Dr Zaliha: Search expands to manholes towards IWK sewage plant in Pantai Dalam

Rescuers are searching two additional manholes near the Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) sewage plant in Pantai Dalam for 48-year-old Vijayaletchumy.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa told reporters at the scene on Saturday (Aug 24) that the cause of the Jalan Masjid India sinkhole has not yet been determined.
Dr Zaliha said the ministry will also do a remapping of the areas in Kuala Lumpur including Jalan Masjid India to ensure safety.

Based on scientific research almost 80% of kl ares have risk for development, only 20% areas are considered safe. Malaysia is a land with lots of limestone underneath it. When development are not being properly conducted or drainage systems and other factors are not being considered carefully. It will surely help loosen the soil structure underneath. Apart from that since we have heavy rain for the past few days and flash floods, it can also happen to contribute to the natural collapse of underground lime stone cave.

I worry that she isn't dead, walked in another direction other than downstream where they're searching, and she's huddled someplace, until we get a really bad storm, that will then drown her after we wasted so many days searching for a body that isn't there because she isn't dead yet. People have been known to survive 4m falls. Maybe she wandered a bit looking for an exit, and is still really close to the initial hole, but in the direction opposite from where they're searching because they assumed that she's dead and dead bodies cannot walk upstream. Have they sent anybody into the sewers to look for her instead of simply opening manhole covers and peeking in? If we have no ROVs, maybe can ask other countries for help instead of wasting all this time?

First, it's been 2 days and 6 hours. Does your handphone battery last that long? Where would she find a charging point underground? Secondly, perhaps she's not using one of those fancy flagship phones with IP68 rating. most phones are not waterproof. Just dunk it for a second, and it's dead for good. Third, you'd need special equipment. Reception is probably rather poor, and you cannot just phone her. Her son probably already tried that.

Don't need to. There is such thing as as-built drawings. What I don't understand is, why knowing there is poison gas, than space limited, fast flowing water and they didn't use few CCTV to go down immediately at the beginning stages from main hole to main hole. Every project before authorities inspection and handing over, the main contractor is to carry out CCTV inspections. And the CCTV equipment comes with wheels, lighting, camera and go as small as 6" pipe. I'm still scratching my head!!!!

I hv taken fotos of excavator scooping up sand, noticed early part of SAR, look like object like a body, someone shd hv combed sand pile to double check if body was there b4 throwing away, if body there, then whole opn cud stop. Ask developers involved for making the sewage system. By now they should have the data of each water flow underground and etc. I pray for the best for the victim. I wish government are more strict with developers for city planning in the future by asking for future feasibility for each development, so we are more prepared of what's the outcome going to be. Yes, there are no plan-proof but a plan is better than none, and I tend to think that's what every ethical engineers believe.

@@weelenggan9079 My pet theory is they paved over a large rectangular manhole cover when the area was converted from normal vehicular roads to a pedestrian walkway several years ago. Over time, the metal bottom structure of the cover deteriorated and rusted away, that her mere weight on the cover caused it to fall in. It is probably unsafe to simply paved over manhole covers we don't want anymore. Far as I can tell, the normal way to construct these paved interlocking brick walkways is to cover the area with sand to flatten it, then apply a thin later of concrete to stabilize the sand, and then some more sand, and then the bricks on top. Sometimes, they apply mortar instead of sand as the final layer below the bricks. Anyway, the concrete layer is very thin, and isn't intended to support weight over a void underneath. It is supposed to rest on a solid surface.

Isnt there a better way to find something under the sink hole? Any technology to scan underground from up or send a camera or something to check. She was wearing a saree and a bag. Maybe got chance to get stuck somewhere. It is also dangerous and time consuming for bomba to go inside and check. I hope they will seek help soon before wasting time

Manhole tak ada kaitan dgn kejadian jerlus tu lah. Manhole itu hanya lubang untuk masuk dan periksa atau perbaiki sesatu di bawah/dalam sana.

@@metzmatu8409 she did fall through a manhole into the sewer tunnel. Look at the initially CCTV video. The hole was a perfect rectangle with very straight lines and 90 degree angles. No sinkhole is that shape. It is a collapsed manhole cover.

And manhole covers lasts about 30 to 50 years. However, if we paved it over, then there will be no further maintenance, and we're just asking for trouble. Especially as the bottom is over a sewer line which would be very damp, causing the metal to rust over time.

@@danielch6662 What you see in the cctv footage is not sinkhole, that is the surface concrete walk pavement on the ground surface which collapse and swallow the victim down. A hole/crack on the underground pipe/channel which is 10 metres dip down under that she fall thru farther into the 3 diameter pipe/channel, not captured on cctv. The manhole for the 10 meters underground channel is 100 meters down from the site she fall.
