Redd Foxx had an excellent variety show.If it had premiered a decade earlier,it would have run several years.

You're 100% right! I recall watching this show as a teenager and it was as funny as his previous show to me. However, the variety show format was starting to wane by the late 70s. 1977-78 would also be the last season of "The Carol Burnette Show", another variety show, which had been on the air for over 10 seasons.

Wow, what memories these bring back! I was a mere lad of 14 when this show ran in ‘77, and this recurring skit, along with Alphonse & Victoria were the two I remember most. Funny and very offbeat show, albeit short-lived! Oh, and I believe that’s dance choreographer Lester Wilson playing piano with the band. He was the choreographer for John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever which came out in the same year.

I recall watching this show as a teenager & it was very funny to me. However, by the late 70s the variety show format was starting to wane. That same season Richard Pryor also had a variety show that lasted only 4 episodes. The 1977-78 tv season would also be the final one for the queen of variety shows, Carol Burnett, after 10 seasons on the air.
@clownjewels7 ай бұрын
Interesting. Yes, it seems like everything has its time and then the new best thing comes along. We wonder if the 80s stand-up comedy boom had anything to do with it. Clubs were everywhere and so were the shows and then in the 90s those were replaced by something else. Thanks for watching!
Is Redd really playing that clarinet? If not, that's a damn good fake.

YIKES, S&S was still at the top of the ratings, and he left for this garbage?
@1talldaddy11 ай бұрын
no this was after Sanford and Son
@deejay840311 ай бұрын
@@1talldaddyThat’s what he was saying. Foxx abruptly left Sanford & Son at NBC after the fifth season because he signed for this variety show on ABC. The variety show didn’t last one full season
@hardren10111 ай бұрын
@@1talldaddy That's not exactly accurate. S & S was in its 6th season (while no longer the #1 show, it remained in the top 5 1st half of the season but finished the season at #27). It also coincided with the end of Fox's current 2 yr contract. Knowing this ABC began to woo Fox, and they met all of Foxx's demands (one of which was that he be paid for the entire season regardless if the show was canceled). By the mid-70's variety shows had reached their peak. At the time Fox left the show, b/c the ratings were so good, NBC's intention was to retool the show with Demond Wilson as its' star. Wilson was on board, but shit went left when NBC refused Wilson's salary demand. Even with Wilson out, NBC moved ahead with a spin-off "Sanford Arm's", consisting of the supporting cast from S&S. However the show flopped and was canceled after 5 episodes. Meanwhile, " The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour" was canceled after 4 months. Fox then approached NBC regarding a revival of S&S which NBC was open to. Shit once again went left when Wilson would only return if he got equal billing and pay on par with Fox, NBC balked, and Wilson walked, but again, NBC decided to move forward anyway. Sanford premiered as a mid-season replacement, ratings tanked, it was pulled, placed on hiatus, and re-tooled (They attempted to focus on the bonding btwn yn/old & white/black with the character Cal, Fred becoming engaged to a rich widow was abandoned). Upon the show's return for a 2nd season, the ratings did not improve and Sanford was canceled.
