100 watt amps are not just about volume, but also about headroom. If you want to play with a clean tone, a 100 watt amp is the way to go. The modern 20 and 30 watt amps are great, but you can’t get a loud and clean tone with them. The old country players used Fender Twins for that reason. Dr. Z could build a 100 watt amp based on a late 50’s Fender high watt tweed twin. IMO, that is the best amp Fender ever made and I think Joe Bonamassa bought them all. 👍

Also a more "solid" tone. For some reason a quartet is just thicker than a pair.

Playing a large live club I think the minimum amp for headroom would be a 60w amp..of course speaker cab and design dependent. When you could play a club loud, I've played the various Mesa's 60w minimum and they hold up well. But with mic'ing you shouldn't need more than that depending on the genre. My Maz 18 mic'd w/pedal OD can hang in most small clubs.

Idk where you guys are playing you can't get a clean tone out of 20 watt amp today.

Thank you Doc for answering my question. Growing up with Marshall’s and Ampeg amps, there certainly is no tone or sound than that being pushed into one or two 4x12 closed back cabs - glorious! The closest I’ve ever come to that recently was my Remedy on 50 watts into a Z 1x12 with a Gold. Thank you you again for what you bring to electric guitar players.

Your videos are some of the best for information sharing, thank you so much . Absolutely loved the tube video you did a few months back . You should consider doing a live stream like Dave Friedman tone talk. I think both of you guys are super experienced, love learning . I’d watch every live stream of you -Not a builder just a daily player Cheers Baritone Cult

I build amps aswell and I've noticed the transformers are huge to the sound and tone, example I used a output transformer from a very expensive high fi amp, I could not get the bass out of it, I tried different circuits and different components, never came out how I wanted it to sound. On another one, the hot rod deluxe, I never could bond with it, so I strip it out and rebuilt the whole amp handwired and all that, but no matter what I did I couldn't get the sound I wanted, so now I fined transformer I like and build around the transformer. Im building a low gain amp right now with, I'm using 1 12ax7, 2- 12bh7 and 2 6bq5 going to use for recording.

AMA: Is there any component made for some ‘50s/‘60s amps that aren’t available anymore today and cannot be reproduced or replaced in any way?

I want that Z-80 so bad. I would buy one so hard. If you do release it, it will be my second amp for my stereo pedalboard rig with my AC30TB/6.

Output transformers are definitely the most important. As long as the power transformer is big enough it will be fine. I like chokes in most of my designs.

So do I (would like a 100watt head) 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻 - technically currently I’m using 4x 4x12’s and 200 watts (2 heads)…but I digress. 💪🏻❤️

Jim great to hear from you. Jim worked for DR.Z while he attended college . You were a great employee and I do miss you. Yes that 100 water that you help build was built for J. Mascis. It sounded huge.

@@mikezaite1335 I look back on it fondly. We had a lot of fun prototyping and making one-off amps. The Z Wreck was really fun, it's still my favorite amp!

Ken Fischer was going to build a "Metal Amp" around 1990-91 but couldn't find satisfactory output transformers. It would have peed on a VHT/Dual Rectifier, etc.
