yeah he isn't to be trusted. first of all: he said to dr. charles “i didn't write to her, definitely should've” but told dr reese that he DID write letters to her. first red flag. secondly: he the fact he sought consultation with dr charles but didn't pick up the medication only means one of two things - one, that he isn't actually sick. he might use dr reese's kindness and exploit it saying it's for his medication bills, or two - he is planning to use dr. reese for money. he couldn't afford to pick up the medication and only now resorts to his daughter for financial help. finally, he also mentions that he just wants to reconnect with his daughter - link it up with “daughters take care of fathers”. only now, when dr reese is successful does he attempt to establish a reconnection with her. he isn't to be trusted.

Dr Reese's caracter was so well written. Her personality/behaviour totally fits the personality/behaviour of someone who was emotionally neglected as a child. Her dad left when she was 6 and since he is a psycopath then those 6 years would be without connection and in addition to that her mother seems to be emotionally unavailable as well as we could see in season 2 (i think) when she canceled their date and sent her 1000 dollars instead. As a result of such an upbringing, people have a hard time forming close relationships in adulthood, become reserved, more introverted, empathic, sensitive, anxious etc just like Sarahs caracter. I think that is why she took dr charles "betrayel" so hard. Logically she knew he couldn't tell her but her abandonment issues may have been triggered. She subconsciously thought that you were supposed to be my dad figure yet you kept such an important thing from me, this means i was wrong about you, you betrayed me just like my real dad". This is how someone with abandonment issues may react when feeling betrayed or disrespected etc, especially if their attachment style is fearful avoidant. I have never before analyzed a fictional caracter but this topic is so important because most anxiety, depression, low confidence, jealousy, suicidal thoughts, not feeling good enough, self-sabotage etc have their roots in childhood and not having parents willing or not able to give one an emotionally secure upbringing.
@consumingpaintchips2 жыл бұрын
OMG! finally someone who has found that sarah's characters anxiety/panic attacks may well be from her childhood. she has reacted rashly based off of fear/anxiety which is also a sign of a person that has been neglected and we've seen her have panic attacks.

This hits so unbelievably hard. Knowing that her father eventually turns out to be psychopathic - it's ironic. I'm no psychiatry resident, but a clinical psychology grad. My father, too, is psychopathic and I'm estranged from him. It makes me so happy to see someone like me represented in media - you don't hear about the children of psychopaths often, let alone of those that don't go around killing people.

Exactly. That ‘inconsistency’ was probably what prompted Dr Charles to ring the pharmacy to check if he’d picked up those pills for his ‘anxiety’ - Dr Charles was trying to figure out if perhaps Sarah’s Dad had just come to the hospital so he had a better chance of getting to see her - NOT because he was a ‘fan’ of Dr Charles’ psychiatric work or because of his anxiety about dying. I think he hoped that by speaking to Dr Charles, when his daughter read his letter Dr Charles would probably (still maintaining confidentiality) subtly encourage Sarah to reconnect with him. That’s my theory anyway lol. So wish I could find the other parts to this episode!!!

I believe in really life, this would not be allowed due to conflict of interest. Of course the situation is complex because he only told him after the fact. I’m not sure what would happen in this type of situation realistically.
@Czadzikable5 жыл бұрын
@@sierram3141, in real life, at least in the UK (though I suspect the codes of conduct for mental healthcare professionals must be at least similar in the USA), a (good) psychiatrist, or a psychologist, psychotherapist or counsellor, would, upon finding out about the personal connection that creates conflicts of interest and dangerously shifts the boundary of a therapeutic relationship toward a personal one, immediately let the patient know of this conflict and explain that they cannot see them because of this. In normal circumstances it might be expected that the patient might not have known that this kind of personal connection would violate the safe boundaries of a therapeutic relationship, in fact many people might seek someone recommended or known by a friend or family member as they might feel like they can trust the psychiatrist/psychologist/psychotherapist, etc. more because of that connection - although any respectable mental health professional would explain why this isn't appropriate. However, in this storyline, the patient is a professor of astrophysics, and as someone with such a high level of education and position in academia, he should have known better! In fact, he would have to have known, as such conflicts of interest exist in academia too - i.e. he shouldn't be supervising or marking work of students that he has a personal relationship with or who have a close connection with someone else he has a close personal relationship with - e.g. an adult child of the professor's romantic partner. So in real life a professor such as this character *clearly* would have known that it would be unprofessional and if he purposefully sought (as this character openly did) such a clinician, it would be vastly inappropriate and highly suspicious - just as it is clearly suspicious here - this professor "dad" reeks of being manipulative!
