George C. Scott balked at playing his role so over the top but Kubrick insisted he do that and by default, turned in a brilliant performance. The trip he did in the war room was a blooper but Kubrick decided to keep it in. Scott deserved an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for this role!

Even though he wanted to shoot the movie in black and white, Kubrick had the war room conference table covered in green felt like a poker table to give the subliminal metaphor of the generals and politicians gambling with the future of the planet.

there's a dramatic counterpart to this film that was released later the same year (1964) called "fail-safe" that'll knock your sox off. and the book will too. and peter sellers played 3 roles in a previous movie from 1959 called "the mouse that roared." i highly recommend both films. THEIR GREAT! thanks for the video.

Peter Sellers was supposed to also play Major Kong, the pilot of the B52, but Peter thought that 3 roles was enough so Slim Pickens was brought in by Kubrick to play that role. As brilliant as Sellers was as the President, the British exchange officer and Dr. Strangelove, I'm not sure he could have pulled off Slim's performance.

I thought it was because he broke his leg before that part was filmed, that’s why he’s in the wheelchair as Dr Strangelove, that’s what I’ve known it to be all this time.

@@Mark-t9zExactly. Sellers couldn’t climb up into the “plane,” which was built so closely to resemble a real B-52 that visiting Air Force personnel said it was a perfect copy. Thing is, the internal arrangement of a B-52 was classified information, and director Kubrick was concerned the production team got information illegally. They had simply looked at the unclassified arrangement of a B-29 and a solitary photo of a B-52 cockpit and interpolated the rest.

That was a fun watch. To me, the biggest irony of this film is that their eagerness to be militarily superior caused the destruction of EVERYTHING and yet even after they realized it, their main concern (once they hoped to save a small group in mineshafts) was to make sure they were militarily superior!! Hence the line, "We must not allow a mineshaft gap!" Oh btw since you asked, you would definitely make the cut" Thanks for the enjoyable video.

Loved the reaction! I really liked the original book Red Alert - it's well worth a read, fairly short and fast paced so it doesn't take long. The author Peter George is pretty much forgotten except for his contribution to this movie, but he was an Air Force guy who I believe had his finger close to the nuclear button, and became obsessed with how easy it would be to destroy the world by mistake. Kubrick liked the story but felt it was so dark it could only work as a comedy. I think he was right about that.

Dr. StrangeLove does not have a cyborg arm. The joke being Strangelove is a nazi who escaped to the USA, and his character is a critique, in the opinion of Kubrick, of the eugenic and fascistic nature of strategic planning at the national level of governments to survive a thermonuclear war: The generals and politicians, the Great Leaders, are safe in the bunkers, only the best of the best would be chosen to survive, and the rest of us deserve to get wiped out anyways, a "necessary sacrifice", for the good of the Nation. Strangelove’s ability to walk at the end is the final triumph of the Austrian Painter’s racial and eugenic policies. His true self revealed, his body rejuvenated according to the "Laws of Nature" the bad mustache man and his followers had believed. "my spirit will rise from the dead, and History will see I was right!". Both the USSR, its successor the Russian Federation and the USA practice eugenics to this day, as do the Chinese, all countries, in fact. That is why Kubrick stopped worrying and decided to love the bomb. He thinks the victory of fascism is inevitable. It’s in our nature, as shown by Strangelove grinning in the shadows while the Generals and Politicians prepare for the next war from their subterranean mine shafts.
@Chewable396
@Chewable396 23 күн бұрын
A lot to be said about Kubrick’s resignation and condemnation of humanity to nuclear hellfire: "I’m not happy with society, therefore the world should be annihilated. We Need To Go Back. We Need To Reset Everything." Kubrick himself becomes the Great Leader who knows best by wishing for armageddon, and Dr Strangelove keeps grinning from the shadows. Ultimately, the movie is meaningless, so why worry?

I first watched this as a teenager maybe in the late 60s and had trouble following the plotline. Now it is one of my favorite movies. The pilot, Slim Pickins, was well known for his many western movies which was his forte. Originally Peter Sellers was to play four roles, including the bomber pilot, but he thought that was too much, so he was replaced with Slim Pickins. Riding the bomb like a bucking bronco is an homage to his many westerns and his earlier life as a rodeo star.

The Strategic Air Command motto, “Peace is Our Profession.” Can be understood in that the advent of nuclear weapons stopped major wars between the nuclear powers, but conflicts devolved into “Proxie Wars” where one side did not have nuclear weapons or used smaller nations or internal anti-government forces. So no nuclear devastation, but the toll of deaths continued. During the Vietnam War, after SAC B-52s were used to bomb targets, some people quipped, “Peace Was Our Profession.” Dr Strangelove is remembered by larger portions of the general public whereas Failsafe is remembered by mostly those interested in military movies and fiction. A much smaller group. So satire is not without merit.

@@hanng1242 it's a gimmick. The fluoride in toothpaste isn't on your teeth long enough to make a difference unless you don't spit it out afterwards for about a half hour. But then you're getting fluoride in your system, which isn't good either.

