It's awesome when the cheap, simple hack works as well as any expensive product.

Gonna give it a mountain test this Monday but the mount is rock solid so I expect it to work perfect

Brilliant - I am looking at doing exactly the same. Didn't think about adding the spacers. Did you find you had to brace the mount by adding brackets underneath to something solid? My concern is the plastic isn't strong enough to hold the weight of the GPS. Also, I'm going to use the spare power on plug in the headlight wire cluster so I don't run the battery down if I forget to switch it off.

Where I got the idea was I realized the plastic was strong enough to hold my windshield and the wind buffering at 80mph surely it was strong enough to hold a small light gps like the garmin 396. Turns out I was right , so no you don't need any support brackets etc the only thing I added to the spacers was 2 small rubber cushions that helped with vibration and also did exactly what you said and ran external power to the light cluster. Here is a quick update video of it and also recent videos of me going through some tight off road sections and you can see how sturdy and secure it stays at all times kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHi4iHRqmNZ8eMk kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKTEkmV3fb2rjKs Tomorrow I'm uploading a video of me going through multiple Water crossings and you can see how well the set up remains in those conditions too

How long did your Zumo run on it’s internal battery? Garmin says the battery life is around 4 hours. If that’s accurate, I won’t need to power the Zumo from an external source (like my bike’s battery).

Jay that's about right it was about 4 hours but I suggest wiring it to an external source of your bikes battery cause once you become reliant on your gps and you may extend your ride here and there, now that 4 hour window gives you anxiety & takes away from your enjoyment of your ride cause it's one more thing your monitoring. Also if it's a bright sunny day and you need to run a brighter setting on your screen that will drain the gps battery faster too.
