Native Americans are tribal indigenous Americans and many still don't speak English, particularly the ones that have not yet integrated with the modern American society.

Always so articulate Shashi. English is a language that unifies us all in communication. English Literature certainly expresses and appreciates this a lot more through the nuances of language. How well I know that! Relating to the world through a global language is crucial to our lives. Honoring that does not deny cultural pride, which is very important too. Let’s do both. Kudos Shashi!

I disagree with Tharoor, it is the ecosystem of our languages that gives us an identity and a sense of belonging to India, becoming culturally globalized makes us deracinated and ignorant of our roots. Perhaps, Tharoor doesn't want to accept that a culturally&politically De-Centralized India is the Future, the days of Centralized top-down Political&Economic policies are coming to an end. BJP's Hindu Nationalism is the last dying gasp of Centralized Cultural Nationalism.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_subcontinent According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term subcontinent signifies a "subdivision of a continent which has a distinct geographical, political, or cultural identity" and also a "large land mass somewhat smaller than a continent".[8][9] Its use to signify the Indian subcontinent is evidenced from the early twentieth century when most of the territory was part of British Empire,[10][11][12] as it was a convenient term to refer to the region comprising both British India and the princely states under British Paramountcy.[13][14]

An Akhand Bharat is a pure concept for millennia. In order to be called a country, India needed a stable political geography spanning the entire landmass under one and only one banner (flag) and one and only one name (India). The regional rulers of India always fell short of this accomplishment. The very first wave of Indian Nationality sentiment came only during the British rule. And that was just that, a wave of sentiment which simply got stronger with time that eventually became a reality. There was no country called India before 15th August 1947. There was no nation called India before 26th January 1950. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Indian_monarchs The following list of Indian monarchs is one of several lists of incumbents. It includes those said to have ruled a portion of the Indian subcontinent, including Sri Lanka. South Asia, main centre of Indian culture The earliest Indian rulers are known from Sanskrit literature, Jain literature and a few in Buddhist literature in context of literary sources. Archaeological sources included archological remains in Indian subcontinent which give many details about earlier kingdoms, monarchs, and their interactions with each other. Early types of historic documentation include metal coins with an indication of the ruler, or at least the dynasty, at the time. These Punch-marked coins issued around 600s BCE and in abundance under the Maurya Empire in 300s BCE. There are also stone inscriptions and documentary records from foreign cultures from around this time. The main imperial or quasi-imperial rulers of North India are fairly clear from this point on, but the many local rulers, and the situation in the Deccan and South India is less clear stone inscriptions from early centuries. Main sources of South Indian history is Sangam Literature dated from 300s BCE. Time period of ancient Indian rulers rulers are speculative, or at least uncertain. The early history of many dynasties of Ancient India and are currently uncertain.
