Tom always was and always will be The Doctor. He said it himself... He wasn't playing a role, he was just being Tom: his natural charisma and love for children in the right place at the right time. To fully understand what Tom Baker did for Dr. Who: He became the "iconic" version not only in the UK, but in America as well. Not many UK shows had much of a following in America at the time. Maybe Monty Python and MAYBE Benny Hill in small pockets here and there. But Tom Baker as Dr. Who in America during the 70's was an ICON of the show's popularity in the US. So much so that most American children at the time kind of faded from the show when Tom Baker's run ended being aired in the US.

Hi, I'm sorry to sound ignorant, but I wasn't even aware up until recently that Dr Who was even AIRED or had an audience in America. I was under the impression that America had enough of its own great sci-fi shows and didn't need Dr Who, so I thought Americans didn't even care about it. I thought--then--that this was a shame, because for me, Dr Who is the greatest thing that Britain has ever produced, in terms of tv shows anyway, of course, I am speaking as a biased Dr Who fan here. Imagine my delight when I found out that Americans did like it, even love it, and there is a huge audience for it over there.

Exceptional review/production. I was utterly mesmerized by Dr. Who as a child and this review is freakishly good in how it adds another layer of confidence and dimension to all that I thought and believed in with respect to Dr. Who. Tom Baker is easily the best Dr. Who. With Jon Pertwee a close second. Jo Grant and Sarah Jane were beautifully cast/sophisticated assistants. I remember, as a young boy, being upset when Sara finally exited the Tardis to never come back.

One of my favorite things about this series outside of the informational content is the reactions to the at the time new Doctors with their first appearances by audiences from the 60s and 70s. @burrunjorman21276 жыл бұрын
Clever Dick Films: I like your videos but I wouldn't go down that route of saying everybody who complains about changes today is like someone who complains about the show back in the 70s. This "Doctor Who is about change, so all change is good, and anyone who complains is like someone who couldn't stand William Hartnell turning into Patrick Troughton in the 60s" argument is a total straw man used to silence anyone with complaints. Using that argument I could turn the Doctor into a T-Rex and justify it with "oh people laughed at Tom Baker first" Remember this exchange from Bedazzled? "Call me a nutcase, they also said that of Einstein and Newton" "They said it about a lot of nutcases too." Doctor Who is NOT all about change. Like every single other work of fiction it has a core template and premise, that you must always stick within in order for it to be DW. If not why is the TARDIS still a police box? Why do we still not know the Doctors name, why do we still have the Daleks etc? Change should be taken on a case by case basis. Also in regards to the New Series well in the last few years people HATE it because it has begun to pander to a political ideology. Third Wave feminists and SJWs or the regressive left whatever you want to call them basically slandered Steven Moffat. They called him a sexist, a racist, a homophobe etc until he did everything they wanted. Its EXACTLY like Mary Whitehouse. Fanatic wants the show to pander to the, attacks producers, BBC caves to their demands, show is compromised. Please take the time to read these two articles I wrote about how the SJWs killed Who. I know they are long, but they will give you the other side of the debate when it comes to the Capaldi era. burrunjor.com/2017/09/24/why-a-female-doctor-who-is-anti-men-bigotry-and-hate/ burrunjor.com/2016/11/21/why-third-wave-feminism-and-social-justice-warriors-have-ruined-doctor-who/

The exact same thing happens now and will always happen: 1. New Doctor is announced. 2. Fan backlash, "New Doctor is too silly!" and "You can't replace Old Doctor!" are common complaints. 3. New Doctor has first season 4. Mixed reactions. "He's not too bad actually." and "He's starting to warm up on me." 5. New Doctor becomes Current Doctor once a fantastic episode or series comes out. 6. Current Doctor slowly starts to cement himself as "The Doctor". 7. New Doctor is announced. 8. Repeat.

I thought Baker's banter as he was disarming the doomsday computer in "Robot" was iconic of his character: "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they're very sophisticated idiots. They do exactly what you tell them, at amazing speed, even if you order them to kill you. He's a bloody looney but this is what we love about him! His scene with Matt Smith's Doctor at the end of the 50th anniversary special was one of the more heart-rending, sentimental sequences I've seen in a long time but it was done the right way and done while Tom Baker was still here with us, able to do it. People call these types of sequences "corny" but the fact is that you need them because they provide EMOTIONAL support for the rest of the story, they make you GIVE A DAMN about characters. They can make a huge difference and give people a reason to prefer some older films WITH these emotional sequences over later films that are purely contrived and have no emotional resonance even if the later films have better special effects! Sorry, but story and characterizations count for something. My goodness, if you REALLY want to see a way to FUCK THINGS UP, look at the last two Star Wars movies (other than Rogue One). Are those films really the way to handle iconic characters?!? They made people end caring LESS about Star Wars, not more! Sure, there are parallels with the current Doctor Who but that's not my point. There was an acknowledgement to Baker's Doctor in the 50th anniversary special but they didn't denigrate him!

@@johnturtle6649 I'm WELL AWARE that he's alive. What I meant was he was STILL able to act, he didn't have dementia or other debilitating illness that made it impossible for him to do even a cameo. They usually wait too long and people die before they can shoot anything new with actors. They spoiled with Star Wars to do a meaningful reunion with the classic cast. They never had a scene with Han, Leia, and Luke and they gave use the nonsense of Episodes 7 and 8 with new characters most people don't give a fig about!

Kinda bizarre that you had to bring up star wars two times in a row. As far as your “critique” goes, I can see only a fear of moving forward. Which is quite a weird thing to see coming from a doctor who fan.
@AvengerII5 жыл бұрын
@@sisconhimejoshi And you don't think the writing on BOTH Doctor Who AND Star Wars ha been RETROGRADE lately? Male-bashing is JUST as destructive AND regressive as anti-feminine, misogynist writing! You do NOT advance forward by turning men into women (and vice-versa) anymore than writing women as perfect characters who haven't had to struggle! There have been plenty of well-written, STRONG female characters who were NOT invincible, who were still feminine and had vulnerability. Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley spring to mind right and they were around over 20 years before the Sequel Trilogy. If you think the current directions of Star Wars and Doctor Who are fantastic, well then that's nice FOR YOU. For over half of us, it's NOT and less people are enjoying this including a significant amount of women who are NOT third-wave feminists and want to escape the insane gender politics that have infected the West right now. They've tried to sell these new films and movies to the East (China being the BIG import market) and they're not having it, either, so either the Easterners are "not evolved" enough for you or they think it's bullshit, too.

AvengerII i'd say with star wars they should never have done a story about the skywalkers after Luke.... i mean his story ended in the return of the jedi they just shit on his name and legacy by doing what they did.... they needed a new story or at least not do more movies and stick to clone wars series or make an entirely new story set in the distant past/future like the Kotor games/books ect. they screwed up by pushing an agenda and propaganda, feminism in our faces and adding waay too much of that terrible marvel humour that doesn't work at all in Star Wars.... not to mention ignoring all the rules of the force and how it works.... a female jedi is fine but a female jedi with no training and being able to best someone whose trained as long as Kylo Ren at lightsaber/force is breaking the rules of the force and bs..... even Anakin/Luke needed training in the force to be able to use it at the level Rey was using it in TFA and they are one of if not the most powerful jedi to exist.
