It is such a pleasure to listen to such an intelligent conversation. At the Angel Academy of Art, Florence, we teach that good paintings are the result of a combination of empiricism and conceptualism. We also teach that morphology is, if anything, more important than anatomy. The artist must understand the form: big forms and the little forms that are subservient to the big forms!! We use sight-size only for cast work and still life, never from the live model. One has to learn to DRAW (and draw with colour) the live model. Thank you for bringing us this book, Ms Benham (I went straight out and bought a copy, as well as telling our students to buy one). Will you ever produce Richer's third book? Rick Casali, your sculpture is great!!! Complimenti davvero! And bravi, both of you.

Thank you Michael, that means a lot coming from you. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Allana for translating this book for us. She is a wealth of knowledge and a great communicator, I certainly learned a lot from conducting this interview. Hopefully I can have her back for another discussion soon! Jesus Villarreal and I are old college buddies, I believe he attended your atelier some time ago??

Thank you for your kind words, Michael. I am so pleased to bring this book back to a receptive audience. I agree that morphology encompasses both knowledge of anatomy and sustained observation from life, and as such, integrates skills which the artist and art student spend a long time in developing. I really admire the institution you have built and your contribution to the figurative arts. I would love to meet you in Florence one day! And I have my eye on Richer's third book...

Excellent episode! I’m ordering these books. I do like Riley rhythms, I’m in anatomy overwhelm but it’s so interesting. So informative 🙌

Great stuff I have both Richer books and use the drawings but would love to have Alana and you do further lectures explaining the text in a more visual way and on sculpture in the round..
