Title: Traversing Traditions: From Medina to Yale
Abstract: It might appear to some that studying Islam from a faith-based seminary perspective is so totally di erent from the academic study of Islam that there is little common ground between the two. The questions asked, the methodology used, the trust given to various sources, and other epistemological issues are indeed strikingly di erent from one another.
The fact that seminary students and academics of Islam rarely intermingle or share joint conferences, despite sharing the same passions and subject matter, might reinforce this stereotype. However, this paper argues, based on the personal experiences of the author, that each of the two worlds has a lot to bene t
from the other, and that perhaps a combination of some aspects of both paradigms would produce higher levels of scholarship. As well, each of the two paradigms has its strengths and weaknesses, and it is helpful for those in one paradigm to be cognizant of the pros and cons of their own, and of the other. Finally, the paper suggests practical steps in how to build bridges between these two seemingly separate worlds.

The only, One thing I am 100% sure is MADINA Absolutely is not Yale. Two institutions which are totally created For different purposes.

This is hard to listen to because I know how wrong he is, yet I accept he is sincere in his judgement. The eastern World is more then just Medina University and Saudi Arabia and there are institutes in the eastern World which delve in the Islamic sciences and are secular. For example, Damascus University, it has a Shariah department. So many other countries I'm not familiar and will take two or three lifetimes I don't have, to get to know, I'm certain they have gone through the same organic process of having secular and Islamic institutions feeding off each other. Not all Islamic students will enter into Islamic professions. In fact most will not. They will desire a profession sub-related or not at all related to their schooling. Then you will get those, who don't reach University through a seminary, they will benefit from the fact that their secular institute is dominated by seminary level/type studies. Very much organic. As for the West. Unlike my brother speaking, I have a rather negative assessment of it. Meeting many academics brushing up on their Arabic or something related, I saw that it was a cesspool. It revolves around money, selling yourself and your bizarre ideas to elements who are only interested in undermining the east and promoting their agendas. On top of that they have a dearth of qualified people within their institutes and attracting to them. I could go on more, but.......................

@@JohnDoe-hy2ob Appealing for grants and funding, private or governmental, based on the stuff your doing isn't about money? It works fine when there is a commercial demand and an obvious material benefit from the research but when it comes to the less commercial stuff, like this, it becomes political and sinister. "the Western academy as a whorehouse", so I wouldn't describe it generally that way but in specific area? Yes!!! In fact a whorehouse seems more clean.

To illustrate my point further, with a little google research, I found an individual by the name of Khalid (Salah) al-'asli, who also published his works on Jahm bin Safwan well before Dr Qadi. He was/is seemly an academic from Iraq who wrote several articles in eastern academic papers. I don't know him from Adam and neither have I read any of his works. Neither am I bothered to read the 500 page paper Dr Qadi wrote, but it illustrates that there is a lot going on Dr Qadi isn't aware of.

@@JohnDoe-hy2ob You comment is way to laborious to read. Sorry, I can't be bothered to reply point by point. I'll just touch those some points where I've failed to express well. You seem to be thinking I'm talking about the students applying and their desire for wealth. No! the vast majority (students in noncommercial areas) will not be motivated by money, but they will be motivated by something. The cesspool doesn't immediately come from them. Rather, the department will push off topic, for controversy, obscurity, topical researches, in the hope of sexing themselves up. In doing so, they will cut corners, select unqualified students who push for such researches. Though Dr Qadi represents the exception, by being an able researcher, his experience will illustrate my point. What masters did he do? Jahm Bin Safwan! What PHD did he do? Juhayman ibn Muhammad ibn Sayf al-Otaybi. His Saudi studies was a relevant, central figure, who has had an impact on the Islamic discourse in Saudi. His Western studies was on an obscure recent event which is rather a forgotten history in the Islamic World. It wasn't chosen by him but chosen for him, whereas his masters was decided through discussion. To further illustrate my point, (I'm sure even you will not dispute this), in a country like Saudi, a Muslim country, you have populace of Arabic speaking people who will be interested in taking up these researches, whereas in the west, you will not. You might have plenty interested but they will lack the standard needed................ Arabic.

It isn't the length of the reply that makes the reading tiresome, it's the style and content.