After WWII, dentists in capitalist countries suggested adding fluoride to drinking water. Paranoid kooks said it was a Communist plot. The book this movie is based on is not a novel but a serious work of military theory. Good reaction.

"You're gonna have to answer to the Coca-Cola company..." Even in the face of apocalypse... capitalism 😅 I love the dark humor of Dr Strangelove. George C Scott gives a huge perfomance as Turgidson and that roll across the floor is quite the feat for a man of his age.

Peter Sellers's American English was impeccable. He gave interviews for the movie speaking American, confusing interviewers who knew he was British. You would make the cut for sure, in more ways than one. Believe it or not, men respond to intelligence and a good sense of humor in women almost as much as women respond to those qualities in men. (Just listen to a bunch of men talking about a woman who's smart and funny. Tell me it isn't sexual attraction.) You have it all.

No, it's the other way around. Ripper is psychotic, so he interprets things incorrectly. He mistook post-nut fatigue as a sign that he had lost lifeforce in the form of the...fluids he expelled. He combined this conclusion with what he learned about fluoridation and believed that the Soviets had planned to use fluoridation to cause the same reaction in all Americans, thus weakening the populace for invasion. Ripper's idea is actually an old one based on an idea of "balance of humours" from pre-modern medicine--the idea is that health is maintained by a proper balance of bodily fluids and that losing too much of any would cause illness. He believes that his fluids contain his lifeforce and he has to retain them to keep his strength, and that women are vampires trying to leech it out of men. Dr. Strangelove has a condition called split-brain syndrome, where the bridge between the 2 halves of the brain (the corpus collosum) is damaged and the 2 sections can't communicate with each other properly. So literally one hand doesn't know what the other is doing, and his control over his right arm is very limited. The fact that his right hand keeps trying to kill him and salute Hitler hints that he still harbors his Nazi sensibilities underneath his supposedly reformed persona. Despite the disclaimer at the beginning, there was an accidental basis on a real person: Jack D. Ripper was inadvertently based on Curtis LeMay, the then-leader of Strategic Air Command (SAC). Long after he retired, interviews with former officers under his command revealed that he was a total psycho who repeatedly plotted to goad the Russians into a confrontation that would prompt an American nuclear first strike, despite the guaranteed nuclear holocaust that would have happened. The guy was so determined to defeat Communism that he was willing to risk the end of the world to see it done.

Kubrick is such an interesting film maker, so much reality in this fiction. A Clockwork Orange, is also very good, but a warning, it will require some editing as it is for Adults. Barry Lyndon is epic, beautiful but a long watch. Full Metal Jacket another antiwar war film is Superb. Also a great and weird older film with Peter Sellers in it is Lolita based on a book. These are all worth watching even if you don't do a reaction to them all. And Yes, If I were stuck in a mine shaft, You would definitely meet the criteria Dr. Strangelove describes. But, I would prefer there be no world war three for that to happen. 😘

You got it - the dark, dark joke at the core of it all - Ripper started the war because he can’t get it up. I mean, he’s one of the most powerful men in the world- he commands 1400 megatons of destruction. NO WAY that someone so powerful could be impotent- it MUST be something that was done to him. It must be those Russians… 😂 Great catch - that often goes over peoples heads the first time.

This film had a plot-killing plot hole. How do they transmit the three-letter code prefix to the aircraft without anyone else detecting it. They detected the "Wing Attack Plan R" order. It wouldn't be such a problem starting in the 1990s with public-key encryption. They are overly trusting of computers, too. I don't think that it's necessary to handle a nuclear bomb with care. A precisely-timed sequence of events is necessary to set off a nuclear bomb. It's even worse with a thermonuclear (hydrogen) bomb where two U235 fission bombs have to go off simultaneously to compress the deuterium-tritium mixture between them. About your question: again, they are overly trusting of computers. Especially as nothing can be beta-tested.

Nicely done, and nice to know that Kimberly also got fooled by PeterSellers iconic 3 roles; new subber. btw, "fluoridation" was a pretty huge issue in the 2024 prez campaign, especially by JFKjr, who may wind up as HealthSec in the upcoming Trump admin. He thinks its a serious health conspiracy, along with vaccinations... I'm a Kubrick fan, and hope you will do some of his other great films! fyi, you'd definitely make "the cut" for me, but I'm afraid I'm unlikely to make YOUR cut; I'm 70 yrs old!!!

The ‘War Room’, as depicted doesn’t exist. Due to this movie, Ronald Reagan thought it did exist and had to be told the truth after he won election in 1980. That start may be telling. By the way, the fluoridation debate, which has been quiet for some years has resurfaced. Somehow removing fluoridation is a bigger debate these days than removing leaded pipes from our water supply. We’ll see where that goes. Please note that all the high-level leaders are not really sane or competent while the lower level staff (the B-52 flight crew and the grunt soldiers) are sane and competent. Part of the message of this movie is that the leaders are not worthy of their positions which means the system is corrupt and insane. More parallels could be drawn, but that exercise should be left to the viewer.
