardsale items. Posted an ad seeking someone with a yard to do sales together. So far just guys lying, losers or people leaving town. No one who has a place & can help me. I wish I could get around as I use to without such terrible pain. No pain meds anymore so I am crippled with pain... If I didn't have all these terrible bone problems & terrible pain I could do much of this myself...

okay My question for keeping items that works for me is. Is it Worth my Mental Health to keep it? you can rephrase that to somthing like IS it worth moving again and again to clean around it. Is it worth the stress to keep everything I want to keep. Find out somthing that is worth more to you than Stuff. Set a Timer. 15 mins in 1 spot. 3 bags. I find sitting is best so you focus on one spot and don't get distracted. Garbage, Recycle/donate, keep/put away/deal with. Recycle/donate stuff should leave the house asap to prevent raiding. I have things that I have too much money into and I can see a big value in and with money tight I can't get myself to donate it. Facebook buy and sell or kijiji are great options If you have someone you trust and are wanting to help you ask them if they could hold onto the items until you have time to sell/donate the items. Be sure to Not abuse it as extra storage. set a day every month to Purge those items. Good luck.

These "organizing experts" are just trying to stand out by giving this advice or they trying to out-do Marie Kondo. Just be sensible and only buy what you need.

First rule - WRONG !!!! Just because you haven't used it in a year doesn't mean you should throw it out. I do not have clutter. But I am not going to throw out a swimsuit because I have gone a year without using it. Someone could break their leg. Should they throw out all their ski equipment because they can't ski for one season ? And then have to buy it all again? That is really expensive for all the equipment and clothes. A better rule would be to ask yourself why you haven't used it. The guy is Nuts !

Jewelry I rarely wear. Some I will be selling, but not a big priority now. Big things, breakable things R first to go. I also keep things to fix things. So I have real junk drawers, but they come in handy when i need to fix or repair something I am going to sell restored & complete. I keep many things just because they bring JOY!! We all should keep things we really may use, love, or make us happy from time to time... I don't need to cling to everything, but photos, writings, artworks I do keep. Plus art supplies which R many & messy... I don't consider any of that clutter...

I dumped my junk drawer into a large popcorn tin. 😂 All of those little screws or screwdrivers and duct tape.

I'm a stay at home mom also do online school plus have my own business while taking care of my children, my house became so overwhelming that I knew I had to get rid of things, I purged my house and got rid of so much it was like the most amazing feeling, still have a long way to go but it's a start, plus it's been easier to clean. Yes if you house is declutter than there is no excuse why no one can't clean their home on a daily basis

Chiming in to reiterate the IMPORTANCE of *DONATING!* I can’t believe how many people just lazily put unwanted things in trash, when so many local charity organizations are HAPPY to go out of their way on a weekly visit (I can think of 3 that come around every month , sometimes twice a month!) to pick up items outside YOUR DOOR, most anything, and any amount of it. There’s seriously NO EXCUSE not to donate! Not shaming those w/ legitimate mental issues, however, for those that are just greedy for instant gratification, It’s GROSS how people “need” “collections” of whatever- get bored with it, then be like “Oh well- let me just TRASH the planet because now I want my space.”... how nice for YOU. ... more and more we are seeing the perils of “WHOEVER DIES WITH THE MOST TOYS, WINS” pullleaze... wake up people. Marketing and capitalism at ITS very best... not ours.

I agree. I see so many people throwing stuff away. Some brand new. I just don't get it. They can call & have it donated, or take the time to go to the Salvation Army to donate their stuff. I do get many items to sell from my neighbors as they move out which is a blessing for me. Some I keep but most I take to sell to earn an income... I do see some FB groups giving things to people by posting it on a giveaway group. Many just put it on their porch or say where it is outside for someone who wants it to pick it up... Also, I personally don't buy anything that doesn't get used up. No clothes, no more stuff I just see & like. If I do I usually will buy from a second-hand store. Cheaper & more quality too... I strongly believe in reuse, repurpose & resell rather than buy new things!!!

Actually that rule should be updated to maybe six months because one year is really long.

There doesn't need to be a "rule" at all. People are different and items are different. Some things go sooner and some later.

It a common rule, especially for clothes in the Theory that in year you go through all the seasons which in Six months you prob don’t depending on where you live.

Maybe for some, MissVasques. Others of us put on and take off a few pounds from year to year and like to keep a few things we love which may be a bit tight for a while yet fit perfectly a year later. I do not have a cluttered wardrobe and it is lovely to use nice clothes again instead of having to rebuy later.

@Fatimah Hussain. One year is necessary if you live through four distinct seasons. Sometimes 2 years. I have stuff that I only wear when it gets to -20°C or below. If I don't use it this winter I probably will next year.
